hio Writers’ Guild
Our Mission
The Ohio Writers' Guild is a supportive community of and for Ohio authors. Our mission is to encourage excellent work through peer review, educational programs, and promotional events. As the premier organization for Ohio writers since 1988, the guild participates in many communities and state events sponsors monthly gatherings and provides an encouraging community for Ohio's family of authors.
Become a Member
The Ohio Writers’ Guild is open to all Ohioans with an active interest in writing, published and unpublished. The guild is a community that values personal peer relationships. To become a member, attend one of our sessions in person. There are no membership fees. While we would value your frequent attendance at our meetings, we do understand attendance may be difficult for some, therefore we only require a minimum attendance of one gathering a year.
Our meetings are very informal if you need to leave early, we do understand that for many writers, writing is not your only job. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your work.
Monthly Gatherings
Sessions take place the Second Tuesday of each month from October through July, from 6:30 to 8:00.

Late-night TV hosts join on podcast to help striking writers
LOS ANGELES, Aug 29 (Reuters) - An all-star lineup of late-night television hosts are uniting to chat about Hollywood's ongoing labor disputes on a new podcast, a group effort to raise funds for their striking staff writers.
Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver will take part in the podcast that debuts on Wednesday called "Strike Force Five," according to a statement from streaming service Spotify . All five will appear on each episode and they will take turns as host.
The roughly 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in early May after failing to reach a new labor agreement with the major Hollywood studios that produce films and TV shows. The SAG-AFTRA actors union, Hollywood's largest union with 160,000 members, walked off the job in July.

Without teams of writers to pen topical jokes, the late-night shows have been airing re-runs for nearly four months.
The five hosts have been meeting weekly over Zoom "to discuss the complexities behind the ongoing Hollywood strikes," Spotify said, and the new podcast will allow fans to "listen in on these once-private chats."
Spotify said "Strike Force Five" will be available on most major podcast platforms and run for at least 12 episodes. Kimmel - in a post on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter - said the podcast would continue "for the remainder of the strike."
All proceeds will go to the writers of the late-night shows, Spotify said.

Late-Night Hosts Team Up for a New Podcast as Strikes Drag On
By Natalie Jarvey

It’s been 120 days since Hollywood writers went on strike —and just as long since Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver last hosted new episodes of their late-night TV shows. Though they’ve been unemployed, the late-night hosts—who themselves are all members of the Writers Guild of America—have found ways to stay busy. Late Night ’s Meyers moderated a conversation with the Hold Steady in May; Late Show ’s Colbert took a break from serving ice cream on the picket lines to chat with Jim Gaffigan at New Jersey’s North to Shore Festival; and Tonight Show ’s Fallon performed at Yankee Stadium during the Jonas Brothers’ concert. All five hosts have also apparently been meeting weekly via Zoom, and they’re ready to share the contents of those calls with the world as a podcast.
Their new limited-series podcast, Strike Force Five, will debut Wednesday from Spotify. It’s expected to run for at least 12 episodes, and all the hosts will participate in every installment, taking turns as the conversation leader for each. The podcast will feature what’s being billed as “hilarious and compelling conversations.” Mint Mobile and Aviation American Gin owner Diageo are signed on as copresenting sponsors of Strike Force Five (both companies have a connection to Ryan Reynolds, though he’s not directly involved in the podcast). All proceeds are being promised to out-of-work late-night TV staffers.
The late-night shows—which are typically written hours before they are taped—were among the first casualties when writers put down their pens on May 2. The Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show, Late Night, and Last Week Tonight all immediately went on hiatus, as did Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show, with the latter still lacking a permanent host following the departure of Trevor Noah in December. At the time, Fallon and Meyers reportedly dipped into their own pockets to support their unemployed crews for an extra week beyond the two-week pay that NBC offered.
It was during those early days of the strike that the late-night hosts began regularly meeting on Zoom to discuss the issues at hand. The camaraderie among the group apparently extends back to at least the pandemic era, when all the late-night shows had to deal with unprecedented production challenges.
During the last writers strike in 2007–2008, late-night shows went off the air for around eight weeks, but eventually resumed taping new episodes without their writers. “The strike basically wiped out all my savings,” Kimmel, who was among the hosts who paid staff out of pocket during the 100-day work stoppage, later told The Hollywood Reporter . “I also felt if we stayed off the air, it was going to do permanent damage to our shows.” This time, however, Hollywood is grappling with work stoppages for both writers and actors, who began their own strike on July 14. It’s hard to imagine that the late-night programs, which are typically key stops for actors promoting new movies or shows, would be able to resume while writers and actors are on the picket lines. Strike Force Five, then, seems like the answer for anyone who’s been missing the regular presence of a Jimmy in their life.

Business | when it comes to the hollywood strikes, it’s not just the entertainment industry that’s being hurt.

By KRYSTA FAURIA
LOS ANGELES — The company had struggled for years, tossed around by pandemic-induced production shutdowns that began in March 2020. Last year, though, business for Valentino’s Costume Group had finally picked back up.
Hoping to capitalize on that good fortune, the shop moved in January to a North Hollywood space twice the size of its old building.
Then Hollywood’s screenwriters and actors went on strike . Now, says co-owner Shon LeBlanc, Valentino’s can no longer afford to pay its rent.
“My chest is tightening because the money is so tight,” says LeBlanc, bemoaning the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ apparent lack of urgency to try to reach an agreement with the unions. “When is the mayor going to step in and say, ‘I’m ordering you guys to figure something out because you’re about to collapse the economy in Los Angeles?’”
It has been well over 100 days since members of the Writers Guild of America stopped working, and more than a month since the actors union joined them. LeBlanc’s is just one story of many detailing the financial ripple effects.
Few corners of the entertainment industry have been left unscathed.
From studio rentals and set construction to dry cleaning for costumes and transportation to sets, it’s hard to find a corner of the Los Angeles economy that has entirely escaped the reverberations.
“A movie set in one day can generate tens of thousands of dollars,” says Kevin Klowden, chief strategist with the Milken Institute, a think tank that researches social and economic issues. “Depending on the level of activity, it can be hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
The last writers strike, more than 15 years ago, took three months to resolve and is conservatively estimated to have cost $2.1 billion in lost output. This time around, the number will be harder to measure given how much production costs, locations and timelines have changed in recent years thanks to technological improvements and increased globalization.
“We tend to think of productions as sort of a self-contained thing,” Klowden says, while in reality, a production often spans companies and even countries. Projects are often “shipped off” to New Zealand for the addition of visual effects, he cites as an example. “The larger a production is, the more likely you are to see a whole bunch of different tax credit mentions at the end.”
Both guilds are seeking to address issues brought about by the dominance of streaming services, which have changed all aspects of production, from how projects are written to when they’re released.
For the writers, the guild has said the use of small staffs, known as “mini rooms” (a riff on the notion of the “writers’ room”), for shorter time periods has made a living income hard to achieve. Actors’ concerns include protections on the use of artificial intelligence.
Although talks between the WGA and the AMPTP have resumed, there are no plans between the actors and studios to return to the bargaining table.
“I’m not really understanding what the silent treatment is,” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher told The Associated Press last week. “It could be a tactical strategy to see if we they can wait us out until we lose our resolve and then they can make a better deal for themselves.”
In an earnings call at the beginning of August, Hudson Pacific executives tried to assuage concerns about the financial impact that the strikes are having on their businesses, while still conceding the reality behind those fears. The company owns both Quixote and Sunset Studios, two major equipment and studio rental companies in the entertainment industry.
“We’re all hugely aware of the shrapnel around the industry in general and all of the residual businesses that are getting affected. It will start to feel fairly painful,” warned its chair and CEO Victor Coleman in response to questions of how long the strikes may last. “It will be damaging. And I think everybody is very cognizant of that.”
The fallout reaches beyond entertainment, into all corners of LA
The uncertain duration of the strikes looms large over every business feeling the financial effects, with fallout spreading well beyond the entertainment industry. Restaurants, coffee shops, even nail salons that neighbor major studios — they’re all desperate for a quick resolution.
Patys Restaurant, a Toluca Lake staple that boasts regulars including Steve Carell and Adam Sandler, has seen a major slump in business from diners and catering orders, according to owner George Metsos. He cites lost businesses from obvious patrons — actors, writers, crew members — but also speaks of other regulars who aren’t coming in: electricians, set carpenters and the drivers who stop in for breakfast on their way to work at the nearby valley studios.
Emmanuel Pelargos, who owns Astro Burger across the street from Paramount Studios in Hollywood, says the regular presence of writers and actors on the picket lines has not offset the decline in business from halted productions.
“They come in sometimes,” he says of the picketers, “but it’s mostly to use the bathroom.”
Corrie Sommers, vice president of the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce, says the timing of the strikes — on the heels of financial recovery from the pandemic — hits small businesses particularly hard.
“The strike … has just set everybody backwards again. Only this time, there’s not the aid that is needed,” Sommers says. “No one’s saying, ‘Here’s some free money to bail you out. Here’s some money to float you through.’ That’s not there anymore. And it’s affecting everybody.”
Sommers, also a real estate agent in the area, cites multiple clients who were interested in buying homes but changed their minds.
“I’ve personally had about five buyers in the last three months say, ‘I’m going to have to wait until next year because I don’t know what’s happening,’” she says.
While many on strike acknowledge the financial burdens on both peers in the industry and their neighbors outside of it, the writers are standing by their decision with renewed vigor on the picket lines after the much larger actors guild joined them.
Luvh Rakhe, a member of the WGA negotiating committee who has written for hit shows like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “New Girl,” is acutely aware of the financial costs. But he believes people across industries and professions know it is necessary.
“I don’t think anyone is, like, blase and happy about the momentary disruption to their lives,” Rakhe says, “but they understand why it happened and what it is hoping to achieve.”
Despite the burdens being placed on people in peripheral lines of work, many of them say there is a general sense of solidarity. LeBlanc, the Valentino’s co-owner, continues to underscore his support, even amid the uncertain future of his 25-year-old business. (To answer his question, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass hasn’t indicated she will intervene, but did say in a statement in early August that she is “ready to personally engage with all the stakeholders in any way possible to help get this done.”)
To keep the shop afloat, Valentino’s has started a GoFundMe to pay the rent for now. LeBlanc is hopeful that if they can raise enough money for the next month or so, Halloween and school productions starting back up will get them through the rest of the year.
“We do have things coming up,” he has assured the landlord. “We just need to get some money in here to get us over the hump.”

- Code Llama is an AI model built on top of Llama 2 , fine-tuned for generating and discussing code.
- It’s free for research and commercial use.
Today, we’re releasing Code Llama, a large language model (LLM) that can use text prompts to generate and discuss code. Code Llama is state-of-the-art for publicly available LLMs on coding tasks. It has the potential to make workflows faster and more efficient for developers and lower the barrier to entry for people who are learning to code. Code Llama has the potential to be used as a productivity and educational tool to help programmers write more robust, well-documented software.
We believe an open approach to AI is best for developing new AI tools that are innovative, safe and responsible, so we’re releasing Code Llama for both research and commercial use under the same community license as Llama 2 .
Code Llama is a code-specialized version of Llama 2 that was created by further training Llama 2 on its code-specific datasets, sampling more data from that same dataset for longer. Essentially, Code Llama features enhanced coding capabilities. It can generate code and natural language about code, from both code and natural language prompts (e.g., “Write me a function that outputs the fibonacci sequence”). It can also be used for code completion and debugging. It supports many of the most popular programming languages used today, including Python, C++, Java, PHP, Typescript (Javascript), C#, Bash and more.
We are releasing three sizes of Code Llama with 7B, 13B and 34B parameters respectively. Each of these models is trained with 500B tokens of code and code-related data. The 7B and 13B base and instruct models have also been trained with fill-in-the-middle (FIM) capability, allowing them to insert code into existing code, meaning they can support tasks like code completion right out of the box.
The three models address different serving and latency requirements. The 7B model, for example, can be served on a single GPU. The 34B model returns the best results and allows for better coding assistance, but the smaller 7B and 13B models are faster and more suitable for tasks that require low latency, like real-time code completion.
We also further fine-tuned two additional variations of Code Llama: Code Llama – Python and Code Llama – Instruct.
Code Llama – Python is a language specialized variation of Code Llama, further fine-tuned on 100B tokens of Python code. Because Python is the most benchmarked language for code generation, and because Python and PyTorch play an important role in the AI community – we believe a specialized model provides additional utility.
Code Llama – Instruct is an instruction fine-tuned and aligned variation of Code Llama. Instruction tuning continues the training process, but with a different objective. The model is fed a natural language instruction input and the expected output. This makes it better at understanding what people expect out of their prompts. We recommend using Code Llama – Instruct variants whenever using Code Llama for code generation since Code Llama – Instruct has been fine-tuned to generate helpful and safe answers in natural language.
Programmers are already using LLMs to assist in a variety of tasks. The goal is to make developer workflows more efficient so that they can focus on the most human-centric aspects of their job, rather than repetitive tasks. We believe that AI models, and LLMs for coding in particular, benefit most from an open approach, both in terms of innovation and safety. Publicly available, code-specific models can facilitate the development of new technologies that improve peoples’ lives. By releasing code models like Code Llama, the entire community can evaluate their capabilities, identify issues and fix vulnerabilities.
Code Llama is designed to support software engineers in all sectors — including research, industry, open source projects, NGOs and businesses. But there are still many more use cases to support. We hope Code Llama will inspire others to leverage Llama 2 to create new innovative tools for research and commercial products.

Ohio reproductive rights group sues state Ballot Board over abortion ballot language

Sept. 22 is date to watch in Ohio abortion access
The Republican-controlled Ohio Ballot Board's attempt to insert the term "unborn child" into a ballot referendum intended to protect access to abortion in the state is being challenged before the state Supreme Court in a lawsuit filed on Monday.
The lawsuit was filed by Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights and five petitioners who had submitted the original ballot language, calling the board's summary a "naked attempt to mislead."
The 137-page lawsuit argued the Ballot Board's approved language is "irreparably flawed" and asked the court to direct the board to "reconvene and adopt ballot language that properly and lawfully describes the Amendment."
"The ultimate question before the Court is accordingly quite simple: whether the people of Ohio can be trusted, on November 7, to read, interpret, and weigh the Amendment’s text (or an accurate summation of it) for themselves, or whether they will instead be subjected to a naked attempt to mislead perpetrated by their own elected officials," the lawsuit said.
At issue is the language the Ballot Board prepared to appear on the ballot.
The changed text adds four uses of the words "unborn child," a term used by anti-abortion activists that never appeared in the referendum wording in the petitions that were signed to get measure on the ballot.
"That fraught term is in stark contrast to the neutral, accurate, and scientifically accepted terminology that the Amendment itself uses and defines," the lawsuit says. "The ballot language thus unnecessarily introduces an ethical judgment — at what stage of development a zygote, embryo, or fetus becomes a 'child' — which is beyond the scope of the measure and about which Ohioans profoundly disagree."
A representative from the office of Ohio’s secretary of state, which oversees the Ballot Board, said the office does not comment on pending litigation. Ohio’s Republican secretary of state, Frank LaRose, has been vocal in his opposition to the proposed amendment.
The five-person Ballot Board is chaired by LaRose, who is also running for the Senate seat held by Democrat Sherrod Brown, and it includes an additional Republican, two Democrats and a fifth member who was appointed by Republican legislators.
The original proposed amendment says that "abortion may be prohibited after fetal viability," though it cannot be prohibited if it is necessary to protect the patient's life or health. LaRose incorrectly asserted on social media the same day the language was changed that the proposed referendum would allow "abortion on demand up to the moment of birth.”
Matt Keyes, a spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, said: "Ohio Democrats are used to these kinds of dirty tricks designed to silence Ohioans. We’re going to communities across the state to connect with voters and lay out the stakes of the November election."
Democratic state Rep. Elliot Forhan, who is also on the Ballot Board, slammed LaRose and "extremists" for the approved language. The lawsuit individually names the five members of the Ballot Board, including Forhan.
"Extremists led by Frank LaRose ignored medical experts and legal experts by approving ballot language that is blatantly misleading and purposefully inaccurate solely for their own personal and political gain," he said in a statement .
Ohioans resoundingly rejected a proposal Aug. 8 that would have raised the threshold of votes needed to pass constitutional amendments, which would have made it more difficult for November's abortion rights amendment to pass.
In 2019, Ohio imposed a law banning abortions at about six weeks into a pregnancy — which is about two weeks after conception.
