Unsend and edit messages on iPhone

Note: To unsend or edit text messages, you must be using iMessage with iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, or macOS Ventura. If your recipients have devices with earlier versions of iOS, they receive follow-up messages with the preface “Edited to” and your new message in quotation marks. SMS messages can’t be unsent or edited.
Unsend a message
You can undo a recently sent message for up to two minutes after sending it.
Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send.
A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts: yours and your recipient’s.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, or macOS Ventura, unsending removes the message from their device.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 15.6 or earlier, iPadOS 15.6 or earlier, macOS 12 or earlier, or is using SMS, the original message remains in the conversation. When you unsend a message, you’re notified that the recipient may still see the original message in the message transcript.
Edit a sent message
You can edit a recently sent message up to five times within 15 minutes of sending it.
In Messages, select a conversation with the message you want to edit.
Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Edit.

Note: The message is marked as Edited in the conversation transcript.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, or macOS Ventura, the message bubble is updated to reflect your edits on their device, and both of you can tap Edited to see previous versions of your message.
If the person you’re messaging is using a device with iOS 15.6 or earlier, iPadOS 15.6 or earlier, macOS 12 or earlier, or is using SMS, they receive a new message with your updated text.
CONSCIOUS WRITING FOR CREATIVE LIVING
5 Reasons to Write a Letter You Don’t Send
Free writing in a journal has played a significant role on and off for most of my life so I know just how beneficial it is for processing thoughts and feelings, clearing internal space, and more.
My personal experience led me to include Conscious Journaling in my professional work as one of the foundational practices of Conscious Writing.
Yet it wasn’t until relatively recently that I discovered a magnificent array of journal techniques to suit all types of people in all sorts of situations.
Journal Therapy
Kathleen (Kay) Adams is a psychotherapist who specializes in “helping people use personal writing – journals, diaries, poetry, memoirs, and stories – as a pathway to deeper self-understanding.”(*)
She calls this “journal therapy” which she defines as “the purposeful and intentional use of life-based writing to further [desired] outcomes.”(*) It’s an approach she’s been using professionally since 1985.
Her work was originally informed by Dr. James Pennebaker who conducted and published research on the relationship between emotional release writing and improved physiological and psychological functioning.
The Journal Ladder
In 1998, Adams combined a continuum of journal therapy techniques that she’d been using successfully with her patients into one model she called the Journal Ladder.
It presents 14 different journal writing options that range from highly structured to completely open in order to help people organize, pace and contain their writing.
The reality is that free writing doesn’t suit all situations, so the Journal Ladder enables everyone to enjoy the proven therapeutic benefits of journal writing and the boost it gives to creativity (read my previous post on that here ).
Unsent Letters
I love the way that writing serves such a broad spectrum of purposes and feel inspired to share some of these tools with you.
I’m drawn to start with one of the most popular called Unsent Letters; this involves writing a letter to a specific person (in your journal) with no intention of actually sending it.
The process enables you to express your thoughts and feelings without holding yourself back and in a way that may not have been possible with the person concerned.
Here are 5 reasons you might want to write a letter you don’t send. You may:
- Have a request to make that you can’t say out loud.
- Need your voice to be heard without being judged.
- Require some additional help to feel properly supported.
- Struggle with pent-up anger, hurt or feel misunderstood.
- Yearn to express what’s truly going on for you right now.
Unsent letters are powerful because they’re for your eyes only so you’re genuinely able to express all that lies unexpressed in your heart without needing to explain all of the details.
As a result, they tend to inspire helpful insights into patterns and relationships, and trigger an immediate and extremely welcome sense of relief.
In the space that follows, a fresh perspective can be gained and a deep level of healing can occur.
Wherever you are in your life right now, I invite you to schedule some time alone with your journal in the next few days.
Reflect on what you need to release before it negatively affects your quality of life and causes damage to your overall health and well-being.
Then dive in and write your unsent letter to experience the transformative power of this creative practice for conscious living.
What are your thoughts and feelings about writing a letter you don’t send? Please share your comments and experience below. Thank you!
* For more information about Kathleen (Kay) Adams pioneering work, visit the Center for Journal Therapy .
It’s a great technique that I have used many times and really works as long as you do not read back what you have written otherwise you reabsorb the emotional energy you have spent hours writing to release.
Thanks for sharing your experience Jeanine. I’ve written about this as a journal writing technique as I wanted to share Kathleen Adams’ Journal Ladder for anyone who isn’t aware of it.
However this same technique can also be written on loose leaf paper rather than in your journal. Then with a strong and clear intention to release the emotional energy once and for all, the paper can be responsibly burned or buried with a respectful request that the earth compost it to restore the energy to its natural state of neutrality.
- Pingback: Fill Your Paper with the Breathings of Your Heart | Julia McCutchen
This might sound metal but I like to burn it after I write it. It is a way to truly release those crappy emotions towards someone. It’s a very visual and cathartic way of letting go
Not at all Brooklyn, I understand. Responsibly burning what you’ve written is indeed a powerful way to release emotions that are not serving you. Thanks for sharing your experience.
This, along with Journaling nightly was at least something I did appreciate from my ex therapist. I love to write anyway. But these letters are unedited, qnot thought over, just get in that car n drive. Know matter what spews out. It’s purging honesty. Sometimes things Evan you didn’t realize. I highly recommend it. And if your therapist doesn’t require it of you. Bring it up..or do it yourself. This is not meant to be funny but I wrote 3.5 pages to a horse.
Thank you for sharing your experience Conni, and good for you following your impulse to write to a horse, they are magnificent creatures!

Save or delete drafts of unsent messages
By default, Outlook attempts to save an email message you're composing every three minutes. That way, if you have to step away or your computer restarts, you don't lose your work. If you attempt to close an unsent message without sending it, Outlook will ask you if you want to save the message as a draft.
Save a draft of a message that you want to finish later
You can force a draft to save at any time by clicking the Save button in the top left menu bar of the email message or click File > Save .
Open a draft message you never sent
In the folder pane, click the Drafts folder, then double-click the message. If you want to delete a draft, right-click a message in the draft folder and select Delete .
Turn automatic saving of draft messages on or off or change how often drafts are saved
Select File > Options ..
In the left pane, click Mail .
Under Save messages , select or clear the Automatically save items that have not been sent after this many minutes check box. You can also use this option to change how often draft messages are saved. Enter any value between 1 and 99.
Better together: Manage drafts from Outlook for iOS and Outlook for Android
To manually save a draft of a message, do one of the following:
Click Save on the Quick Access Toolbar .
Open a message you previously created and saved, but never sent
In Mail , in the Navigation Pane, click Drafts , and then double-click the message.
Tip: To delete any draft, click the message and then press Delete.
Turn off automatic saving of unsent messages
On the Tools menu, click Options .
On the Preferences tab, under E-mail , click E-mail Options .
Clear the Automatically save unsent messages check box.
Change automatic message saving interval
Under Message handling , click Advanced E-mail Options .
Under Save messages , next to AutoSave items every , in the minutes box enter a number between 1 and 99.

How to See Unsent Messages
Now you might think or ask that perhaps there is a way for a person to read unsent messages? Can others see the hasty texts you decided not to send at the last minute and thought deleted but probably not completely?
What is the unsent project?

There have been misunderstandings, or non-clarity in popular social networks like Tik Tok about a said “unsent messages’ ‘ project. One should not go there to see unsent messages. Can others see them? My answer to those questions would be a “NO.”
The unsent project doesn’t make your unsent messages visible or acquirable. But rather, the unsent project is about a website that makes it possible for everyone around the world to write unsent love messages anonymously and post on that website.
The website is accessible for everyone, but it would be secretive, and no one would know for whom thus messages were for. No one can know which of the unsent messages were addressed to them or if any ‘admirers’ have ever dropped any unsent messages for you on the website.
Are unsent message websites real?

You might have a few things to say to your crush or lover or someone that broke your heart?
The unsent project messenger is the perfect place to write without it ever reaching the person to which the message was being addressed. So go on there and check the website out! Leave a message or two if you like.
However, an unsent messages website is not a world where privacy is being violated, or identities are being revealed in any form or manner. The products and services make it a safe and secured platform that archives message compilations that people write on the website.
It’s a world of freedom where you send a message to whosoever you decide to include that person’s name if you like but also not quite sending it to them as they would not be informed or might never even come across it. It is not necessary for the person you referred to the message to come across it if it were anonymous mostly. Privacies and identities are addressed in the unsent project messages website.
Is it possible to see unsent messages?

It depends on what you mean by that. Now, if you are asking if someone can see the unsent messages, you wrote for them but never sent, for reasons, then no! They can’t see it. But if you post it on the website of the Unsent message, then it is visible to everybody in the world to access anytime.
Do not forget that you would be writing the unsent messages as an anonymous person, and thus no one would ever know who wrote the messages, and if you would like, you wouldn’t disclose to whom you are writing that either.
The website is all about keeping anonymous. It’s like an open secret when you think about it and is very intriguing and almost feels like an inside joke to you when you write your feelings to a certain person anywhere and at any time, no matter how soft or cold you may sound in that message but no one reading it would know who you were referring to.
Unsent messages website is a world provided for people who want to be heard but never spoken for personal or social reasons or interest to drop a message with no trace.
Moreover, you could type your name on the website, though, and if the person that left the message decided to write the addressed person’s name, then perhaps the person could see it.
But you still wouldn’t know who the message was from, except, of course, if the person wants to be known, their name will perhaps also be in the message. Or if you intentionally want the person to find the unsent message or not. But if you do not want the person to find out, you need to use the website rather than say it directly to their messenger or something. It’s a choice.
How do I see unsent messages on messenger?

A messenger is an app that allows a person to send another person text messages. It is used to communicate with smith friends and has no connection to the unsent message website.
To answer the question as to whether unsent messages can be seen in messenger, the answer would be a “no.” It is impossible to remove a message before sending it and seeing it.
No one can see a text message when you permanently remove it before sending it. You just have to tap and hold to delete the unsent message, and it is gone forever. Reading unsent messages would be against a few privacy rules and hence would be against the law.

In a nutshell, the Unsent Project is about a website that makes it possible for everyone worldwide to write unsent love messages anonymously and post them on the website.
It might be a love confession. The website is accessible for everyone, but it would be secretive, and the writer and the person addressed to would not necessarily be known. The Unsent Project is in no way in comparison to the messenger app, and thus unsent messages in messenger can neither be accessed by the one to have been sent to nor the writer of the text that was never delivered.

TikTokers are rushing to read the text messages they never received
Wed, October 20, 2021 at 9:58:05 AM EDT
TikTokers think they’ve found an archive of “unsent” text messages but there’s a little more to it than that.
It all started when someone posted a video claiming they searched their name on The Unsent Project . Now people are looking themselves up on the website and getting some pretty mixed results. Here’s what you need to know about these so-called unsent texts.
What is the Unsent Project?
The Unsent Project says it’s a “collection of unsent text messages to first loves.” It’s not actually an archive of messages that people sent, then canceled right after. That would probably violate some privacy laws.
The project is actually a lot more like Post Secret , where people anonymously send in confessions. In the Unsent Project, people anonymously submit messages they wish they could have sent their exes. Some are loving and others are scathing. Each message is addressed to the person’s first name only. Thus, you can search your name and see if anyone out there is thinking of you (or a person with the same name at least). Many people with uncommon names have complained there are no entries for them.
To find out if any messages are under your name visit The Unsent Project and type your name in the search bar.

Opinion How the U.S. sees Ukraine’s push: No stalemate, but no breakthrough

As Biden administration officials assess Ukraine’s slow progress in this summer’s counteroffensive, they have been candidly discussing with Kyiv what they see as “lessons learned.” The bottom line for the administration is that this war will probably grind into next year — and that the United States and its allies must remain steadfast in helping Ukraine keep pushing forward.

I heard this same sentiment across all levels of the U.S. government in recent days. The summer has been frustrating and, in some ways, disappointing for Ukraine and its Western backers. But rather than look for a quick diplomatic exit ramp, most senior U.S. officials appear more convinced than ever of the need to stand fast with Kyiv. The United States, in their view, cannot be seen to abandon its ally.
“We do not assess that the conflict is a stalemate,” national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Wednesday, during a week when the media reported unnamed senior officials voicing pessimism about Ukraine’s progress. Perhaps hoping to bolster spirits in Kyiv, Sullivan countered: “We are seeing [Ukraine] continue to take territory on a methodical, systematic basis.”
This commitment to continued support doesn’t mean that U.S. officials don’t have criticisms of how Ukrainian commanders have conducted the counteroffensive . They have been offering detailed guidance to their counterparts, often prefaced with a recognition that no currently serving U.S. officer has fought the kind of relentless, brutal, World War I-style of combat that Ukraine has faced.

The starting point in this assessment is that Ukrainian forces aren’t likely to reach the Sea of Azov and cut off Russia’s land route to Crimea before winter sets in, as they had hoped. U.S. officials still think the Ukrainians can significantly breach Russian positions this year, as they pass beyond Russia’s hardened first and second lines of defense. U.S. officials believe Kyiv’s mobile units could then move quickly east and west, confounding Russian defenders.
But Ukraine probably won’t deal any decisive blow before year’s end. That means a continuation of this grueling war into 2024 and beyond, and a continuation of the heavy casualties and emotional trauma for both sides. U.S. officials believe strategic patience remains the best weapon against Russian President Vladimir Putin, who still thinks he can outlast Ukraine and the West.
Pentagon officials have urged their Ukrainian counterparts to prioritize better and concentrate their forces on potential breakout points along the 600-mile front. Ukraine initially placed equal emphasis on three axes, rather than concentrating on the main thrust south through Zaporizhzhia toward the Sea of Azov. Ukraine is said to have responded, finally, by moving some units toward the south from Bakhmut and other areas in the East where, despite U.S. arguments, they had remained entrenched.
American commanders have long believed that the Ukrainians waste artillery fire in crushing barrages that emulate Soviet tactics. By one U.S. estimate, the Ukrainians have fired about 2 million rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition since the war began, nearly exhausting Western stockpiles. U.S. officials urge Ukraine instead to weight its artillery fires toward the most important targets and use them to advance quickly toward their objectives.
Pentagon officials have also urged Ukraine to rely less on drones for battlefield awareness and more on ground reconnaissance forces, which can assess Russian positions better. And they have pressed Kyiv to give junior officers more latitude to exploit opportunities along the sprawling front. On all these points, U.S. officials believe the Ukrainians are responding positively. But the discussion has been prickly in recent weeks.
As Biden administration officials assess the likelihood that the war will continue into next year and perhaps beyond, they’re considering several important new augmentations of Western support. There’s growing backing in Washington for providing rocket-launched cluster munitions, for example, which could strike deeper than the artillery-fired versions the United States began supplying last month.
The United States is also working hard to plan a Ukrainian “force of the future” that could deter continued Russian aggression. The F-16s that will begin arriving in a few months will be part of that, but U.S. officials are working with allies on many other weapons systems and training.
Ukraine and its supporters continue to plead for long-range missiles, known as ATACMS, that could hit deep behind Russian lines. But the Pentagon continues to resist, largely because officials fear the United States doesn’t have enough ATACMS to supply Ukraine without undercutting its own readiness for any future conflict with China.
With Ukrainian forces stymied on the ground, U.S. officials believe that President Volodymyr Zelensky will take the fight increasingly to Russian territory and occupied Crimea. Friday’s reported Ukrainian attacks — with 42 drones launched at Crimea and a missile aimed at Moscow, according to Russian reports — is a foretaste of what’s ahead. The Biden administration’s position is that it doesn’t encourage or enable Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, but officials do expect more.
Perhaps the best example in military history of a long bloody fight against a stronger power that ended in eventual victory was the American Revolution. Along the way, there were many periods of demoralization, backbiting, complaints about insufficient foreign support and, occasionally, despair. But the rebels stayed in the field, and the British eventually withdrew.
Ukraine has entered a season of discontent, with recriminations on all sides, because of the sluggish counteroffensive. But this war is far from over.
