6 tips to ace your next UX design presentation

Ace your next UX design presentation - get buy-in

Make your next UX design presentation a winner with these 6 useful tricks and watch out for these common pitfalls

Presentations aren’t easy. Failing to memorize all the information, getting your slides mixed up and stumbling over your words are just a few ways we trip up if we’re not prepared. It happens to all of us!

It might look like you’re just chatting, but there’s a lot of thought and work behind a good speech and accompanying images. Think of Steve Jobs. The man managed to not only unveil a product that changed the entire tech sector, but he also transformed his presentations into an art form. They were inspiring, captivating and entertaining.

When you have a great web or app design idea, it’s a little like that too. You know how the website should be. You know what it needs to do, how to get it done and what you need to get there. But the client, or the boss, or other stakeholder, just doesn’t seem to get it.

Could it be that you’re not explaining it right? What are the key things to mind when doing your UX design presentation? Let’s take a look at 6 tricks you can use when it comes to acing your next UX design presentation, as well as how a prototyping tool like Justinmind can help.

Why UX design presentations are important

Sometimes, reading a report on a business idea falls short of getting stakeholder’s imagination going – it fails to get them to think of the potential at play. We have to sell our ideas if we want to get the green light from clients, managers or designers, we need to get used to public speaking.

UX presentations are the ideal time for you to paint a picture of what the product will be like, how it makes people’s lives better, and how it made users feel. This is your opportunity to show off all your hard work, to get other people on board with your project.

why ux presentations are important

A UX design presentation can bring about a lot of pressure depending on your audience – but you should always see it as a great opportunity. There tends to be a lot at stake, such as the lifeline of the project or even your own image and reputation. Getting through the pressure is a very valuable skill to have under your belt!

But selling your ideas isn’t the only reason to get comfortable with giving presentations – a UX presentation is more than a sales pitch. Your UX design presentation can be a solid add-on to your stakeholder communication and relationship. It’s not just about selling the idea, but also bringing stakeholders in and getting them involved in the work.

Some other benefits to bad-ass UX presentation skills are that they:

  • Increase your self-confidence and the confidence of others in your work
  • Are an effective way to communicate your ideas and bring more people into the project
  • Let you demonstrate your knowledge and show off on skills

Why UX design presentations go wrong

Of course, the challenges of presenting a UX design vary from project to project, but there are a few common threads that get in the way of UX designers getting their presentation just right. For some, it may be the pressure of public speaking, while others may have a hard time taking stakeholders through the creation process, or focus on the wrong aspects of the work.

The main point that we all must get right, no matter who we are or who we are presenting to, is making the presentation captivating. We have to make it easy for the audience to stay with us on the UX presentation from start to finish – that means making the whole thing engaging and even memorable.

why ux design presentations go wrong

In the 2018 Prezi Presentation Survey , it was found that while we all know presentations are key to business today, there is a specific type of presentation that wins above others: conversational presentations. That same survey asserts that 64% of people found conversational presentations more engaging.

Talking UX jargon to non-UX folk

That’s an important lesson for UX presentations. If you want to go into detail and go over the technical aspect of the job, you will need to make it engaging so people don’t drift off. Chances are, you may be talking to people who do business and not design.

This brings us to the biggest danger when making your UX design presentation: not tailoring what you say and do to suit the audience.

When people hear terms they don’t fully understand, suddenly what you’re saying has no meaning. You want to use casual terms that everyone can understand, simulating a normal conversation.

Relying on wireframes to get their point across

This issue is closely related to the tailoring of the UX presentation to your audience. Wireframes are a non-negotiable part of the product development process. They do all sorts of things like helping us define the structure of screens, lay down a navigation system, show the information architecture and help us with the flow and functionality of the product.

using wireframes in ux design presentations

But wireframes don’t include visual details – in fact, they are often described as the bare bones of the product. This means that for anyone to look at a wireframe and see the final result, they need to have been involved in making that wireframe. At least, they have to be well versed in UX design to fill in the blanks and see the finished result in their mind.

That’s why it’s not a good idea to use wireframes in UX presentations to stakeholders. They look rough because that is how they are meant to look. The untrained eye, however, won’t see the potential and strength of the base of the product. They will see empty boxes and black and white lines.

Not validating ideas before presenting them

This issue is usually accompanied by lack of preparation for UX presentations. It’s imperative to show stakeholders that their input is welcome, but that the project is in safe hands. Ideas are only worth presenting if you’ve done your homework and feel like they have been safely validated.

Nothing can crack your confidence in yourself like presenting an idea to stakeholders, only to have them find holes in your theory within a few moments. Even if it’s a minor idea that doesn’t involve the entire project, it will deliver a blow to how you feel about your own skills – and can impact your ability to finish the UX design presentation well.

Making presentations too short, or too long

Your UX presentation should feel like you’re telling a story. Stories have a beginning, when we set the scene and prepare the audience for what is about to happen or set a destination for the story. They have a middle, with the bulk of information on where we want to go – how we will get there and what that might bring us in terms of benefits.

They need an ending, something that gives us closure and answers remaining questions the audience will have.

Making the UX presentation too short will result in confused stakeholders, who expected much more detail. You’re likely to leave the audience with many burning questions, and unclear ideas regarding the project.

On the other hand, making it too long will make it easier for you to lose the audience as they lose their focus and drift far away from you and what you’re saying. Long presentations often dilute their most important points, making the entire experience less powerful. It’s important to stick only to the important parts and maintain a certain pace as you present.

Performance anxiety (not restricted solely to UXers!)

We have all suffered from anxiety before speaking publicly. After all, not all of us can be as natural presenters as Steve Jobs – but we can certainly try. Most of us suffer from the same symptoms: dry mouth, difficulty speaking loudly and clearly, fidgeting around, having trouble maintaining the pace of the presentation and so on.

All of these can harm the impact of the UX presentation, and leave you feeling like you could have done better.

performance anxiety in ux design presentations

It’s true that just because you get nervous when speaking publicly, it doesn’t mean that the work you did is any worse than it was before the presentation. The important thing to consider is that even if a movie turns out great – it’s box office performance will be hurt if the trailer is terribly put together.

People take their first impression of you seriously. And even if these people know you already, it is likely to be their first impression of the product. This means that the anxiety you feel when presenting needs to be under tight control, so people can focus on what you’re saying as opposed to how you’re saying it.

6 ways to improve your UX design presentations

So what can you do? Plenty! Let’s break down the rules for delivering steller UX design presentations, and how a wireframing and website prototyping tool like Justinmind can help you.

Practice, practice, practice

Dr. Jill Taylor rehearsed her TED talk presentation, My Stroke of Insight , 200 times before delivering it. Maybe you don’t need to go to these extremes. But the idea is to practice until you know your UX presentation like the back of your hand. You want to be saying it in your sleep. You want to be able to close your eyes and see your slides clearly.

practice is crucial for ux design presentations

A good way to see how well you’re doing is to record yourself giving the presentation. Not just audio but video, too. This way you can pick up on any ticks or awkward movements you make then correct them. Watching the videos with your teammates will help you spot areas where you need to improve.

Your UX design presentation should be smooth and feel natural to the audience, which means you need to stay calm through it all. A lot of us fidget around, distracting the audience from the arguments and points.

Use eye contact strategically

Have you ever had someone look at you far too often, for far too long during a presentation? Or found that you have trouble looking at people straight in the eye as you talk due to anxiety? These are normal issues to experience when giving your UX presentation, but it’s important to try and improve.

Eye contact is a powerful non-verbal communication tool. It can be an easy and quick way to establish some sort of connection between you and the audience. It can make the tone of your entire presentation feel more casual and direct, like you’re speaking to each one of them directly.

direct eye contact is important in all kinds of presentations

Eye contact must be respectful and confident. Research by Nicola Binetti also  found that most people prefer direct eye contact to last from 2 to 5 seconds. This can be a good rule of thumb for you as you present your work – a bit of practice is all you need here.

It’s also important to look people in the eye when they are talking to you. This may not be the case when a younger crow is concerned, but older stakeholders might still feel like looking out the window is bad form.

Use prototypes to illustrate progress, not wireframes

As we said before, presenting wireframes to people who don’t have any experience in UX design is a dangerous move. It requires a lot of imagination on the part of the stakeholder, and opens the door for disappointment in how raw the design looks.

That’s because people are visual beings. Stakeholders want to know what you’ve been doing this whole time, what you’re working towards and how we can all get there. And so, you may want to consider giving the people what they want: a prototype.

Of course, having a prototype at hand takes time and effort – and at the early stages of the product development, it might be impossible to obtain. In these cases, we urge you to either create a low-fidelity prototype specifically for the presentation or simply use images that imagine the finished product.

Use mockups and stylescapes to aid imagination

It isn’t uncommon to have a client who knows literally nothing about design. Without a shared design language, it can be difficult to express tricky concepts and user experience design rationale.

That’s why using a visual aid like a mockup or stylescape is really useful. Mockups can help your client visualize and imagine how the final product is going to look, much like a prototype.

Having a visual aid can be a powerful add-on to your UX presentation. Just consider Dr. Jill Taylor, the speaker that detailed the experience of her own stroke. She brought an actual human brain to her TED talk – if anyone in that room wasn’t listening before, they definitely started after she pulled out a human organ.

use prototypes for visual aid in presentations

While presenting a mockup or prototype might not be the exact same, it does show that your aid can have a huge impact on the audience. In Dr. Jill’s case, her aid had a real wow factor. With your mockup, you could go for the wow factor and focus on the visual side – or go the opposite way, and highlight the functionality as opposed to looks.

Hold a Q&A session

Remember the single most successful type of presentation? Ah, yes – engaging and conversational presentations. Making your presentation conversational can be a challenge. You need a bid of structure to make sure you check the right boxes, but you also want flexibility to answer questions. How can you balance each side?

A brief Q&A might be the answer. It’s easier for you to allocate a specific time when stakeholders can ask their questions, so you don’t lose your train of thought or pace during the presentation.

hold a Q&A session during your ux design presentation

It’s also a time when you can really talk and have a less structured form of communication with the audience. Give them the freedom to ask anything they like – and in turn, they will help you hash out any doubts or observations they have. As an added bonus, this gives you another opportunity to show off all your knowledge and work by showing them you know all the details.

Aside from reinforcing the main points in your talk, the Q&A segment can also be used to highlight your expertise further, depending on how you answer the questions. Knowing all the details and answers gives you another opportunity to show off all your knowledge and work. Beware of freezing and not having the answers to the questions, though.

Try to think of any questions that might arise from your presentation and practice, practice, practice. Get more people involved if you like, give the UX presentation to them and see if they have any questions. Try to put yourself in the stakeholders shoes: what is more important to them? What is their own area of expertise? What details are they likely to pay most attention to?

When it comes to giving a powerful presentation, the secret is adapting and covering your bases. You want to make sure to deliver all the crucial arguments, while molding the UX presentation to the audience. Remember to do your homework, to be prepared and be in control of your own nerves.

Combine snazzy mockups and high fidelity prototypes with good eye contact and a smile. Speak clearly and be open to two-way communication instead of it being just you speaking. Remember that your audience wants to stay with you from start to finish – you just have to make it easy for them.

Web Layout Best Practices: 12 Timeless UI Patterns Analyzed

By Cameron Chapman

Cameron comes from a design background and is the author of two web design books: Color for Web Design and The Smashing Idea Book.

UI design trends may come and go on the web, but several UI patterns have stood the test of time. What makes a UI pattern timeless? Adherence to web layout best practices that result in a combination of user-friendliness and an adaptability to changing trends and technology.

There are a few criteria that make UI patterns endure. User-friendliness is one of them. A web UI design pattern that “looks amazing” but doesn’t facilitate great usability is not one that will last for long .

The most useful UI patterns are also adaptable to changing trends. Card-style and grid-based layouts, for example, can be implemented by UI designers in a variety of ways. Adaptability makes it possible for them to continue looking modern and on-trend, even though they may have been around for years. The same is true for the other UI patterns included here.

Card-style Web Layout Patterns

Card-style layouts were popularized by sites like Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter. They have become standard on news sites and blogs, as they’re well suited to placing a lot of content on a page while keeping each piece distinct.

As the name suggests, these layouts use content blocks that resemble physical cards of various shapes and sizes. There are two primary layout formats. One layout arranges cards with equal dimensions on a grid (as seen on the Toptal design blog homepage ), while the other uses a fluid layout with different size cards arranged into orderly columns but without distinct rows (like Pinterest ’s layout).

Card-style layouts work well because they allow different content to be arranged in an orderly way while keeping all the pieces separate. Cards are also familiar to people because they recognize card-shaped items from the real world. They make sense psychologically and are easy for people to use even if they’re new to a website.

Web layout best practices like using cards improve the user experience

Split-screen Layouts

Technically, split-screen layouts date back to 1903 , to the film Life of an American Firefighter by Edwin S. Porter. But in web UI design, split-screen layouts started gaining popularity in 2013 and really started picking up steam in 2016.

Split-screen layouts are a popular design choice when two elements need to have equal weight on a page and are often used in designs where text and an image both need to be featured prominently. Placing them side by side instead of vertically or with a text overlaying the image is a conscious design choice that can lend a sophisticated, minimalist quality. Two images placed side by side are also commonly seen, sometimes with text overlays.

Most split-screen designs are divided fairly evenly, though some are split at different ratios. (33:66 or 40:60 seem to be the most popular ratios; when a screen is divided into a smaller size than ⅓, it’s more like a sidebar than a true split-screen design.)

Split-screen designs are particularly well suited to product pages on eCommerce sites. Product images need to be prominent on these pages, but so does essential information like price, specifications, add-to-cart buttons, and product options.

Basic website layout: split screen

Big Typography

Big typography has been around since the advent of the web but gained popularity when mobile design became prevalent.

Large type is especially popular in headings and titles, but it’s also seen in body copy on some sites. When the right font is chosen, larger text is more readable and improves the user experience. Plus, it makes a powerful visual statement. It’s particularly popular in minimalist design , where other visual elements are mostly absent.

Website best practices: big typography is eye-catching and easy to read

Personalization

Personalization algorithms have been around for years, tailoring digital experiences to each person’s preferences. AI has made these algorithms even more useful, with features like suggestion algorithms that can now accurately predict what a person will want to watch, read, learn, or purchase next.

US-based full-time freelance UI designers wanted

With membership sites, people want to see content that meets their wants and needs. Based on subscribers’ previous choices, Netflix has superior predictive algorithms that offer the movies and shows they’re most likely to watch. Sites like Medium show people articles they’re likely to enjoy when they log in, based both on what they’ve read and enjoyed previously.

But personalization can go too far. Ad network algorithms have become so advanced they can sometimes predict what people may be interested in purchasing even when they haven’t searched for a product online or otherwise mentioned it. This level of prediction can sometimes make people feel as if they’re being spied on. For this reason, it’s wise for UI designers to use personalization with care.

Website best practices: personalization improves user experience

Grids have long been part of UI design, starting with table-based layouts in the late 1990s (though they were used in print layout for things like books and newspapers long before that). When CSS gained popularity for creating layouts, more elegant grid systems were developed, the earliest notable example being the 960.gs grid .

Grids provide visual balance and order to a design, which makes content easier for people to consume. At the same time, grids can offer a lot of flexibility in a web layout. The majority of grid systems use either 12 or 16 columns with gutters in between. Some websites that use grid-based layouts make the grids a prominent feature of the design. In contrast, others are more subtle, with the grid only becoming apparent upon close inspection (and sometimes only when an actual grid is overlaid onto the design).

In addition to column-based layout grids, baseline grids are commonly used in web design to space elements horizontally in a logical way. It’s most apparent in typography when examining the spacing between lines of body copy and headlines, for example. Baseline horizontal grid spacing is closely related to the vertical grid spacing used in web design. Implementing website spacing best practices ensures that spacing is consistent and coherent across a site.

Web layout best practices: grids add order to information

Magazine-style Web Layouts

News and periodical industries heavily influenced magazine-style layouts on the web. In the early days, these layouts were mostly seen on news websites and online magazines. With time, their popularity grew in other sectors, and they are now seen on different types of sites, including eCommerce sites and blogs.

Magazine-style layouts include a featured article (or sometimes multiple featured articles in a carousel or similar format), as well as secondary and tertiary articles on the homepage. They also tend to have multiple columns for content, sometimes divided into sections. These web layouts work well for sites with a great deal of content, particularly those with fresh content added daily.

Magazine-style web layout

Single-page Layouts

Single-page layouts put all of the primary content for a site on a single web page. Navigation is done through scrolling, often with shortcuts to jump to particular sections and sometimes with parallax scrolling effects. Occasionally, they may use secondary pages for terms and conditions, privacy policies, or other information that isn’t part of the main content, but this shouldn’t prevent the layout from being considered single-page.

Single-page website layouts are an excellent solution for sites with sparse content. They’re also a perfect choice for narrative content, such as interactive children’s books.

Single page web layout framework

F- and Z-Patterns

F- and Z-patterns refer to how a person’s eye moves over the page—how people scan the content. An F-pattern has prominent content across the top of the page, with additional content aligned under it along the page’s left side (in roughly an “F” shape). A Z-pattern has prominent content along the top, with additional valuable content further down. The eye is drawn diagonally from the upper right to the lower left of the page (in roughly a “Z” shape).

F-patterns are suited to pages with more content than Z-patterns, where there’s a very defined visual hierarchy. Z-patterns are more useful when there are two pieces of equally (or near equally) relevant content that the visitor should see.

F-shaped web layout patterns work well for sites with a lot of content

In the simplest terms, asymmetry is the absence of symmetry. In design, asymmetry creates a more dynamic and organic visual impact. In most cases, asymmetry is created using images and text that do not perfectly balance each other. Asymmetry can also be created or reinforced via background elements, such as using a different pattern between various page sections.

Since asymmetry creates a dynamic, energetic visual impression, it’s useful for brands that want to communicate that kind of image. Asymmetry can also be unexpected, making designs more memorable, and has practical uses when the content included wouldn’t work well in a symmetrical layout.

Web layout patterns: asymmetrical designs

Clean and Simple Web Layouts

Clean and simple layouts have gone in and out of fashion in UI design for decades, though they’ve been in more often than not. The beauty of these layouts is that they focus squarely on the content, without visual clutter .

Clean and simple layouts are suitable for virtually any kind of website. Many of the other UI patterns here work well alongside clean layouts. There are clean versions of grids, magazine-style layouts, asymmetrical designs, and split-screen layouts. Many of the most elegant websites could be considered “clean,” regardless of what other design features they may incorporate.

Clean web layout best practices

Navigation Tabs

Navigation tabs were originally a mainstay of skeuomorphic design, resembling tabs on file folders or binder dividers. As it’s matured, however, tab-style navigation doesn’t always resemble a realistic tab. Instead, a hallmark of navigation tabs is that each item in a menu has a visual separation from other menu items. Sometimes, this is subtle, and sometimes, it only appears when a menu item is selected or hovered over.

Navigation tabs are best suited to smaller menus with only a handful of items. Otherwise, they can look cluttered. However, they can be combined with dropdowns for submenus to add to their functionality. They’re also generally seen in horizontal navigation, though vertical examples do exist.

Tabbed navigation web layout trends

Content carousels are commonly found in the header or hero section of a website. They often contain images in conjunction with text, though some may only include one or the other. They’re used to display multiple content pieces within a single section of a website when space is at a premium.

Carousels work really well for a few uses. Featured content on a blog or news site is well suited for carousels. Products, promotions, and sales are also commonly featured in carousels on eCommerce sites. While carousels generally appear near the top of a web page, they can also be used within subsections to highlight related content. They’re a popular choice for both homepage content and individual pages for specific categories of content or products.

Carousels are a basic website layout format

Timeless Web Layout Best Practices

Timeless UI design is adaptable and user-friendly. It works for various use cases and looks as good today as it did 10 years ago (and will look just as good in another 10 years) with only minor modifications.

Following web layout best practices while incorporating timeless UI design elements will produce a website that doesn’t look or feel dated in a short timespan. It allows UI designers to create digital experiences that delight users and accomplish brand goals.

Understanding the basics

What is the best website layout.

The best website layout is dependent on the purpose of the website and its content. What may be “best” for one site could be completely wrong for another. Following web layout best practices allows for flexibility in the exact design of each website so it can be tailored to best suit users.

What makes a good website layout?

Good website layouts are suited to the content they’re presenting, prioritize user experience in addition to (or over) aesthetics, and can endure changing technologies and design trends. Following web layout best practices and timeless UI web design patterns results in great websites.

What should be kept in mind when designing a website?

The most important thing to keep in mind when it comes to UI web design is how design decisions will affect the people who will be using the website. Following web layout best practices and standards and conducting sufficient user research helps ensure a positive user experience that also accomplishes brand goals.

Why is the layout of a website important?

The layout of a website largely determines how visitors to that website will consume and interact with the content presented on the site. An excellent web layout design will reinforce the content on the site while making it easier to consume and providing a positive experience for visitors.

What are web design trends?

Web design trends include design patterns and practices that are currently popular. In some cases, what starts out as a trend improves user experience to the point that it becomes a standard or best practice. Patterns like card-based layouts, grid design, and asymmetry all fall into this category.

Tutorial 1: An Introduction To UI Design

Introduction.

Welcome to day one of your five-day UI (user interface) design short course, and congratulations on taking your first step towards becoming a fully-fledged UI designer! As a complete beginner, consider this course your introduction to this exciting field. Over the next five days, you’ll learn the fundamental skills of UI design—putting your newfound knowledge from each tutorial into practice as you design your first-ever climate change app from scratch.

Let’s take a look at what we’ll cover in today’s tutorial:

  • What does a UI designer do?
  • What are the skills required to become a UI designer?
  • What we’ll be learning over the next five days
  • Setting up your artboard in Adobe XD

Ready to get stuck in? Let’s go!

1. What does a UI designer do?

UI design refers to the visual design of a digital product’s interface. It’s the process of creating interfaces (namely apps and websites) with a focus on look, style, and interactivity. A UI designer will design the movement between different screens, and create the visual elements—and their interactive properties—that facilitate user interaction.

While UI design is largely a visual discipline, UI designers work on a vast array of projects. In order to design accessible, user-friendly interfaces, UI designers bring empathy into every stage of the design process—from designing screens, icons, and interactions, to creating a style guide that ensures consistency and the proper implementation of a visual language across an entire product. They also take great care in making sure the product is accessible and inclusive for all users, as opposed to a select few.

Think about your favorite app. When you first downloaded it, you didn’t spend hours working out how to use it—you just started using it straight away. This is because the UI designer uses stylistic elements like patterns, spacing, and color to guide the user in a way that feels natural.

What’s the difference between UI design and UX design?

UI design and UX (user experience) design are often used interchangeably. While they both share the same end goal of providing a good experience for the user, UI designers and UX designers work different sides of the same coin.

UX designers enhance user satisfaction by improving the usability and accessibility of a product, while UI designers enhance user satisfaction by making the product’s interface look and feel enjoyable for the user. UX designers draw out the map of the product, which UI designers then flesh it out with visual and interactive touchpoints. UX and UI designers often work in tandem to maximize the responsiveness, efficiency, and accessibility of a website.

What does the UI design field currently look like?

As you embark on this journey towards becoming a UI designer, it’s important to know for sure whether you’ll be in demand—so let’s take a quick look at the facts.

UI design is widely considered to be one of the most fulfilling careers in tech—with even senior product designers expected to have UI design skills in their arsenal. Promising creativity, variety, and a competitive salary to boot, a career in UI design offers tech hopefuls the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives. In 2020, there are just shy of around 6,000 job listings associated with the search term “user interface designer” on indeed.com (in the US). According to Glassdoor , the national average salary for a user interface designer is $80,450 per year in the United States.

On this list of the 19 most in-demand digital creative talent for 2020 , UI designer ranks fourth. The best part? UI designers can work remotely from anywhere in the world—with an increasing number of flexible and remote UI design roles cropping up across job boards. It’s safe to say that UI design is here to stay, and the field is only growing.

2. What are the skills required to become a UI designer?

As with any career path, a career in UI design requires a strong grasp on both the technical skills that you need in order to produce your designs, and the soft skills that will see you excel in the workplace. Let’s take a quick look at the three main skills a UI designer should have:

  • A career in UI design requires a mastery of at least one of the popular industry-standard tools, such as Sketch , Adobe XD , or Figma , and prototyping tools like InVision . These tools are used across the board in any UI design role, and once you’ve gotten to grips with one, it won’t take you long to settle into using another.
  • A UI designer needs to be well versed in the fundamental methods, theories, and practices of the field. This includes things like color theory , typography , and UI design patterns , as well as fundamental design approaches such as the Gestalt Principles that help you to gain a deeper insight into how users perceive and interpret your work.
  • Strong collaboration skills are a huge requirement for any UI designer. From understanding the vision of the client to working with the wireframes provided by the UX designer, to handing the final prototype over to the developers—UI designers collaborate at every level. If you consider yourself a great collaborator in your current role, you’re already off to a great start!

3. What we’ll be learning over the next five days

Now that we’re all caught up on what UI design actually is, let’s take a look at what we’ll be learning over the next five days.

During this short course, you’ll use the fundamental pillars of UI design (wireframing, symbols and buttons, color, typography, and hierarchy) to create your first ever app log-in screen from scratch using industry-standard tool Adobe XD.

As an alternative to Adobe XD, our team also suggests giving Figma a try. Figma is a popular design tool that offers a 30-day free trial, providing ample time for you to explore its features and functionalities. You can follow this  link  to access Figma.

You’ll choose to design one of two different climate change apps:

  • Activist App: the app that sees you foster conversations around environmental activism with like minded peers, and
  • Ethical Eater: the app that helps you track your meat consumption and share healthy recipes with friends

web ui presentation

We’ve created our own designs to use as a guideline, but you’ll have full creative license to design your own version of whichever app screen you go for. You’ll go through the exact same steps regardless of the app you choose.

Each tutorial will see you add new elements to your design, and by the end, you’ll have a strong understanding of the methods and process involved in creating an app screen.

Let’s look at what you can expect from each tutorial.

  • Today, you’ll set up your artboard on Adobe XD and play around with the tool to familiarize yourself with its functions. You’ll choose which app screen to design, and hopefully do some extra-curricular reading on a few of the topics we touched on earlier.
  • Day two will see us learn about UI elements, and you’ll create a low-fidelity wireframe for your app screen.
  • On day three we’ll learn about symbols and basic shapes, and you’ll create buttons and a logo for your app screen.
  • On day four we’ll learn all about text and typography, and you’ll choose the font and copy for your app’s tagline.
  • On the fifth and final day, you’ll bring your app to life by choosing colors and imagery. You’ll also learn how to export and share your work.

To put your newfound skills to the test, you’ll round off the course with a quiz on day six. This will be your chance to recap on everything you learned over the week.

So, let’s get set up!

4. Setting up your artboard in Adobe XD

First, let’s download and install Adobe XD . For the purposes of this short course, the free version is fine to use. Once installed, open up the application to view the home screen.

Adobe XD home screen

To get started, you’ll be presented with an array of artboard presets for iOS, Android, iPad, and web screens. You can also create an artboard with custom width and height. For this course, we’ll be using the artboard for iPhone X/XS/11 Pro (375 ✕ 812). If this option is not available, please select iPhone 14 Pro Max 430x932px or the latest available iteration instead.

Once you’ve selected the correct artboard, you’ll be taken to XD’s ‘design mode’ where you’ll be able to see everything you need to create an app screen. The image below shows the artboard and the design settings/tools on the far right of the screen.

Tour of Adobe XD artboard

Think of your artboard as a canvas where you can add and style all of your user interface elements. Once your artboard is set up, you’re good to go!

Today we learned what goes into being a UI designer, and where UI design skills can take you. We looked at the project we’ll be working on over the next five days, and dove into what we’ll be covering in each tutorial. Finally, we learned how to get set up with Adobe XD and create our very first artboard. That’s pretty good progress for day one!

Tomorrow, we’ll get to grips with wireframing, shapes, and UI patterns. See you then!

Set up and name your artboard with the correct dimensions in Adobe XD. Play around with the functions to get familiar with the tool! You can refer to Adobe’s tutorial on adding and editing artboards if you need more help.

Take the quiz below to make sure you've learned all the important information—and that it really sticks!

What Is User Interface (UI) Design? The Beginner’s Guide

Anna Fitzgerald

Updated: June 15, 2022

Published: January 01, 2021

“How do I use this?” These are the last five words that a UI designer wants to hear.

Team planning user interface design of website

When creating a website, app, wearable, or any digital product, you want it to be as easy and efficient to use as possible. That might mean making the log-in button obvious on the homepage of a membership site, or adding a cart icon in a clear spot on an ecommerce website so visitors can go to the checkout page immediately.

These decisions are part of user interface (UI) design. In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about this topic, including:

  • what is UI design ;
  • UI design principles ;
  • UI design tools ;
  • how to design UI for a website ; and
  • best UI design examples .

What is UI design?

UI design is the process of creating the look and feel of an application’s user interface. The user interface (UI) encompasses both the appearance and interactivity of an app. The colors users see, text they read, buttons they click on, and animations they interact with are all part of the app’s UI and therefore the responsibilities of a UI designer.

UI plays an essential role in the user experience . A user will not have a good experience if the design of the app is not intuitive or cohesive — but UI is not the same as UX. When comparing UX vs UI , you’ll find UX is a more all-encompassing term. It is the process of researching, developing, testing, and refining all aspects of a product to ensure the user’s needs and expectations are met. UI, on the other hand, is more cosmetic, focusing only on the product’s presentation.

That does not mean the UI designer’s job is easy, however. They must decide what to put on the page and where. For example, the logo might be placed at the top of the page, or the bottom, or both. The buttons might change colors when a user hovers over them, or have no animation. Keeping the hierarchy and interactivity of elements in mind, the UI designer must ensure that every visual element is attractive, engaging, and aligned with the other elements on the page as well as the brand as a whole.

UI Design Principles

While every application will require a unique interface, there are a few fundamental principles that should guide any project. You’ll find dozens online and in textbooks, but there is a handful that are most well-known and regarded. These include the 10 Usability Heuristics for UI Design  by Jakob Nielsen, The Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design  by Ben Shneiderman, and Principles of Interaction Design  by Bruce Tognazzini. Most of these principles overlap, so we’ll condense and summarize them below.

1. Be consistent.

Consistency in the colors you feature, typography you choose, animations you create — even in the words you use — will lead to an overall cohesion in your interface that’s important to the user experience and to your brand identity.

For example, say on one form, the button text is “Submit” and on another it’s “Send.” Your users should not have to wonder whether these different words mean the same thing. Making all button copy for forms either “Submit” or “Send” will maintain internal consistency, which is one half of this principle.

The other is external consistency. That means you want to follow the conventions of other products to avoid forcing your users to learn something new. For example, in the navigation menu of virtually any site, you’ll find an option labelled “Home.” This refers to its homepage. Now imagine you had a navigation option “House.” Most users would figure that meant the homepage, but not without spending an extra second or two puzzling it out. You can avoid increasing the user’s cognitive load in this way by following the conventions set by other websites and applications.

2. Make users feel in control.

You want to make users feel like they’re in control of the interface so they will spend more time exploring and learning the application. That means enabling them to make mistakes or reverse their actions. So popups should have clear close buttons, checkout pages should have easy and clear ways to go back or edit the cart information, editors should have undo and redo options, and so on.

Here’s an example of a lightbox popup on LoveOhLou, which clearly offers the user the options to enter their email address or click the close button.

The Best Examples of Effective Web Design Presentation

the best web design presentation examples

Why is the web design presentation important as much as the design itself? How do you present your design work and create a great first impression? We took the time to find great examples and explain the importance of a good presentation for a website. Take your time to find the style that will prove the most effective and complement your work.

Here are some great examples of how to present web design:

1. two-part onepager web design presentation.

Sometimes, one page is all you need to have on your website. You can easily incorporate all the vital information you require. By using distinct sections, you can differentiate testimonials, contact, about me, and multiple ‘call to action’ buttons. The problem may appear when you present your web design to a client. Without an easy way to navigate, the client may have trouble understanding how the website will feel when developed. Consider using the style on the web design presentation similar to the example below.

The designer took the liberty to slice the design into two parts. This way, you can keep the first impression of the landing page in focus. Additionally, you can present the rest of the page and all the details needed.

2. Background Image and Drop Shadow

Simple, yet visually appealing is the ideal to strive for in any design. That is especially true with web design. Notice how the structural line flows from the background to the actual image of the landing page. Just a touch of drop shadow effect is enough to make the design visible.

3. Complementary Flat Background Color

While we are a matter of simple, yet effective designs. Here is another great example. Sometimes just adding a background in a complementary color can mean a world for the design.

4. Website Redesign Presentation

Side by side web design presentation is excellent for presenting multiple concepts, or various pages of a website. It is a lot busier and detailed, but a viable way to present. Find a way to structure and organize all of the pages so they are easier to comprehend.

5. Perspective Presentation

This way of presenting is commonly used in business card design. However, you can see it works for web design as well. The central focus is on branding and making sure your website fits your brand instead of the content of the website.

6. Outside the Box

Think Outside The Box! No better way to put it for this fantastic presentation. Just extending these red shapes to the outside of the landing page box, makes the characters and the entire design come to life.

7. Hovering Screen Design Presentation

This presentation is the most sophisticated design presentation on our list. 3D elements and shadow give a surreal impression of a hovering design.

8. Organic Nature Inspired Presentation

In contrast to the surreal presentation above, we have an organic, nature-inspired example. The greenery looks so live that it feels almost like it’s animated, even though it’s a static web presentation.

9. Animated Music Website Presentation

Moving away from static website presentations, here is a refreshment. A tiny animation can bring the design to life. In this example, the only thing animated is the thin sound waves. And it looks fantastic. You can check the animation by clicking here.

10. Video Animation Web Presentation

Another interesting example is the use of a timelapse video. Such as one that will probably be used on the actual site. With animations and videos incorporated into the presentation, there is no need for fancy backgrounds. Keeping it simple is the way to go. Again, you can check the animation by clicking here.

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 9:03 pm

UI UX design presentation is the process of creating a visually appealing and user-friendly interface for a software or web application. The goal of UI UX design presentation is to create a seamless and intuitive experience for the user, while also meeting the specific design requirements of the application.

UI UX design presentation can be divided into two main categories: front-end design and back-end design. Front-end design focuses on the appearance and layout of the user interface, while back-end design focuses on the functionality and design of the underlying software.
