How to Make a Bow with Multiple Ribbons

How to make a multiple ribbon bow by www.southerncharmwreaths.com/blog

If you are a frequent follower of mine, you know that I am a ribbon addict! I can’t get enough of fabulous ribbon because ribbon just makes me so happy!! Therefore, I’ve been searching for a way to make a bow with multiple ribbons using only a few yards of each ribbon.  I saw this technique once at a floral show but only now have I mastered the technique to give it my flair. You see I had a customer request multiple bows with her wreath order but I forgot to purchase enough ribbon to make full bows.  So I started thinking of ways to use the ribbon matching her wreath but where I only needed a few yards and then remembered this technique.

Why I LOVE using this bow technique :

  • Save money! If you want to make a bow using expensive ribbon use this technique to incorporate the ribbon into the bow and add less expensive ribbon as the other ribbon choices.
  • Limited Supplies – If you only have a couple of yards of ribbon, you can still incorporate it into a bow.
  • Whimsical Look – This bow technique is definitely a more modern look but you can use traditional colors or bow fabrics to freshen up any traditional décor to a more modern look.

Notes/Tips :

If you have too much ribbon edge showing in the center, you can trim it with scissors.

I prefer my bows to have an odd number of loops; therefore, making the fourth ribbon tail short tricks the eye into thinking that there is another loop in the bow of that color but you can easily add another loop if you prefer.

Feel free to change the loop sizes to make a smaller or larger bow to work with your craft or décor need.

Feel free to add more ribbon making each ribbon layer 1” larger that the first.

Quick Reference to the above video :

Ribbon 1- 2.5” wide by 1 yd. 11” long (make 3 loops 5” long)

Ribbon 2- 1.5” wide by 1 yd. 28” long (make 4 loops 6” long)

Ribbon 3- 1.5” wide by 1 yd. 22” long (make 3 loops 7” long)

Great tutorial, thanks as always! This will come in handy as I am often trying to mix different ribbon and had previously finished each layer and then attached them to each other. Makes for a very bulky middle though – this makes perfect sense and I want to kick myself for not trying it sooner! 🙂

Glad you liked it Renee.

How much would you charge for this bow?

I would calculate the cost/expenses. Multiply it by 3. Add 20% labor and then if shipping any shipping charges (box, tapes, labels, etc.) This would be my retail cost. I purchased most of this ribbon wholesale.

Wondering if u have a tutorial video that shows how to make a ribbon wreath (no mesh) I saw one in a store here in San antonio Tx . The wreath had 4 different ribbons and they were loops attached to a 10 inch pencil wreath, shop owner did say u do not cut the ribbon until the very end after u trim the 4 tails. U also do not open the loops until u r completely done making the all the loops. Attempted to make one but I must be missing a step because my ties show even after I open the loops. They were not visible on the display. U could not see any part of the work wreath. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

How to Make a Bow with Ribbon

With our tips, you will finally master that intimidating bow made from ribbon. Make it yours!

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

  • What You'll Need

Step 1: Create Bow Loops

Step 2: fasten the bow, step 3: fluff the bow, step 4: add the bow tails, how to make a bow with thick ribbon, how to make a bow with wired ribbon, how to make a big bow out of ribbon.

Don't let that big spool of ribbon and past Pinterest fails intimidate you. Follow our easy step-by-step guide and you'll learn how to make a bow with ribbon in no time.

What You'll Need

To start, make sure you have a few essentials on hand: scissors , chenille stems, and ribbon . If you're making large bows, plan to use two spools of ribbon per bow (more on that later). You'll also want to be sure to have a clear idea of how big or small you want your final bow. Also, keep in mind just how far that spool of ribbon will get you based on the intended size of your completed bow.

We tend to think fuller is always better—so, if you're going to battle on whether to make it big or make it full, opt for a more conservative size in order to maximize fullness. These directions should work with just about any variety of ribbon, though you'll have less trouble keeping shape if you opt for wired ribbon.

Our step-by-step bow guide is simple and results in a perky, rounded shape that attaches easily to gifts, treetops, garlands, wreaths, and more. Use longer or shorter pieces of ribbon to adjust the size of the bow. It's easiest to form the first loop before cutting the ribbon from the spool. The size and thickness of your loop will determine the size of your bow.

Start with a spool of ribbon of your choice. Remove the ribbon from the spool, then start looping the ribbon around to create a circle. The size of the circle with roughly be the size of your finished bow. The more times you're able to loop the ribbon around, the fuller your bow will end up, so opt for at least three full circles. Just remember: More is always better (not to mention easier to work with).

Cinch the loop in the middle with a length of twine or a chenille stem.

Once you're satisfied with your loops—or have reached the end of your ribbon—pinch the center so each side is a loop of equal size. Use a chenille stem to fasten. What you should have at this point is a flat figure-8 type bow. Don't be discouraged, it will start to come to life in Step 3.

Begin to pull individual bow loops out from the center, alternating pulls from each end.

To fluff the bow, pull one loop out from the center of the bow. Wire ribbon will allow you to mold the loop to create a rounded shape. Next, pull a loop out from the other side of the bow and, once again, mold the loop to create a rounded shape. Repeat this process, alternating sides with each pull, until all the loops have been pulled out and fluffed. At this point, you should have a nice shape—all that's missing are the tails.

Once all the loops are formed, tie a long piece of ribbon around the center to make the tails of the bow.

This is where your second spool of ribbon comes in. Tie a long trail of ribbon around the center of the bow, being sure to cover the chenille stems from view. If you'll be fixing the bow to a tree, wreath, etc., you can opt to leave out the ends of the chenille stems to help attach the bow. Let the tails trail down to the desired length. To finish, snip each ribbon end at a diagonal. Whatever you do, don't leave those blunt ends—you've come too far.

If you're making a bow out of ribbon that is particularly thick, be sure to adjust the size of your loops accordingly. If you make them too tight, you'll have a hard time getting your bow to look like anything other than a round puff. Don't be afraid to start over if you realize you need to make your bow larger or smaller. The beauty of our process is that nothing is cut until the very end, once you've inspected your bow from all sides and are pleased with the size and shape.

As we mentioned at the start of this tutorial, it's best to make a bow with wired ribbon as it helps the final product hold shape much better than other varieties. Satin ribbon is particularly difficult to work with when creating anything other than a petite, flat bow. If you just returned home from the store and realized you inadvertently picked up a spool of wired ribbon, consider it a happy mistake. You're on your way to creating our 4-step bow with ease.

For a Christmas Tree:

If you're looking for a giant bow to place atop your Christmas spruce, you'll just want to double the process above to create a fuller effect. It's as simple as creating one more bow following the same exact steps (1 through 4) listed above. When your bows are complete, attach one in front and the other behind the top stem of the tree. Now you've created a Christmas tree topper that dazzles from every angle.

For a (Really Big) Gift:

The trick to making your bow bigger is to simply buy a longer spool in order to create bigger loops. To ensure you don't lose any of the fullness that a smaller bow would produce, you should try to find a thicker ribbon as well and even create more loops than you would with a more petite version, so it still fills out nicely. Again, wire ribbon is the best route, particularly if you want to take your bow making skills to new heights. Oh, and if you're hoping to make a bow big enough to fit that new car you're getting her for Christmas, you should probably just go ahead and pick that up on Amazon. This one is Prime eligible and will only set you back around $20—far less than all that ribbon (and patience) a homemade version would likely require.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

I am going to start out this post with a disclaimer.   I am not a professional bow-maker.   I do not have any degrees in bow-making.  I don’t even have any little letters behind my name such as  PBMA (Professional Bow Makers of America).   But, I’ve been making bows for as long as I can remember.  It takes practice. Even a non-professional bow-maker like myself has  some difficult times when working with larger ribbons.  That said… I decided to share with you a little technique to create the look  of large, double-ribbon bows.  It’s so easy – you, too, may  one  day become  a member of PBMA.

Before we get started…let me apologize for the overload of pics.   But, I wanted to make sure I presented you with a thorough tutorial.   So sit back and relax…this may take a while.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

My wreath was inspired by these cute, wood plaques.  They were regularly $2.49 on sale half price.  I found some ribbon which coordinated, but wasn’t so Valentine-specific.  Let’s start making a bow…

— Step One —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

For a larger bow, I like to use about 3 yards of ribbon.  At one end, I create a small loop and hold it with my thumb.  This will create the center loop of the bow.

— Step Two —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Twist the tail of the ribbon, and again, hold it secure with  your thumb.

— Step Three —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Now, it’s just a matter of creating a loop and twisting the tail behind  it –  creating a loop and twisting the tail behind it… etc.

— Step Four —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

When you create a loop and twist, this allows you to create a loop on the opposite side.

— Step Five —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Try to mirror the loops on each side…i.e. 4 and 4 – or 5 and 5, etc.   Also, try to keep the first row (or layer) of loops the same length.

— Step Six —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Continue to make loops and then twist, but lengthen your loops to create  a “second” row or layer.  You can add as many loops as you desire to get the fullness and  size  of bow you need.   Keep in mind, you will be adding another layer  with  the coordinating ribbon.  Your bow should look something like this…

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

At this stage, I will attach it to the wreath before adding the second layer of ribbon.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

— Step Seven —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

For the second ribbon, the plaid, I am not going to make a traditional “bow” to add to the polka dot bow.  Rather, I am going to show you  how to make loops and  add them so it appears that you’ve intertwined  two ribbons into one,  large luscious bow.  Cut about six 12″ lengths of ribbon and double them…

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

I have shared with you before one of my floral secrets…   wood skewers from the Dollar Store.  Skewers are a good way to insert and attach objects to wreaths  so they do not have to be permanently attached.   It’s the “recycler” in me.   Cut a length of skewer and a small length of floral wire.  Place the piece of skewer around the tips of the ribbon, and wrap with the  wire – as seen above. I used six plaid loops for my bow.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

— Step Eight —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Now you simply start adding the loops to the original bow.  The skewers make it easy to poke the loops right in.  Once you have added all the secondary loops you want, your bow should look like this.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

But, we’re not thru. Oh no, oh no.

— Step Nine —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Create about three “mini” loops.  Use the same method as I showed for creating the secondary loops,  but instead of a 12″ length of ribbon use about 6″.

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

Tuck the mini loops into the center of the bow.  Now it truly looks like you combined two separate ribbons when  creating your bow.

— Step Ten —

How to Create a Double-Ribbon Bow Like a Pro | The Everyday Home | www.everydayhomeblog.com

I create “tails” for my bows separately by using the same skewer and wire method.  This allows you more control over the placement,  versus when its attached to the bow.   I added a few silks that coordinated with the ribbons and the little wood hearts.  I also glued wire onto the back of the wood hearts  so again, they could be easily removed.

Here’s my little secret for extending out the life and use of roses when they start to fade away…

Pull off as many browned or wilted petals as possible. Cut the stems  really  short (about 3-4″),  and bundle them in a tight bouquet.   Then, place them in a container with a smaller opening which keeps the tight bundle held together.

Merry Christmas 2017

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

One of my favorite things to do is decorate my door for the holidays.  Wreaths are always great to dress up a door, and sometimes simple wreaths are the best.  A nice touch to a simple wreath is a big bow.  It’s one of the things I love to attach to a wreath.  I have been making these bows for a long time and thought I’d share with you how to make a big double bow for a wreath.  Or really any place in your home.

The supplies you need are simple.  2 different sizes/designs of wire edged ribbon (I used about 12 ft. of each ribbon for this bow) and a pipe cleaner or two.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

The first thing you do is lay the smaller ribbon on top of the larger ribbon.  Make the center of your bow by creating a small loop. Keep your thumb inside the loop, holding down the end of your ribbon as you make the rest of the bow.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

From that center loop, create a bigger loop on each side .  Going back and forth while holding the center together.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

Here’s the main thing to remember. Since we are using 2 ribbons, you will have to twist the ribbon at the center of the bow, as you begin to make the loops on each side. Making sure that the smaller ribbon is always on the top of the larger ribbon.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

I make 4 loops on each side.  I try to make them all the same size, but sometimes that doesn’t work and that is why we love the wire edge on the ribbon.  To finish off the bow create one large loop that goes down and will loop back up to the bow.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

Gather the middle of the bow together, insert the pipe cleaner into the center loop and pull it back gathering all the other loops.  Tighten the center of the bow and twist the pipe cleaner together.  Just trim off the end of the ribbon.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

Then you can fluff the bow and spread out the loops to get a look that you like.  You also want to decide how long you want your tails to hang and cut them to the desired length.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

Then add it to your wreath! Or your mantel or your tree.  You know, wherever you need a big beautiful bow.  Perfect!

I’ve also got a video tutorial showing you all the steps on how to make a double ribbon bow.

What Ribbon To Use For A Double Ribbon Bow

I think that one of the hardest parts about making a double ribbon bow is deciding what ribbons to use.  I say, use whatever ribbon you like or that matches your decor.  As long as you like it, I think that’s what matters.

But in case you’re not sure which ribbons would look good together, I put together a couple ideas below of what ribbons you could choose when making your bow.  I found all of these ribbons at Michaels in case you wanted to see if you could find the same.  And they are all 2 different sizes.  That is what I like for a double ribbon bow.  But you could always choose 2 of the same size ribbon if you like that look too.

How To Make A Double Ribbon Bow For A Wreath

Even though I’ve been making these kinds of bows for years, they never turn out 100% perfect.  My loops are rarely the same length, but a lot of the mistakes can be hidden if you use the right kind of ribbon.  It also takes a lot of practice, so don’t give up if your first try isn’t perfect! 🙂  Thinner ribbon can be a little easier to handle too.

Only wanting to make a single ribbon bow?  You can get the tutorial along with printable instructions on the post How to Make a Big Bow for a Wreath .

Now that you know how to make a big bow, where are you going to put it?

Happy Crafting!

Here are some of the bows I’ve made in the past and how I’ve used them.

***Even though I’ve been making these kinds of bows for years, they never turn out 100% perfect.  My loops are rarely the same length, but a lot of the mistakes can be hidden if you use the right kind of ribbon.  It also takes a lot of practice, so don’t give up if your first try isn’t perfect!   Thinner ribbon can be a little easier to handle too.

Hi Liz! I love this bow making technique! Thank you for sharing. However, neither of the two ribbons I chose for my wreath have wire. Can you recommend something to use to stiffen my ribbon? I was thinking Modgepodge?? Thank you,

How to Make a Ribbon Bow - EASIEST Bow Tutorial

Sharing is caring!

Learn how to make a ribbon bow. Ribbon Bows look great on hair clips, DIY gift bags , clothing and all kinds of fun homemade presents. They are so fun and easy to make you will wonder why you didn't learn how to make them years ago!

How to Make a Ribbon Bow

  • How to Make a Ribbon Bow

I always find it relaxing to sit in front of the tv in the evenings and make hair clips with my glue gun. In making these samples to show you, it took longer for my glue gun to heat up than to make the actual bows. Don't worry if you don't have a glue gun. A simple needle and thread are all you really need to learn how to make a ribbon bow.

how to make a ribbon bow

How to Make a Ribbon Bow - SUPPLIES

Supplies you will need:

  • Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 7 inches (17.7cm) each.
  • 2 inches of ⅜ inch (10mm) wide ribbon for the center.
  • OPTIONAL - Hot glue gun. If you are joining these bows to hairclips it is easier to make them with a hot glue gun. If you will be joining your bows to clothing that needs to be washed, you should skip the glue gun and do all hand sewing.
  • NEEDLE - Hand sewing needle.
  • THREAD - I always like to use upholstery thread as you can pull it really hard and it won't snap.

How to Make a Ribbon Bow - Video

Here is a video I made for you showing how to make a ribbon bow . It is just a few minutes long, so please enjoy! Make sure you subscribe to my YouTube channel for weekly sewing and craft videos.

How to Make a Ribbon Bow - Instructions

Step 1 - overlap ends.

Take one of your wider 7 inch (38mm) pieces of ribbon and fold the ends in so they overlap in the middle by ¼ inch (6mm). Pin it in place.

ribbon-bow-step-1

Step 2 - Stitch Through Center

Thread your needle and knot the end. Make small running stitches through the center of the ribbon ensuring you catch in all layers. Don't cut your thread.

ribbon-bow-step-2

Step 3 - Pull Tight

Pull the thread tight and arrange the folds carefully with your fingers. Use the tail of the thread to wrap around the center of the bow a few times and pull really tight.

Knot off the thread at the back.

Step 4 - Repeat

Repeat the above steps for the second piece of wide ribbon. You now have 2 lovely looking bows!

ribbon-bow-step-3

Step 5 - Join the Bows

The next step in how to make a ribbon bow is to join the bows. Place one bow on top of the other bow aligning their centers. Use your thread and wrap it around the center of the two bows. Knot it off at the back.

Try and be accurate when winding the thread around the center as you will end up with a more symmetrical bow. If you are going to be joining your bow to clothing don't cut the thread yet. For hairclips or articles that don't need washing, you can cut the thread.

ribbon-bow-step-7

Step 6 - Glue The Center

Place your thin strip of ribbon for the center down on the table. If the ribbon has a one-sided pattern, then place it pattern side down.

Place your bow on top. Do a quick check and see if one side of your bow looks better than the other. Put the nicer side facing down.

ribbon-bow-step-4

Wrap the small ribbon tightly around the center of the bow. You want it to overlap by about ⅜ inch (1cm) at the back. Trim it a little shorter if necessary.

Then either stitch or glue the ends.

ribbon-bow-step-5

Turn your bow over and you are all ready to join it on to something like an alligator clip or a gift bag.

How to Make a Large Bow (Tutorial)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

I will start out this post by warning you that this post will be loaded with pictures, so it may take some time to load. But, I want to give you step-by-step instructions to make it even easier for you.

Ok! Let’s get started! The instructions will be posted above each picture.

Materials Needed:

Large Roll of Wired Ribbon (I used 2″ x 75′. This will make quite a few bows.) Florist Wire (Silver is best, all my Walmart had was green.) Wire Cutters (optional. Mine are also tweezers, and I use them to twist the wire tighter around the ribbon.)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

Instructions:

1. Decide how long you want the “tail” of your bow. (I always tend to make mine longer than I should – it’s easier to cut off more at the end than it is to start all over because it’s too short.)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

2. Make your first loop. (This will determine how big your bow is. The larger the loop, the larger the bow.) Pinch the ribbon together at the end of the loop.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

3. Make your second loop on the opposite side. Continue pinching the ribbon together in the middle.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

4. Continue until you have as many loops as you’d like. (For this bow, I wanted 8 loops.)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

5. Cut a long piece of wire, and then fold it in half for extra stability.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

6. Wrap the wire around the area you’ve been pinching all this time. (Use wire cutters/tweezers to get the wire twisted as tightly as possible.) Do NOT cut the excess wire. You’ll need it in a minute.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

7. To form the little center loop, use ribbon from the side of the ribbon you haven’t cut yet and make a small loop.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

8. Use the extra wire that’s still on the bow and wrap it through the smaller loop to secure the loop to the rest of the bow.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

9.  Secure with extra wire. (Optional: I do this if I know I will be putting the bow somewhere that it will be taking a lot of abuse – on an outdoor wreath, on a package, etc.)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

10. “Floof” the loops and shape them exactly how you want them.

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

11. Cut the second tail from the roll of ribbon at the same length as the first tail. Then, cut each tail at an angle as shown below to make an upside down V shape. Repeat for each side. (To ensure they are exactly the same, you can put both tails together and cut at the same time.)

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

Tada! You have a finished bow!

how to make a big bow with 2 ribbons

These bows can be used on just about anything… gifts, wreaths, doors, you name it. Tomorrow I’ll share a fun wreath project that needs a pretty bow like this.

You can easily make a bow in under 5 minutes. Now all my friends know my secret, and they know why I have so many bows all over my living room. 🙂

I’d love to see your finished bows if you use this tutorial!

How to Make a Bow the SUPER EASY Way

By Brooke Riley 10 Comments

Facebook

Ok guys. Let’s talk BOWS. Mainly, the SUPER easy way of how to make a bow. They can set off any gift or wreath or door hanger or literally ANYTHING. They add that little extra oomph to your project, but soooo many people have no idea how to make them. Guess what? That was ME not even 2 months ago. I had never made bows. I didn’t have a clue what to do. BUT, I knew the style I liked…and I worked around with it until I found a process that worked for me- and I tweaked it along the way until I had it just the way I wanted it.

I can’t tell you how to make those gorgeous loopy bows. I don’t know how. But, I CAN tell you how I make MY bows…and they are super duper easy.

Easy Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Make a Bow

I am basically going to just walk you through my process with pictures. I will actually do a video a little later and try to add it to this blog post too, for reference.

Get all of your ribbon together!

How to make a bow the SUPER DUPER easy way! This tutorial is literally so simple, and the bows are gorgeous!

1. start with a “base” for your ribbon bow.

I consider a base either some really thick ribbon of some sort that matches your theme or a very neutral burlap. 99% of the time, I use a neutral color, such as burlap. I lay 2 pieces down and crisscross them. It is up to you how long your ribbon should be, depending on how big you want your bow.

How to make a bow the SUPER DUPER easy way!

2. Cut strips of ribbon.

Cut strips of ribbon and continue this process until you feel like you have used as much ribbon as you desire!

How to make a bow the SUPER DUPER easy way! This tutorial is literally so simple, and the bows are gorgeous!

3. Layer your strips of ribbon.

Mix and match fun colors and designs. It is FUN to make a bow! I like to mix thick, thin, different designs, plain, etc… It gives your bow more fun layers.

How to make a bow the SUPER DUPER easy way! This tutorial is literally so simple, and the bows are gorgeous!

About This Article

Amy Guerrero

To make a basic bow with wired ribbon, cut a length of ribbon and find the center. Make 2 loops on either side of the center point, making sure that both loops are pointing up. Cross the loops over each other, then under each other to make a knot in the middle. Gently tug on the loops to tighten the knot. Keep pulling and tugging the loops and tail ends of the bow to adjust their size and shape. If you like, trim notches into the ends of the tails to make them look more elegant.
