Top 5 Best John Maxwell Books for Leaders

Who is john maxwell, 5 must-read leadership books by john maxwell, leadership isn’t a job title—it’s an act of service .

A survey conducted by Deloitte found “Leadership remains the No. 1 talent issue facing organizations around the world.” While 86 percent of surveyed respondents felt it was important, only 13 percent felt they did an excellent job in terms of leadership development. This research shows that clearly not enough people learn how to be a leader. One of the best resources for learning leadership are John Maxwell books.

His books, for which he is best known, are valuable resources for those wanting to maximize their influence and impact. Below, learn from one of the top mentors and executive coaches in the world by checking out five of Maxwell’s most powerful books on the art of leadership.

John Maxwell is a best-selling author, speaker, and business coach. Over the course of his career, he’s written over 100 books, which have sold 24 million copies. Alongside his books, he founded The John Maxwell Company, The John Maxwell Team, and EQUIP, a leadership training program. Altogether, he’s trained millions in the art of leadership around the world.

While John Maxwell offers many products and services, one of the best introductions to him is through his books. To learn more about how to become an effective leader, check out the book list below.

1. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

“What is a leader and how does leadership work?” The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership answers these two important questions. Since its publication in 1998, this book has sold over one million copies and is recognized as one of the most popular leadership books of all time. Through 21 different laws, it provides readers with a foundational understanding of leadership. Whether you’re new to leadership or looking for continued education, leadership expert John Maxwell’s leadership books guide you through important lessons he’s learned over the course of his 40-year career as a leader. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a powerful tool that teaches how to effectively lead others.

Best quotes from The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership :

  • “I believe the bottom line in leadership isn’t how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others. That is achieved by serving others and adding value to their lives.”
  • “If you can’t influence people, then they will not follow you. And if people won’t follow, you are not a leader. That’s the Law of Influence.”
  • “To lead any way other than by example, we send a fuzzy picture of leadership to others. If we work on improving ourselves first and make that our primary mission, then others are more likely to follow.”

2. The 5 Levels of Leadership

Leaders can’t accomplish their vision alone. They must have followers who believe in the company’s mission and want to be part of achieving it. In The 5 Levels of Leadership , John Maxwell describes how leaders gain and maintain a following. As he explains in this book, having the title of Leader is only the first step. There are five different levels in his leadership pyramid and Maxwell provides information on how to master each level. Reaching the top, Level 5: Pinnacle, isn’t easy. A person must spend their life investing, inspiring, and developing others. Their mission is multiplying leaders and amplifying their influence in a way that extends far beyond themselves. As a result, they develop a legacy that lives on, even after their time as a leader ends.

Best quotes from The 5 Levels of Leadership :

  • “Your values are the soul of your leadership, and they drive your behavior.”
  • “Good leadership isn’t about advancing yourself. It’s about advancing your team.”
  • “When you like people and treat them like individuals who have value, you begin to develop influence with them. You develop trust.”

3. Developing the Leader Within You

Developing the Leader Within You, released in 1993 , was John Maxwell’s first published book on leadership. It became a bestseller, selling more than one million copies. In 2018, he created a revised version, which includes insights from his nearly three more decades as a leader. This book is really about understanding that when you enter into a leadership role, the only way to be effective is to dedicate yourself to personal growth and service. He defines and explains leadership , leadership traits, and principles and practices of leaders. It’s an inspirational, yet practical book that helps leaders expand or fine-tune their leadership qualities .

Best quotes from Developing the Leader Within You :

  • “When the leader lacks confidence, the followers lack commitment.”
  • “A leader is great not because of his or her power, but because of his or her ability to empower others.”
  • “The boss drives his workers; the leader coaches them. The boss depends on authority; the leader on goodwill. The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm. The boss says ‘I’; the leader, ‘we.’ The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown. The boss knows how it is done; the leader shows how. The boss says, ‘Go’; the leader says, ‘Let’s go!’

4. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth

One common theme in all of John Maxwell’s books is that great leaders constantly pursue personal growth on behalf of those they serve. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth teaches readers the specific practices essential to growth in life. These principles help leaders align their passion and purpose with strategies for reaching their full potential. This book focuses on the importance of being intentional about growth, creating a plan for development, and putting strategies into action. It teaches the importance of consistency, dedication, resilience, and a real desire to make a change. While the material is easy to follow and pragmatic, Maxwell suggests spending one full week working through each chapter. This gives time to put what you’ve learned into practice before moving onto the next concept.

Best quotes from The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth :

  • “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
  • “Most people who decide to grow personally find their first mentors in the pages of books.”
  • “Comparing yourself to others is really just a needless distraction. The only one you should compare yourself to is you. Your mission is to become better today than you were yesterday. You do that by focusing on what you can do today to improve and grow.”

5. Developing the Leaders Around You

The last John Maxwell book on the list may be his best leadership book, Developing the Leaders Around You . A core component of his teaching is not only growing yourself but working to grow other leaders. Great CEOs, executives, and managers understand the importance of mentorship and the benefit of developing new leaders at every level within an organization. When you select the right hires who align with company values, invest in teaching and developing them, model leadership, and continue growing yourself as a leader, you multiply leaders. When you train successful people to lead, you trust them to help make decisions, problem solve , complete important objectives, and take on delegated work. Building more leaders across the board is key to experiencing greater success, freedom, and fulfillment in life.

Best quotes from Developing the Leaders Around You :

  • “Unless you want to carry the whole load yourself, you need to be developing leaders.”
  • “Spend 80 percent of your time on the most promising 20 percent of the potential leaders around you.”
  • “Followers tell you what you want to hear. Leaders tell you what you need to hear.”

All of John Maxwell’s resources center around the concept that leadership is not a title. As he’s famous for saying: “Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.” It’s a simple, yet precisely focused definition. What’s notable about his work is that he doesn’t just theorize about effective leadership. Instead, he actually equips successful people to grow their influence from a practical perspective. As a result, he’s influenced millions across the world and exhibited the power of servant leadership .

The type of leaders John Maxwell grows are the type of www.leaders.companies desperately need. For instance, the Human Resources Professionals Association found “63% of millennials feel their leadership skills are not being developed. As a result of this, 71% of those millennial employees want to leave their job within two years to remedy this deficiency.” With this statistic in mind, those who aren’t dedicated to expanding their influence have a 29 percent chance of retaining the largest percentage of their workforce. This is evidence that the cycle of learning and teaching leadership isn’t an option. It’s mandatory if you want to build a successful business.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership

"21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" by John Maxwell is a practical guide to 21 essential traits of successful leaders. With real-world examples, learn how to apply these laws to any situation and develop your own leadership skills.

Why do I love it?

One of the main reasons I found the book to be so impactful is because Maxwell makes it clear that leadership is not just for executives, managers, or CEOs. Rather, it is about influence, and anyone, regardless of their job title, can be a leader and have an impact on those around them.

This is a powerful concept that has helped me to understand the importance of my everyday interactions with others. Another important lesson I learned from the book is that leadership is a never-ending journey, not a destination. Maxwell's emphasis on continuous self-improvement and constant learning sets a high standard for anyone who aspires to be an effective leader.

Key Takeaways

One of the most important laws of leadership that the book highlights is the Law of the Lid. Basically, this means that your ability to lead determines how effective you are as a person, in both your personal and professional life. And the good news is that leadership skills can be developed and improved with practice.

Another important thing that the book emphasizes is the power of teamwork. No one is good at everything, so it's important to be around people who have different skills and perspectives. Plus, it's important to have a positive attitude and create a positive environment for the people around you. People are naturally drawn to leaders who are positive and inspiring.

But being a good leader also means having a clear plan for what you want to achieve. You need to have a mission for your organization and a solid plan to execute that mission. Being able to adapt to changes and make good decisions is also essential.

In short, the book teaches that being a good leader requires continuous learning, teamwork, positivity, and a clear plan. Anyone can become a great leader with the right mindset and effort!

The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth

"The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth" by John Maxwell is a practical and inspiring guide to personal development, offering actionable strategies and insights to help you unlock your potential and become the best version of yourself. It's the perfect read for anyone looking to take their personal growth to the next level.

This book has helped me to understand that growth doesn't just happen, it's intentional. It has also taught me that knowing yourself and your purpose is key to achieving growth and that we must learn to see ourselves in a healthy and positive way.

Maxwell's down-to-earth writing style and relatable examples make this book an enjoyable read that is easy to understand and apply to one's life. Anyone who is seeking guidance on personal growth and development will benefit from reading this book.

One key takeaway from the book is that growth doesn't just happen on its own. You need to have a plan and be intentional about your growth. Setting goals and having a clear plan in place can help you make progress toward achieving your goals.

Another important point is that knowing yourself is crucial for personal growth. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses can help you identify areas where you need to improve and work on developing those areas.

In addition, consistency is key when it comes to achieving success. Small daily actions can lead to significant results over time, so it's important to keep at it even when progress feels slow.

Finally, the people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on your growth. It's essential to surround yourself with positive and supportive people who can encourage and inspire you along the way.

The 5 Levels of Leadership

In this book, he helps readers identify the five levels of leadership and how one can progress from being just a positional leader to becoming a truly transformational leader.

Throughout the book, Maxwell uses personal experiences, examples, and principles of leadership to provide an eye-opening perspective on how anyone can become a leader, regardless of their position or background.

The book is written in a conversational and easy-to-understand style that makes it accessible to anyone, regardless of their background or level of leadership experience. Secondly, the book is packed with practical and actionable advice on how to become a more effective and successful leader.

The biggest thing I learned from this book is that I can't treat everyone the same and expect to get the same results. No two people are on the same level, so the key is to build a relationship with each individual from the beginning.

As I climbed the levels, I also realized it takes time and commitment to win each one, but the rewards are incredible once you get there.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that it's easier to go down the levels than to climb up, so we need to be careful. I also appreciated that the book emphasized the importance of being adaptable when we change positions or switch organizations. But most importantly, the book reminded me that leadership isn't a one-person show; it's a team effort. I can't climb the levels alone, but with the right team by my side, nothing is impossible!

This book breaks down leadership into five different levels, with each level building upon the previous one. The first level is "Position," where people follow you simply because of your job title or position. The second level is "Permission," where people follow you because they believe in you and your vision.

The third level is "Production," where people follow you because of the results you achieve. The fourth level is "People Development," where you focus on developing other leaders and the fifth level is "Pinnacle," where you become a respected leader who has a significant impact on others.

Developing the Leader Within You 2.0

"Developing the Leader Within You 2.0" is a practical guide to help readers become effective leaders. In this updated version of his book, John Maxwell shares strategies and insights to help you develop the skills needed to motivate, inspire, and build strong relationships with others to achieve your goals.

Maxwell draws on his wealth of experience as a leader to provide practical tips on decision-making, communication, and developing a personal brand, among other things. The book also includes new material on important leadership topics such as navigating change and dealing with challenging people.

As a content writer, I particularly love this book because it's easy to understand, and the principles outlined are practical and applicable in everyday life.

The book emphasizes the importance of having a positive attitude, effective communication skills, and building strong relationships that result in personal and professional success.

Maxwell also stresses that to become an effective leader, one needs to have a clear vision, define their priorities, and develop a plan of action. I particularly love the section on developing a personal growth plan, where the author encourages readers to be intentional about their learning, set goals for themselves, and seek mentorship and guidance from experts in their fields.

The 2.0 edition stands out due to the addition of two new chapters that offer updated perspectives on leadership principles. Maxwell also shares the leadership insights and practices he has learned over the years, providing you with all the knowledge you need to take your leadership skills to the next level.

The book's primary focus is on three essential themes: Influence, Character, and Service. You'll learn how to use the 5 Levels of Leadership as a roadmap to influence others, embrace good ethics, practice self-leadership, value people, and adopt a service-oriented mindset.

Leadershift

In this book, Maxwell inspires readers to shift their mindset and approach to leadership to adapt to the changing world around us. Through relatable examples and practical advice, Leadershift teaches readers how to become effective leaders who positively impact their personal lives, relationships, and careers.

Why do I Love it?

What sets this book apart is the way Maxwell explains that a lasting and meaningful leadership shift isn't just about changing what leaders do, but about who they are. One of my favorite chapters in Leadershift is "The Law of Intentionality."

Here, Maxwell emphasizes the importance of taking intentional actions to become a better version of oneself. He offers a practical and actionable roadmap toward personal growth and continuous improvement.

I also appreciate how Maxwell provides real-life examples from his own experiences as a leader to support his principles in the book.

the importance of being adaptable and flexible in leadership was really emphasized throughout the book, with Maxwell sharing his own experiences of the need to shift his approach to accommodate new situations. As a leader, it's important to be willing to learn and grow and to be open to changing direction if necessary.

Another key takeaway for me was the concept of "leadershifts", which are essentially the changes in mindset and approach that leaders need to make in order to stay ahead of the game. Maxwell outlines eleven shifts in particular that are crucial for success, such as the shift from focusing on maintaining to focusing on innovating. These shifts offer a valuable roadmap for anyone looking to improve their leadership skills and I found them to be really helpful.
