Guess These 26 Book Titles Written in Only Emoji

Emojis have overtaken my life in a big way. As much I like sending long wordy texts, I appreciate the understatement of my favorite emoticons. Your friend flakes again on your plans for drinks? Hit him with the judgmental face. Another friend complains about her lack of romantic prospects? Comfort her with the dancing twins with antennae doing little Rockette kicks, to say, We'll both be alone forever!
Emojis are idiosyncratic, to say the least. Why is there both a camel with one hump, and a camel with two humps? When will we get emojis with more diverse skin tones ? And when am I going to be able to send mermaids and witches to my friends?
The advent of Emoji has also given birth to my favorite game: Guess this book title. This level of nerdiness appeals to most of my friends (they're poets, OK?) and we can get weirdly obscure (cow, smiling poop, moon, lips, lollipop, buildings: "Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, duh" my friend replied immediately.) You won't find poetry on this quiz, however; it's a mix of classic novels and popular fiction.
So, are you ready? Start guessing, emoji master:

1. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway; 2. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen; 3. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston; 4. Ghost World by Daniel Clowes; 5. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee; 6. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne; 7. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad; 8. The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner; 9. No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy; 10. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess; 11. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote; 12. All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy; 13. Children of the Corn by Stephen King; 14. Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck; 15. The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann; 16. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; 17. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt; 18. There’s plenty of debate over what qualifies a book to be one of the “classic books.” People can be awfully stuffy about it, but luckily here at Book Riot, we like to think we’re pretty chill. I have a feeling Shakespeare would be down with the idea of emoji book titles, so here are sixteen titles translated to emoji speak for you to decipher. They say a picture is worth a thousand words — and in this case, a book title.
In celebration of World Book Day Thursday, UK-based elevator company Stannah put out a tweet challenging followers to identify 10 classic kid’s books by using emojis as clues.
“In celebration of #WorldBookDay, we’ve created a brainteasing #book emoji quiz,” tweeted the stairlift and home lift company. “Our #SilverCensus study saw us ask more than 1,000 over-60s which stories they feel all children should read … and these sequences represent the top 10 answers.”
How many of these classic children’s books can you name? Apparently, most only get six out of 10 answers correct. Put your emoji literacy and book knowledge to the test by solving the riddles below!

Now that you’ve finished guessing, check your answers below!
WARNING: Spoilers
- Winnie-the-Pooh
- The Railway Children
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
- The Tale of Peter Rabbit
- The Famous Five
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
- The Wind in the Willows
- The Jungle Book
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Stannah’s tweet comes amid uproar from Gen Z about the nature of emojis and their apparent misuses.
One Reddit user caused an online firestorm after demanding that the thumbs-up emoji and nine other emojis be canceled for being too passive-aggressive to use in an office setting.
“For younger people, the thumbs-up emoji is used to be really passive-aggressive,” wrote the user.
“It’s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up,” they added. “So I also had a weird time adjusting because my workplace is the same.”

Guess the Book Titles Using Only Emoji

Thinky face, thought bubble, book

I tell people that I got a degree in English Literature so I would secure a high paying job at a literary non-profit with an unlimited salad bar, rosé on tap, and a personal chauffeur, but the real reason for my four (very expensive) years in university was to hone my bar trivia skills so I’m acing the book questions and bringing glory to my team (Team Billy, named after my dog, Billy the dog).
I’ve combined my love for bar trivia, my knowledge of literature, and a millennial penchant for communicating solely in emojis to present to you my life’s work: a “Guess the Book Titles Using Only Emoji” quiz. Can’t figure it out? No worries, you’re only a little bit of a doofus and I’m only judging you a a teeny bit for sneaking a peek at the answers listed at the bottom.
