What Is a Case Study?
When you’re performing research as part of your job or for a school assignment, you’ll probably come across case studies that help you to learn more about the topic at hand. But what is a case study and why are they helpful? Read on to learn all about case studies.
Deep Dive into a Topic
At face value, a case study is a deep dive into a topic. Case studies can be found in many fields, particularly across the social sciences and medicine. When you conduct a case study, you create a body of research based on an inquiry and related data from analysis of a group, individual or controlled research environment.
As a researcher, you can benefit from the analysis of case studies similar to inquiries you’re currently studying. Researchers often rely on case studies to answer questions that basic information and standard diagnostics cannot address.
Study a Pattern
One of the main objectives of a case study is to find a pattern that answers whatever the initial inquiry seeks to find. This might be a question about why college students are prone to certain eating habits or what mental health problems afflict house fire survivors. The researcher then collects data, either through observation or data research, and starts connecting the dots to find underlying behaviors or impacts of the sample group’s behavior.
During the study period, the researcher gathers evidence to back the observed patterns and future claims that’ll be derived from the data. Since case studies are usually presented in the professional environment, it’s not enough to simply have a theory and observational notes to back up a claim. Instead, the researcher must provide evidence to support the body of study and the resulting conclusions.
As the study progresses, the researcher develops a solid case to present to peers or a governing body. Case study presentation is important because it legitimizes the body of research and opens the findings to a broader analysis that may end up drawing a conclusion that’s more true to the data than what one or two researchers might establish. The presentation might be formal or casual, depending on the case study itself.
Once the body of research is established, it’s time to draw conclusions from the case study. As with all social sciences studies, conclusions from one researcher shouldn’t necessarily be taken as gospel, but they’re helpful for advancing the body of knowledge in a given field. For that purpose, they’re an invaluable way of gathering new material and presenting ideas that others in the field can learn from and expand upon.

Texas Instruments and E-Lab E-Lab, LLC is a business research and design firm in Chicago that specializes in observing people, identifying patterns in behavior, and developing an understanding of why these patterns exist. The company then uses the knowledge that it gains as a framework in the product development process. Texas Instruments (TI) used E-Lab to investigate the mobility, connectivity, and communications needs of law enforcement officers, which led to ideas for a set of computing and communications products. As part of its product development research, TI?s Advanced Integrated Systems Department and E-Lab researchers spent 320 hours shadowing police officers in three Texas police departments. Shadowing involves asking questions while observing. Researchers walked foot patrols, rode in patrol cars, and pedalled with bike patrols. They spent time with crowd control, narcotics, homicide, dispatch, and juvenile teams. They recorded their observations and interviews on paper, digital camera, and video. A number of interesting findings emerged from all this research. First, police officers are very social, so it was important that any product TI developed should enhance socialization rather than detract from it. For example, an in-car computing and communications device should be able to access a database that lists names and numbers of experts on the force so officers can call or e-mail the experts directly. Second, police officers are not driven by procedure. That told TI that the procedures for an investigation should reside in the device and that the device should prompt the officer at each step in the process. Third, officers rely on informal information about people and activities on their beats. This information may be kept on scraps of paper, on a spreadsheet back in the office, or in the police officer?s head. Facts of the case: Smiley, a buyer from Carrefour Fashions, entered the store of a rival firm, Boulevard Boutique. The reason for his visit was to find out about the latest lines that Boulevard was carrying. Once Smiley entered the store he was recognized by Maldini, the store manager of Boulevard, who immediately called the store detective and told him to keep an eye on Smiley. Maldini then called the police, notifying them that he had a shoplifter in the store. Smiley never tried to leave, believing that Rocco, the store detective, would not permit him to do so. Once the police took Smiley to the station he explained the situation and was released.

Introduction J. J. is a 12-year-old, independent, type 1 diabetic; diagnosed at 5-years-old. Her experience of being diagnosed was a difficult and almost fatal one. It all started when J. J. got a bad ear infection and had an accident, which was extremely abnormal for her. The doctor put her on amoxicillin, and a week later she came down with a rash. J. J.’s mother brought her the doctor, and he thought it was mono. They did a mono test and the results came back negative, however, the doctor was sure it was mono. He told J. J.’s mother to stop giving her the amoxicillin and that the symptoms would subside. They stopped taking the antibiotic, however, J. J. symptoms got worse. She was frequently thirsty, using the restroom often, sleeping a lot, and would complain of stomach pain. J. J.’s mother said, “my ex and I would ask if the doctors were going to test her blood. None of the doctors did” (personal communication, October 26th, 2016). J. J. went to 4 different doctors before she was in some much pain that she couldn’t move and was throwing up; later that day, she was diagnosed in the Ellensburg’s Emergency Room. J. J.’s mother stated, “the ER doctor walk into the room and immediately said she diabetes, and needs to go to children’s now. The doctor said she could smell the ketones on J. I believe that when employees are engaged and have bought into the vision, they will work better which will reflect in care provisions. This will in turn affect patient satisfaction; however, there may also be some environmental issues that were disclosed in the survey which will need to be addressed as well. Declining culture of safety has to be looked at to determine if the decline is in personal safety or an issue within the environment which will also need to be addressed. The bible says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs3:5-6). After weighting my options between the offer made by the company in Texas and my current business deal, I have decide that it is best for me to discontinue doing business with Marshall. It saddens me to make this decision, but I believe Marshall and I have two different agendas. I have been nothing less than loyal, caring and compassionate when it comes to him and our business relationship. Marshall has been late numerous of times and I refrained from charging him late fees or penalties. He completely disregards the 30 day invoice payment and pays between 45 and 60 days. This act alone should have been a red flag for me, but I gave him the benefit of doubt. Not only does he violates the invoice, but he has broken my level of trust with him. Marshall had my son, a minor at the time, sign a contract behind my back with no intentions on informing me. How can I continue doing business with him if he isn’t trustworthy? Now I’m beginning to question his motive and his character after displaying this type of behavior.
