The University College for the Creative Arts is a specialised public university for arts and design located in the United Kingdom.
It was initially established in 2004 and attained university status in 2008.
It offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in a wide range of subjects ranging from fine art, animation, business, music and photography. It offers these courses through its seven academic schools namely: the Canterbury School of Architecture; crafts and design; fashion; film, media and performing arts; fine art, photography and visual communication, further education and the Business School for the Creative Industries.
The university has a number of centres such as the Animation Research Centre, Centre for Digital Scholarship, Crafts Study Centre and several other research clusters to further its academic research.
The university also has a wide range of academic collaborations with institutions across the world such as the London School of Marketing and Design and the MIT School of Design among others.
Students and staff have the opportunity to study and work abroad. It has partnerships with leading industry experts and corporations too.
The University College of Creative Arts is the second largest provider of creative arts education in the UK and has four campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, and Rochester.

Their vibrant campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, and Farnham are each home to a different set of specialist subjects. And thanks to partnerships with Maidstone Television Studios and the Institute of Creativity and Innovation in Xiamen, China, there are even more focused creative routes available to choose from.
Courses will a large practical component, with teaching delivered through hands-on workshops, thought-provoking seminars and lectures, and supportive tutorials. Depending on students’ chosen course, they could be assessed through independent project work, practical research, digital assignments, presentations or industry-style briefs.
Many courses encourage students to complete work experience within their chosen creative industry, as well as offering a chance to study abroad for a year. With all of this available, as well as the ability to work collaboratively on projects with other creative courses, UCA has everything to help students prepare for life after their qualification.

Entry requirements differ depending on the course and study mode that students are applying for. Prospective students can find the specific entry requirements for their chosen course on the university website, or they can contact the UCA Admissions Team to ask any questions they may have.
For certain courses, students may be required to attend an interview or audition or demonstrate experience in a relevant field. Some courses may also require submission of a portfolio or body of work for consideration. Full details are provided on each course’s page on the university website, so that students know what to expect when they apply.
International students may be asked to provide evidence of a basic level of English-language proficiency before the start of the course, as all courses at UCA are taught and assessed in English.

Halls of residence accommodation options are offered to first year students at UCA’s campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, and Farnham. Housing consists of shared apartments, with a communal living and kitchen area.
All first-year students who apply before the January UCAS deadline are guaranteed placement by the university in either halls of residence or private accommodation, so that they can focus on preparing for their life at university without the worry of securing an accommodation contract
Second and third-year students can find accommodation from the local private rental sector. The university’s dedicated accommodation office is always on-hand to give advice around finding accommodation in the local area, help identifying reputable landlords, and guidance on how to handle any problems that may arise.
UCA’s campuses have dedicated creative and technical facilities tailored to each of their specialist subject areas. Students are not just restricted to those of the discipline they study - students at UCA can use all the creative workshops on campus to support their studies with help on-hand from a friendly team of technicians.

The dedicated support staff within UCA’s Student Services department ensure that every student has someone to go to in times of need. This team is there to help, advise and guide students through numerous aspects of the university experience, and can refer individuals to specialist support services where required.
There are student support teams at all campuses, who offer services including free and confidential counselling, academic guidance, accommodation advice, financial services, disability support, and health and wellbeing support.
Students are actively encouraged to contact the support services as they require them and can either visit in person or get in touch via email or phone, if that is more comfortable. The services teams are there to allow students to remove unwanted distractions and help them focus on their primary goal of achieving a quality education.

Clubs and societies.
The UCA Students’ Union ( UCASU ) is an organisation run by elected student members. The union works hard to represent the university community, as well as co-ordinating a timetable of events and activities throughout the academic year. With a lively social calendar and an on-site venue, UCA students can look forward to freshers’ events, workshop activities, quiz nights, social meetups, and much more.
The Students’ Union team are a friendly and approachable first point of contact for any student who needs advice, guidance, or someone to talk with about a range of topics, from academic issues to personal support, accommodation advice, leadership opportunities, and even funding for creative projects. Alongside this, the SU is responsible for the running and administration of the clubs and societies open to students.
Social and recreational life is a large part of the university experience, and UCA has an active community of clubs, societies and communities which bring plenty of opportunities for new and returning students to try something new.
Students can learn a new skill, meet with others who share cultural or other interests, or develop an existing hobby, all while socialising with like-minded individuals and building friendships which often last a lifetime.
There is a wide range of sports clubs and special interest societies to choose from. The university offers everything from rugby to photography, football to life drawing, anime to creative writing. The university offers a programme of scholarships and bursaries to ensure the financial stability of all students, and to give motivated and hardworking students an opportunity to subsidise the cost of study. Undergraduate students may be eligible for one of the many scholarships on offer and are encouraged to check online for full details.
These bursaries are awarded for a variety of criteria, including levelling the playing field for students applying from a poorer financial background, and those that reward and encourage gifted students to apply. Students are encouraged to consider their application carefully as there is often competition for awards.
Tuition fees for students applying to UCA will vary depending on their country of residence and whether they are applying for a full-time or part-time course.
As an illustrative example, UK undergraduate students will pay £9,250 per academic year in tuition fees, while international students will pay £15,540. These fees are accurate for 2022/23 but may rise in future.
To help students afford their university education, those from the UK and EU can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the costs. This loan only becomes repayable once the student has reached a minimum salary level when they are employed in future, with repayments calculated as a percentage of the money earned above that threshold.

Our admission process: an overview
A joint admission committee consisting of both the Office of Admission and the School of Architecture evaluates the qualifications of architecture applicants. The undergraduate application to the School of Architecture is a two-part process:
Apply to the university through the Office of Undergraduate Admission using the Common Application. The university's admission office receives and evaluates all materials submitted as part of the Common Application to Carnegie Mellon University and the School of Architecture. University admission requirements can be found on the Office of Admission website .
Continue your application to the School of Architecture by submitting the Architecture Portfolio using SlideRoom .
The School of Architecture admission committee will review your portfolio submission along with the application materials already received and evaluated by the Office of Admission committee.
How to Apply
Before beginning your application, please be sure to visit the Office of Admission website to review the requirements requirements for undergraduate admission to the School of Architecture. The following steps are required for all B.Arch, B.A., and BXA applicants:
Start by beginning the Common Application. Identify Carnegie Mellon University as one of "My Colleges." Once you indicate that you are applying to CMU, you will automatically be directed to additional CMU-specific questions. This is also where you will indicate the School of Architecture as the undergraduate program to which you are applying by selecting: a) College - "College of Fine Arts" and b) Department/School - "School of Architecture."
Log into the School of Architecture SlideRoom portal to work on your portfolio submission. The Architecture Portfolio consists of the completion of two forms and the submission of ten different creative works submitted to the architecture portfolio portal of SlideRoom .
Register to participate in an online formal review of your portfolio submission to SlideRoom. Online formal reviews are not required of Architecture applicants, but they are strongly recommended.
You may track your Carnegie Mellon Application status online through the Office of Undergraduate Admission's Where Am I In the Process website or by contacting their office .
Completing the Architecture Portfolio
As a School of Architecture applicant, you must submit the Architecture Portfolio to be considered for admission. The Architecture Portfolio requires you to complete two forms and upload ten different creative works to your account in the architecture undergraduate admission portal of SlideRoom. Regular Decision and Transfer applicants must submit their portfolios to SlideRoom by January 9 ( November 1 for Early Decision I ). Only portfolios submitted to SlideRoom will be reviewed; physical portfolios will not be accepted.
Preparing Your Architecture Portfolio
In your portfolio, we seek evidence of your curiosity, critical thinking, innovation, problem solving, spatial reasoning/visual thinking, ability to synthesize, and desire to make and build things. The quality of the portfolio’s overall composition is as important as the quality of any individual piece. You should carefully curate and arrange your portfolio to tell a compelling story about yourself, your abilities and passions, and your commitment and motivation to study architecture.
How can you best present your abilities, interests, and passions through your creative work?
Select projects that demonstrate a range of media, 2- and 3-D relationships, and a variety of subject matter while still emphasizing your strongest work.
Collaborative work that you have created with others is encouraged. You must indicate in the field information in SlideRoom that a work is “Collaborative” and list the names of each individual involved. Most importantly, describe your individual role in completing that work.
Our undergraduate SlideRoom portal accepts image (JPG) and video files. We do not accept PDF files.
A layout spread of multiple images compromises the ability for us to view your work. We prefer one image per slide. If you want to compose multiple images of one work on one slide, then we ask that you compose a layout of no more than 3 images saved as a JPG file.
It is helpful to include a brief detailed description of the context for this work in the "Description" field in SlideRoom.
We discourage applicants from submitting technical drafting.
Submitting Your Architecture Portfolio
Access and log into the School of Architecture SlideRoom portal . Complete the supporting form questions, record a simple introductory video of yourself, and upload images of your creative work using the fields provided in the software to provide detailed information about your work. Once you are satisfied with your portfolio application, submit your portfolio to SlideRoom.
Portfolio Review: Discussing Your Portfolio Submission with Faculty
After you have submitted your application to Carnegie Mellon, you can register for an online formal review of your Architecture Portfolio submission to SlideRoom. An online formal portfolio review is an opportunity for you to learn more about our school, engage with current students, and meet with a member of our faculty for a 15-minute interview in the context of your previously submitted portfolio.
Portfolio review sessions are scheduled on specific dates and are held remotely on Zoom so you must register in advance. Registration is limited will open in mid-October for Early Decision applicants and early December for Regular Decision applicants ; register as soon as you have submitted your architecture application to Carnegie Mellon. Online formal portfolio reviews are not required of Architecture applicants, but they are strongly recommended.

BXA Intercollege Degrees
BXA Intercollege Degrees are four-year interdisciplinary degree programs between a concentration within the College of Fine Arts and another college at CMU. Admission evaluation by the School of Architecture is a requirement for students applying for a BXA Intercollege Degree Program blending architecture and one of the disciplines outlined above. To be offered admission to one of the BXA Intercollege Degree Programs with an interest in architecture, you must complete complete the admission requirements and be offered admission to both the School of Architecture and the other college represented by the "X": Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences (H), the Mellon College of Science (S), Computer Science (CS), or the College of Engineering (ES). Therefore, BXA applicants with an interest in Architecture MUST submit the architecture portfolio to Carnegie Mellon University as part of their application to be evaluated by the School of Architecture for admission consideration.
Undergraduate students who transfer into the School of Architecture are classified as first-year students and will begin in the fall semester of the first year of the undergraduate program. At the end of the second year, they will choose to pursue either of the following degrees:
Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) : five-year, NAAB-accredited undergraduate professional architecture degree.
Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A.) : four-year, pre-professional undergraduate architecture degree.
The curricula of these two degree programs parallel in the first two years with students taking classes predominately in architecture and selecting their degree program in the second year. Our B.Arch curriculum is unique to our school’s NAAB-accredited degree program and consists of a specific sequence of co-requisite and pre-requisite coursework. It doesn't readily correlate with curricula from other NAAB-accredited architecture programs. As a result, the B.Arch is a set five-year program ; there is no way to accelerate the program.
Previous college coursework for transfer credit is not evaluated as part of the admission process. Coursework for transfer credit is evaluated with the undergraduate Senior Academic Advisor once a student is enrolled and begins academic coursework in our program.
Transfer Application Requirements
Transfer applicants to the School of Architecture are required to meet first-year undergraduate application deadlines for admission consideration. The School of Architecture requires Transfer applicants to:
Complete the Common Application for Transfer through the university's Office of Admission by January 3, 2024 ;
Submit their School of Architecture transfer applicant portfolio to SlideRoom by January 9, 2024 ; and
Conduct a Transfer Interview with the School of Architecture undergraduate admission committee in mid-February .
Transfer applicants will be contacted by the School of Architecture’s Director of Recruitment & Enrollment, Alexis McCune Secosky, in early February to schedule their Transfer Interview. Interviews are conducted in a remote format via Zoom.
Transfer applicants have the option to participate in an Architecture Portfolio Review. Those who are able to register for a review will receive their Transfer Interview at the time of their scheduled session. Transfer applicants who do not register for a review will be contacted in early February to schedule their interview.

U of Regina students in creative technologies and design programs have new degree, diploma options
Creative technologies and design program offers 2-year diploma and 4-year degree.
The University of Regina announced Friday that students in the expanded creative technologies and design programs will now have the opportunity to explore new degree and diploma options.
"Creative technologies and design is ideal for students who really have an interest in sort of the connections between art, design, technology and culture," said Charity Marsh, a media professor and coordinator for the program.
"You can be practice-based in your study and you can think theoretically about it. You learn to think about technology and the arts in new ways."
The diploma in creative technologies is a two-year program offered through the faculty of media, art and performance. Courses completed from the diploma can also go toward receiving a creative technologies and design degree, which is a four-year program.
The program's aim is to help students develop technical skills across a variety of formats that are adapting amid technological changes. The faculty prides itself on its small class sizes and hands-on projects that students can work on collaboratively.
Art and technology
Students will dabble in a range of platforms including virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D animation, robotics, digital storytelling, AI and computer game design.
"VR is certainly about education and learning and we know that we see virtual reality being used, for example, in medical and health studies," said Marsh.
"Students from all different areas come together and they learn to sort of talk across the disciplinary languages. They learn to talk to each other and build and make together and they push each other, right, in different kinds of ways that are really important for the learning process."
The University of Regina was the first university in Canada to originally launch a creative technologies program. The new degree programs are unique in Saskatchewan and across the Prairie provinces.
"It's a really exciting time for students to be in creative technologies and design at the University of Regina. We are just taking on all of these new technologies and even old technologies and just being innovative and curious and experimenting and really being playful," Marsh said.

David Dick, dean of the faculty of media, art and performance, says the addition of the program will open many doors for future careers.
"Our students are serious about gaining skills as artists, developers, designers, scientists, theorists, entrepreneurs and practice-based scholars," Dick said in a news release issued Friday.
"They learn to think about technology and the arts in new ways, and thrive in the exploration of digital culture."
The creative technologies program is interdisciplinary, meaning it is open not only to MAP students, but to those in other areas of study too, such as students in computer science, engineering and arts.
"Students explore digital culture while working in and with interactive media and installation," said Marsh.

Transforming Creativity Into Compassion
Abbey Niedermier, a creative advertising senior, works as a social media and communications intern for UnCovered Beauty . She built the nonprofit’s Instagram, updated the website, but most importantly, worked toward a cause close to her heart and used her creativity for good—something she desires to do in every role she assumes.
UnCovered Beauty is a Lansing nonprofit offering accessible self-care, confidence coaching and marketing consulting services to bald women and those experiencing hair loss. Niedermier said its central mission is making clients feel beautiful.
“A lot is left unsaid about hair loss,” Niedermier said. “People feel very bothered by hair loss, especially when it’s alopecia, because people assume that they’re sick or they have cancer. The case for a lot of women is this feeling of disconnectedness and feeling very different.”
To highlight clients, one of Niedermier’s latest projects was creating a calendar showcasing these women and sharing their personal journeys.
“This was my favorite project I’ve worked on so far because I got to talk to these women and share their stories,” she said. “It’s been very well received, which is amazing. It also helps fundraise for the nonprofit so it can offer more services.”
Though ample strategy and planning is necessary for Niedermier’s job, landing the position came about through chance.
“It’s funny, because my roommate was on a plane to L.A.,” she said. “And the founder of the nonprofit, Nikita, was sitting next to her and (my roommate) mentioned that I’m in advertising and I would love to work for nonprofits and use my writing and creativity for good. It kind of fell into my lap; I didn’t really search for it.”
Niedermier also has a keen understanding and relationship to the organization’s goals.
“I have a very personal connection to hair loss,” she said. “My mom went through breast cancer when I was young, and I saw her lose her hair and how that affected her livelihood and confidence in herself. She really didn’t want to leave the house without a scarf. It was really a coincidence that this came to me, but I’m so grateful that this is how it came.”
Niedermier’s time at UnCovered Beauty certainly gave her the necessary soft skills to pursue her creative advertising career path, but also laid the foundation for her to dive into her true passion: utilizing her talents to help others.
“I want to use my copywriting skills for good and ideally work for a larger nonprofit or for an organization or agency that focuses on public health and any intersection between organizations that help humanity,” she said. “I would be happy in any organization that allows me to highlight other voices in an accessible and impactful way.”

R. Stranger MFA’24 combines creative writing and visual arts in their multimedia approach to art

R. Stranger MFA’24 incorporates visual work into their writing, striving to find their own personal channel of creating. Through PNCA’s Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing program, Stranger has been able to pursue cross-genre, collaborative work, combining prose, poetry, photography, film, archiving, and cataloging. “I needed to be in a writing program situated within an art school, where I would have the ability and freedom to incorporate my visual work and embodied practice into my creative writing,” Stranger says. “Literature and art have been the portals through which I receive so much of the world.”
The program’s unique approach to treating writing as a multidisciplinary studio art practice offers Stranger the ability to build relationships across departments. Stranger is especially grateful for mentorship from faculty members Vi Khi Nao , a writer, and Dao Strom , an artist. “Each of them has undeniably affected my work and approach to writing and creating,” Stranger says, adding that Nao “opened my eyes to the depth of emotion we can allow ourselves to go and the necessary risks that an artist must take if they wish to be true to their work and themselves.
Stranger focuses on difficult issues in their art, including “the multidimensional nature of queerness, the complexities of having/being a body, and the transformative nature of grief,” Stranger says. Utilizing several mediums allows Stranger to “move through the work of mourning and living through different layers of humanness.”
PNCA and the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies have granted Stranger multiple opportunities to share and show their work. “I tabled my zines at the 2022 Do-It-Yourself / Do-It-Ourselves Graduate Symposium as well as at this year’s Form.a Art Press Fair at Oregon Contemporary,” Stranger says. Their photography was also selected for display at Lightbox Photographic Gallery’s New Visionaries exhibit through an Oregon BFA/MFA photo student exhibition call organized by PNCA faculty Rachel Wolf .
The proverbial cherry on top of Stranger’s experience at PNCA has been having a private studio within an institutional space, thanks to Strom and Creative Writing Program Director Jay Ponteri . “I can still be in the world while also receiving access to a nurturing art community and the institutional resources that aid my public art practice.”

Creative approach to maths wins DARE Art Prize
Keisha Thompson has been awarded this year’s DARE Art Prize for taking an innovative, playful look at mathematics to make the subject less intimidating.
The fifth annual DARE Art Prize was presented to Keisha, a Manchester-based writer, performer, producer and maths educator, during a special ceremony at Kino, Opera North’s restaurant in the heart of Leeds.
The £15,000 commission is part of the pioneering DARE partnership between the University of Leeds and Opera North , in association with the National Science and Media Museum and The Tetley, Leeds. The prize challenges artists and scientists to collaborate on new approaches to the creative process.

Keisha’s project DeCipher uses creativity to place mathematics at the heart of everyday life, ‘deciphering’ what many people perceive to be a difficult topic to make it more accessible to everyone.
Recognising that mathematical knowledge around topics like coding and economics gives individuals an advantage in society, Keisha is looking to create an interactive performance piece which delves into the power dynamics attached to the subject.
Keisha Thompson , winner of the DARE Art Prize 2023-4, said: “Mathematics has always been a creative subject for me. I was introduced to it via puzzles and games before I got to school. When I got in the classroom, it was like meeting an old friend. However, as I moved through the education system, I found that I was in the minority in this experience. I want to use my skill, experience and enthusiasm to create engagements and outputs that support a new cultural appreciation for mathematics.”
In the piece, she will explore the question of how engaging with mathematics can potentially be used by people to reclaim agency and creativity. Her work also acknowledges that the history of mathematics needs to be ‘decolonised’ with Asian and African voices having effectively been forgotten in the classroom.
Keisha first began working on the DeCipher project last year, as an Artist Researcher with Esplanade Theatre (Singapore). She also recently received a T.S. Elliot residency at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, appointed by Poet Laureate and Professor of Poetry at Leeds, Simon Armitage.
Wieke Eringa, Director of the Cultural Institute at the University of Leeds, said: “The DARE Art Prize is a perfect example of how the University supports interdisciplinary research collaborations that drive positive change. When artists and scientists work together in this way, they can act as an engine for innovation with huge potential.
“Keisha Thompson's DeCipher wonderfully exemplifies this collaborative approach, creatively exploring the world of mathematics. We look forward to supporting the next stage of Keisha's work as part of our acclaimed partnership with Opera North.”
Becky Smith, Head of Academic Partnerships at Opera North, said: “The Prize entries this year were of an incredibly high calibre, with artists working in a wide range of media and looking to collaborate with scientists in all areas of research. Keisha’s DeCipher project really stood out to us however, as a much-needed opportunity to interrogate mathematical pedagogy, using creativity to engage more people with what can be perceived as an intimidating subject.
“What the DARE Art Prize does is give the winning artist freedom and time, alongside access to the incredible academic staff at the University of Leeds and the artists within Opera North. We’re really looking forward to seeing what emerges during Keisha’s time with us.”
Bryony Bond, Director of The Tetley, Leeds, said: “The Tetley’s involvement in the Prize came about because we were interested in how to make artists’ research public, and to allow members of the public to see their work as it was emerging.
“What the DARE Art Prize does is to bring to life often quite complicated scientific concepts and find new routes into thinking about some of the most difficult ideas of our time. We’re delighted to be a partner on the initiative once again.”
The four past Prize winners have each interacted with the work of the University and the Leeds-based opera company in illuminating ways, from working with infrasound, climatology, the environment and the paranormal, to exploring AI and insect biodiversity.
Last year’s recipient, Essex-based sculptor Katie Surridge, worked with teams at the University to address the problem of e-waste and the valuable resources, including gold, silver, copper, platinum, aluminium and cobalt, that are present in discarded electronic devices. Katie used these to produce new sculptures, redefining perceptions around what is considered redundant and worthless.
Keisha will begin her collaboration with Opera North and partner institutions this term with the project developing over the course of the coming year.
