SRUC’s courses consider the innovative science that supports land-based and rural industries, the way they interact with and support the environment around them, and the businesses that rely on them – from agriculture to veterinary nursing, and a huge variety of topics in between.

SRUC’s strength lies in the integration of the education, research and consulting areas of their business. As a student at SRUC, particularly at degree level, you will be taught by a team which, depending on your course, may include lecturers, instructors, researchers, vets, and consultants, as well as speakers from industry. Knowledge exchange is at the heart of SRUC – passing on experience, industry insight, expertise, and ensuring the commercial environment and the practical application of theory is part of the classroom.

It’s not all just sitting in a classroom

Alongside traditional lectures, there may be guest speakers and practical classes, and depending on your course, laboratory work. You will also participate in seminars and tutorials, group presentations, projects and written assignments. Learning isn’t confined to the classroom – whatever your course, you’ll find that study tours, field trips and real-life case studies all feature. SRUC's smaller teaching groups also mean that they are able to arrange regular visits to relevant industry locations to meet with experts working in your field.

Employability

University guide 2013: Scottish Agricultural College

The Scottish Agricultural College is Scotland's land-based higher education institution, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses that focus on the rural economy and environment, including subjects such as agriculture, business, animal science, environment, green technology, conservation, horticulture, outdoor pursuits and tourism. Its three campuses are in Aberdeen, Ayr and Edinburgh. Ayr is a new-build developed in partnership with the University of West of Scotland Ayr. The Edinburgh campus is co-located with the University of Edinburgh at King's buildings, while the Aberdeen campus is set in its own estate to the north of the city. The college has research farms and conservation areas located across Scotland.

Fees Scottish-domiciled students in higher education for the first time pay no fees. Students from the rest of the UK will pay £6,750 in 2012-13.

Bursaries Scottish students benefit from a range of support from the Scottish executive – and SAC has a limited means-tested Centenary bursary available. A means-tested fees-support bursary has been set up for students from the rest of the UK. SAC is funding this with 20% of all Rest of UK fees generated. It also has up to three honours-year bursaries available to successful participants in the SAC trust traineeship scheme.

Accommodation In Aberdeen and Ayr, there are self-catering en-suite halls of residence. Costs are between £90 and £110 a week. Aberdeen also has shared accommodation in cottages on campus. Edinburgh is a city geared up for students and there are numerous private halls of residence across the city.

Facilities SAC has farms distributed around Scotland with a comprehensive range of farming activities represented including organic, livestock, arable and dairy. Science courses at SAC are supported by modern, well-equipped teaching laboratories, and each campus has its own library. Students also have a virtual learning environment, which hosts learning resources.

The Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) was formed in 1990 through the merger of three other institutions:

• Agricultural College of the East of Scotland (1901)
• Agricultural College of Aberdeen and the North of Scotland (1904)
• Agricultural College of West Scotland (1899).

It was the largest institution of its kind in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. SAC has also provided consulting services throughout Scotland in addition to its portfolio of traditional teaching and research methods. In October 2012, Scottish Agricultural College was merged with Baroni College, Elmwood College and Oatridge College to form Scotland's Rural College.

SRUC integrates comprehensive skills building, education and business support for the Scottish agricultural industries.

SRUC provides access to a variety of housing options available to students, both on and off campus. This includes dorms on the Craibstone, Elmwood, Oatridge, and Barony campuses.

• Self-catering residential apartments are currently available at Sutton Hall, Hunter Hall and Mackie Hall at Craibstone Estate. There is a large parking lot on site.
• Sutton Hall is a main dorm with 60 en suite rooms (with shower). 8 double rooms and 3 rooms on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible.
• Hunter Hall has 17 standard single rooms, each with a washbasin; apartment with 3 small standard single bedrooms. The Craibstone Bar is located in the Hunter's Hall, as well as a TV and billiard room.
• Mackie Hall has 18 standard single rooms, each with a washbasin. This room is only for guests under the age of 18 .. Large common room, cafeteria, shops, all bedrooms have Wi-Fi, each dorm has a kitchen / dining room. Residents can use the laundry services, including washing machines, tumble dryers, ironing boards, irons.

• SRUC King's Buildings is located on the University of Edinburgh campus on the south side of the city + has premises located on the Bush estate.
• SRUC Riverside is located on a state-of-the-art riverside campus right in the center of Ayr.
• The SRUC Barony is set on a 260-hectare estate in the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway in the southwest of Scotland.
• SRUC Craibstone Estate is located on Craibstone Estate, approximately 5 miles from the center of Aberdeen, Scotland's third largest city.
• The SRUC Elmwood is located in Northeast Fife, just 14.5 km from St Andrews.
• SRUC Oatridge is located on its own 283-hectare estate in the West Lothian countryside, close to motorways.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

For admission to the undergraduate program:

• Four Highers (BBCC) including natural sciences or geography
• National 5 (AC) or equivalent exam in English and Mathematics.

For admission to the magistracy:

• Honors degree (first or 2: 1) or equivalent in zootechnics, biology, psychology, zoology or veterinary medicine.
• Proof of English proficiency - IELTS 7.0 or equivalent.

College Profile

The Scottish Agricultural College is a vocational college of agriculture and related industries located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The college is spread over three main campuses at Aberdeen, Ayr and Edinburgh. The institute also consists of around twenty local advisory offices, eight veterinary centres and five research farms. The college works with local government, research, and academic bodies to train and place its students. The Scottish Agricultural College offers undergraduate courses in fields like Agriculture, Applied Science, Poultry, Animals, Food Science, Business Management, Countryside & Conservation, Environmental Studies & Management, Horticulture, Landscape & Garden Design, and Leisure, Tourism & Outdoor Pursuits. Students can either try for three-year full time B.Sc/BA/BA (Honours) or a two-year full time HND (expand). They also have the option of finishing the course part time. Students can choose from six M.Sc degrees/ postgraduate diplomas in Poultry Science, Ecological Economics, Environment Protection, Organic Farming, and Business Management. There are also two MBA programmes in Agribusiness and Food Business Management. There are also opportunities for higher degrees like a PhD. Modules of full time degrees can also be taken individually as part time courses. There are rooms for more than two hundred students at various locations on the three campuses. These rooms have common kitchen equipment and laundry facilities with some of them even having a television set. For recreation purposes, there is an 18-hole golf course in Craibstone. The Scottish Agricultural College has well equipped farms all around Scotland involved in cultivation of grain and care of livestock. It also conducts grassland and mountain research. Each campus has a modern library, computers for online learning and scientific laboratories. The Scottish Agricultural College team of consultants, vets and technicians, and it provide services to farmers and agriculture related business both nationally and globally. "The morning of Sunday 7 July 2019, I went on a meandering walk through Old Aberdeen. One of the places I explored on foot was the University of Aberdeen, including King's College. The University campus is cozy and has clearly marked buildings. Campus members were friendly in their interactions. Vines up the front of one of the buildings showed color change from red to green (red higher up, green lower down). Breaks in the clouds let the sunlight shine through and illuminate different buildings. A chapel with sculptured tomb on campus had various people trickling in and out, perhaps for a morning service."

Morningside University has made a commitment to extend education beyond the confines of the classroom by providing a variety of experiential learning opportunities to students.

SEE ACADEMICS

EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Participate in a paid, semester-long externship in Sioux City, greater Iowa or beyond and work side-by-side with management and production teams doing real agriculture in the real world.

Experiential Learning

Brand new, state-of-the-art greenhouse

Morningside has built a 3,300 square-foot greenhouse on the 2.5-acre site of the current Longfellow Elementary school located on campus. The greenhouse provides laboratory and teaching space for students in several curricular areas of the AAFS program. The location is an experiential learning showpiece while at the same time beautifying the southwest corner of campus.

Students involved with the greenhouse projects are supplying people with fresh produce in the Morningside cafeteria.

The 110’ x 30’ greenhouse includes

• a headhouse (preparation and storage area)
• aquaponics room (fish and other aquatic production)
• grow tower/leafy greens room (production of food quality greens)
• production rooms capable of producing crops with separate climate requirements

You will have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally, and even internationally for professional conferences, industry field trips, or May Term courses. Travel grants and special scholarship eligibility may be available.

Conduct research alongside faculty members, giving you an advantage for graduate school or immediate entry into the agriculture industry. You may also have the opportunity to present findings at the Morningside University Palmer Research Symposium, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), or at regional and national industry events.

Learn By Doing

Agricultural and food studies graduates learn how different agricultural production and business systems affect crop yield, farm profitability, soil health, and models of long-term sustainability. Experiential learning opportunities in animal science, agronomy, environmental law, food safety, agricultural communications, and agricultural teacher education provide students with a well-rounded core that is applied through the externship experience. Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence

This Strategic Action Plan of the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) is the result of 16 months of engagement, listening, and study to identify and prioritize actionable goals and strategies to improve opportunities and outcomes for underrepresented students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders of the College. Altogether, a total of 709 CAS community members, friends, and colleagues directly engaged with and contributed to the development of this plan, via committee discussions, focus group conversations, survey inputs, and consultations with OSU equity leaders.

CAS has a mission to make tomorrow better for everyone, by seeking a critical balance between production and conservation. A requisite component of the CAS mission is an obligation to reflect the composition of the society we serve and to equitably include and engage historically excluded and underserved communities. This Strategic Action Plan is living plan that will be regularly reviewed, revisited, and refined in pursuit of achieving stated goals and advancing Inclusive Excellence across CAS. The Strategic Action Plan is also a community plan that values, engages, and supports the success of all members of the CAS community, and particularly those that have been historically underserved.

The plan’s four strategic goals are:

GOAL 1: Embed, integrate, and advance inclusive excellence within all aspects of CAS.

GOAL 2: Improve recruitment and retention of employees, students, and volunteers from underrepresented communities.

GOAL 3: Create an inclusive, welcoming college and workplace climate to support a sense of belonging and equitable learning, training, and working experiences.

A message from the dean - october 2023.

October has been a very challenging month on our campus and around the world. Here in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, we echo the message Chancellor May shared last Friday. Hate has no place at UC Davis. I see the resilience of our college, the compassion we have for our colleagues and students, and the strength and kindness shown for our community. I see brave people standing up for others, and I stand together with them. In times like these, I am especially grateful for our Principles of Community , as they remind us to be our best selves. Thank you for your empathy, the care you have shown for one another and your continued commitment in lifting up our greater humanity.

This month, we have several reasons to celebrate the greater good within our college and throughout the university. We have new research on the effects of extreme  heat on bird reproduction , guidance on how best to use biomass , new insights on the benefits of crushed volcanic rock on air quality, a better understanding of how viruses in soil give space for new growth, a great example of how our clinical nutrition students are giving back to our communities , and an inside look on how three students spent their summer break conducting research and field work.  

We also recognize the contributions of several faculty, students, and staff, including our advising award recipients , Erica Cefalo with the departments of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology and Environmental Toxicology who was named Outstanding Staff Advisor; Emma Martinez with the Animal Science Advising Center received Outstanding Advising Mentor Award; and Vanessa Talavera, outreach and recruitment coordinator with Undergraduate Academic Programs who was named Outstanding Campus Coordinator.

Beyond our college, last week I had the chance to support our campus community by attending the opening celebration of the Gorman Museum of Native American Art and visit the current exhibition at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art —both beautiful spaces with meaningful collections, situated within easy walking distance from the Arboretum, which is currently thriving and full of migrating birds. Each event highlighted how fortunate we are to be a part of such a vibrant campus and academic environment that continuously feeds our curiosity, imagination and connection.  

Finally, next week as a college we celebrate our Award of Distinction awardees : Jim Finch, Jeffrey Sparks, Tony Turkovich, Lynn Kimsey and Lisa Nash Holmes. They will be honored during a ceremony and reception on Nov. 2, where we will recognize their longtime achievements, support, leadership and service to our college mission. We are grateful for each of their contributions and look forward to celebrating them.

In closing I will part with these thoughts. In a time of great uncertainty around the world, I continue to be moved and inspired by our students, faculty, staff and broader community. The good that they are putting into the world is not only a safe harbor but a guiding light to follow. I hope that you are able to find solace in that light, our community and each other.

University of Oklahoma Faculty Receive $1.8 Million Grant from Environmental Protection Agency to Study Children’s Health Related to Chemical Exposures

OU researchers have received a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to establish a research center to address children’s cumulative health impacts from agricultural and non-chemical exposures. This grant will create the Children’s Environmental Health Center in the U.S. Southern Great Plains, which includes Oklahoma and Texas. The Center will focus on mitigating the chemical and non-chemical stressors that affect school absenteeism caused by gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases.

This collaborative center will be under the direction of Changjie Cai, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health in the Hudson College of Public Health on OU’s Health Sciences Center campus; Diane Horm, Ph.D., director of the Early Childhood Education Institute at OU-Tulsa; and Dan Li, Ph.D. from the University of North Texas College of Education.

Research has shown that children in underserved, rural, and agricultural communities face increased health risks due to the combination of agricultural pollutants in the air, water, and soil, as well as non-chemical stressors such as poverty and limited access to health services. This project addresses an urgent need to investigate the cumulative health impacts of chemical and non-chemical exposures for children in these communities to help keep children healthy.

“Our team will investigate the cumulative health impacts of early exposure to pollutants and the added effect of non-chemical stressors among children in these communities across the United States,” Cai said. “The goal of the Center is to reduce the environmental health disparities and promote environmental justice for children living in underserved, rural agricultural communities.”

Through a multidisciplinary approach, the center will use techniques such as low-cost sensors, satellite observations, air quality modeling and more to establish and evaluate impact assessments. Utilizing those results, affordable interventions will be assessed to reduce school absenteeism and address health disparities.

“At the Early Childhood Education Institute, it has always been our goal to advance and support equity for all children through research,” Horm said. “The opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Cai, Dr. Li, and others on this grant to establish the Children’s Health and Social Vulnerability Index (CHS) will allow us to better assess children’s health disparities in rural schools.”

The CHS will be stakeholder-and data-driven and will focus on children’s health disparities in rural school systems and focus on chemical and non-chemical stressors that lead to absenteeism in school due to gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases.

This research grant is part of EPA’s larger effort to advance children’s environmental health and environmental justice by effectively reducing early childhood and lifetime health disparities in these communities. 

“This collaboration of OU researchers from various disciplines highlights OU’s commitment to supporting our faculty researchers so that they can deliver science-based recommendations to improve the lives of our youngest learners,” said Darrin Akins, vice president for research at the OU Health Sciences Center. “This research will have a strong focus on chemical and non-chemical environmental stressors that children in the Southern Great Plains face every day.”

Jupiter is a black sheep which protects all life on earth.

NEWSWEEK - While Jupiter may be our planetary guardian angel, protecting us from harm, gas giants in other solar systems might actually wreak havoc on other exoplanets nearby.

In our solar system, Jupiter's huge gravitational field deflects comets and asteroids away from our delicate, rocky home planet.

According to a new study  in  The Astronomical Journal ,  small rocky exoplanets similar to Earth may actually be knocked out of the habitable zone by the gravitational impact of large Jupiter-like gas giants.

"It's as if they have four Jupiters acting like wrecking balls, throwing everything out of whack," Stephen Kane, a UC Riverside astrophysicist and co-author of the paper, said in a statement.

The scientists looked into the far-off solar system HD 141399, which has four gas giants situated a long distance from their star, making it a good model for our own solar system, as Jupiter and Saturn are also long way from the sun.

Using computer simulations of the solar system, they found that Earth may not have been able to remain in its habitable orbit had it been in that solar system rather than our own, due to the gravitational effects of the gas giants.
