Freshman: Studying at the MIT has been an enlightening and enriching journey. The opportunity to learn from some of the most distinguished professors and work with bright, ambitious peers is unparalleled. The curriculum is rigorous and challenging, which I appreciate as it pushes students to their intellectual limits. MIT's focus on combining theory with practical application is particularly engaging. For example, not only did I learn the theory behind machine learning algorithms, but I also got to implement these algorithms to solve real-world problems. This hands-on approach is what sets MIT apart from many other institutions. Furthermore, MIT's culture of innovation and entrepreneurship is highly motivating. The environment encourages students to think outside the box, fostering an innovative mindset. It's also commonplace for undergraduates to work in research labs, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in various fields. ... Read 659 reviews

Junior: As a Columbia University student, I am proud of myself and I feel very lucky. The school's name alone boasts prestige and prominence, as so many Nobel Prize winners, presidents, and successful businesspeople hail from the university. To be a part of this community, one that fosters community support as well as a push to strive for self improvement and global impact, has been incredibly motivating and exhilarating for me. Sophomore: As a University of Pennsylvania student, my experience has been transformative. The academic rigor and diverse courses allowed me to explore passions and develop critical thinking. Accessible and knowledgeable faculty shaped my journey, while the vibrant campus life fostered a sense of community among students from diverse backgrounds. I appreciate the emphasis on research opportunities, collaborating with renowned scholars, and Philadelphia's cultural scene, offering internships and networking. However, addressing the cost of attendance with more financial aid options and scholarships is essential for equal access. Moreover, enhancing inclusivity and support for underrepresented groups would strengthen our community further. Junior: I am a transfer student athlete and am planning to attend Dartmouth in the fall. What I loved on my visit was the family atmosphere amongst the faculty and the close relationships they had with their students. I believe that it is important to put an emphasis on undergraduate education and Dartmouth does that the best in comparison to any other school in the nation. From an athletic standpoint I feel like Dartmouth has all the tools and facilities to help me achieve my athletic goals. Coming from an institution that gives athletic scholarships, Ivy leagues do not have that availability. Niche User: I am currently enrolled as an incoming freshman at Brown University but I have been fortunate to participate in two of their pre-college programs. Overall, the academic resources and opportunities to explore STEM-based passions are incredibly diverse and accessible. The campus has amazing faculty that are engaged in the subject, both in and out of the classroom. They provide insightful feedback and support, especially as I had little experience doing lab work in high school. Outside the classroom, there were countless facilities and events that covered a wide variety of interests. These helped me foster a strong sense of community as I was able to connect with peers of similar likes during these events. I love how interconnected the university is with the larger city of Providence, which makes both professional and recreational engagement more accessible. Evanston, IL •

Junior: Northwestern University is a great college for students hoping to find a wide array of academic and extracurricular opportunities. Northwestern offers a wide range of courses on many different topics and because of the number of courses required to complete most majors (12-16), students in the College of Arts and Sciences are able to explore classes outside their majors at their leisure. The Quarter System can feel intimidating at first because of how fast-paced the courses can be but it also allows students to take more classes each year than a semester system which means students get to learn even more! Campus is also beautiful, located right next to Lake Michigan, so students are able to spend time outside of class at the beach and walking on the Lakefill. ... Read 1,470 reviews

Washington University in St. Louis

Alum: I am thankful for my undergraduate experience at Washington University in St. Louis. The college has great connections for post-grad opportunities in multiple fields - business, medicine, research, engineering. I was easily able to switch between the Arts & Sciences program and the Business School at the end of my sophomore year. There is a huge focus on medicine, so even for other career paths there are healthcare adjacent offerings (e.g. Healthcare Management, Bio Medical Engineering, Global Health, Psychology/Neuroscience/Philosophy). The brand name and resources do carry for other non-health related professions too. The classwork can be tough so it's best you find out which paths are a good fit for you in terms of academic rigor, class size, and teaching style. Your counselors can help with this. Good size of the school - not too big to get lost, but not too small to know everyone and the campus is very very beautiful! I suggest visiting and talking to alum to learn more! ... Senior: This is a fabulous choice school for someone looking to truly have the social and academic life balance, such as I am. This environment is more than suitable even for those who are dedicated wholeheartedly either side of that social-academic spectrum- though the opportunities for growth and exploration in each regard are something I refuse to believe can be found on any other campus. The professors are renowned in their respective fields, if not the world, and are advisable, inspiring, generous (most of the time), and constructors of some of the most effective and informative curriculums I can imagine. What is most imperative to emphasize is that exponential emotional, academic, and professional development occurs for every person. If you have faced adversity in the past or are entering college first-gen like me, attending UM will open your eyes, open doors, and change your life past in the best way while you overcome challenges you never thought you could. Sophomore: Hopkins is great! There's always something to do - lots of student organisations, interesting classes, events, parties and places to go to in Baltimore. Labs are very open to taking on undergraduate research assistants. It is more of a struggle narrowing down potential activities to what I can manage than to find things to fill my time. Classes are interesting and a wide range is available. However, some of them are definitely challenging and take up quite a lot of time! It is also difficult to get and maintain a high GPA in most classes because everyone is super smart. Food options are not bad, it varies from time to time and depends on which dining hall but I'm mostly happy with it, and Baltimore has great food options. Dorms are also relatively clean and have good facilities. A disadvantage about Hopkins is the safety around campus, it is mostly safe but sometimes there are robberies or burglaries near campus. ... Emory is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, and it certainly lives up to its reputation. The university boasts an impressive faculty, a plethora of academic programs, and a vibrant campus community. However, I do believe there is room for Emory to improve in a couple of areas. Freshman: So far, Wellesley has been an incredible place. The professors I have had are both highly intelligent academics and great teachers, as well as interesting people, which is certainly a plus! While social life can be cliquey at times, there are plenty of places for you to meet people in your residence hall, in classes, and in clubs. I've bonded with people during random moments over almost anything. Students here are very academically committed and driven, but also find great ways to have fun, like having movie nights in dorm common rooms, going out to study or eat meals in Boston and Cambridge, or using study breaks to chat about life. We also have good dining hall food (my personal favorite dining hall out of our four is Bates Hall). Wellesley's location is also fantastic-- we have all the comforts of being in a quiet suburb while still having access to Boston and Cambridge if you want to experience the livelihood and vibrance of nearby cities! Alum: Hamilton is one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. The campus is beautiful and the facilities are impressive. I was constantly blown away by the intelligence of both my professors and classmates. I hear about people from other schools struggling to get jobs out of college, but I’ve gotten tons of interviews and received several job offers (just accepted one the other day). And from what I can tell, my classmates are finding similar success in the workforce, at grad school, or in whatever they pursue. Hamilton does a fantastic job preparing students for further education; I know several people at T14 law schools and have classmates pursuing PhDs at Ivy Leagues and other top universities. Whatever you want to do, a Hamilton education will prepare you to do it. Oh, and people LOVE Hamilton. Senior: Hello All, I am a student at the University of Washington's Seattle's Foster School of Business. The school of business has its own separate departments from UW, and I'm sure other major options are the same. For example, Foster has its own career center and there is a University-wide career center. All the resources can be overwhelming for students, so I recommend clarifying which department a resource came from. I think the required classes are great and the major options are fantastic. The libraries are phenomenal and useful. There are always activities and events. However, because of its location and events, the UW does attract a lot of tourists, I would recommend avoiding the Quad and Red Square during Cherry Blossom Season. Although Suzzalo is the most well-known library, it also attracts the most tourists, and it's hard to study while people are having a photo shoot, the Allen library is a better place to have an uninterrupted study session. Senior: Fantastic experience thus far. I have transferred from a lackluster institution and Purdue blows it out of the water. Academics within the Polytechnic Institute have been both challenging but rewarding to pursue by yourself--or better yet with others! Campus is beautiful and is rapidly expanding upon but more housing is needed on campus and by West Lafayette (thankfully downtown Lafayette is a great off campus place to be). Opportunities no joke pop up everyday due to the connections and reputation has for its students. And nearly everyone is both kind and helpful in every aspect of your academic career. Freshman: University of Pittsburgh is a great school with many diverse tools students can utilize to get the best out of their time here. From a wide range of studies to a vast option of clubs, University of Pittsburgh allows students to instantly feel connected to the school. In addition, the University of Pittsburgh has fantastic resources especially for Pre-Health related careers. With the UPMC building nearby, you can obtain your medical hours right on campus! You can easily contact a faculty member within the Pre-Health department to discuss the best academic path for you. The campus holds a variety of recreational spots including restaurants, museums, and cafes to study at. However, in the future, I hope to see the university improve their communication with their students regarding Panther Central. Panther Central is Pitt's main communication line where students can ask anything from housing to transportation. Unfortunately, the faculty takes a long time responding to students' emails. ... The only feedback for change that I have is the administration/financial aid side of things is kind of tricky once you are a student. I’ve been at National for 7 months now and still haven’t received my financial aid. Granted the school hasn’t been demanding I pay for my classes right now, I just have Large bill. And advisors don’t know much about that. They did just recently do something where they cross trained the admin team so that they are able to help with everything so that should be really helpful. Sat / act prep online guides and tips, the 12 best creative writing colleges and programs.
College Info

Finding a dedicated creative writing program at a school you're excited about can be a real challenge, and that's even before you start worrying about getting in. Nonetheless, there are some great options. In order to help you find the best school for you, this list rounds up some of the best colleges for creative writing in the United States .
The Best Creative Writing Programs: Ranking Criteria
You should never take college rankings as absolute truth —not even the very official-seeming US News ones. Instead, use these kinds of lists as a jumping-off place for your own exploration of colleges. Pay attention not just to what the rankings are but to how the rankings are determined.
To help with that, I'll explain how I came up with this highly unscientific list of great creative writing colleges. I started by narrowing my search down to schools that offered a specific creative writing major. (If you don't see a school you were expecting, it's likely because they only have a minor.)
In ranking the schools, I considered five major criteria:
- #1: MFA Ranking —If a school has a great graduate creative writing program, it means you'll be taught by those same professors and the excellent graduate students they attract. Schools with strong MFA programs are also more likely to have solid alumni networks and internship opportunities. However, many schools with great undergrad programs do not offer MFAs, in which case I simply focused on the other four options.
- #2: General School Reputation —The vast majority of your classes won't be in creative writing, so it's important that other parts of the school, especially the English department, are great as well.
- #3: Extracurricular Opportunities —One of the key advantages of majoring in creative writing is that it can provide access to writing opportunities outside the classroom, so I took what kind of internship programs, author readings, and literary magazines the school offers into consideration.
- #4: Diversity of Class Options —I gave extra points to schools with a variety of genre options and specific, interesting classes.
- #5: Alumni/Prestige —This last criterion is a bit more subjective: is the school known for turning out good writers? Certainly it's less important than what kind of education you'll actually get, but having a brand-name degree (so to speak) can be helpful.
The Best Creative Writing Schools
Now, let's get to the good stuff: the list of schools! The exact numbering is always arguable, so look at it as a general trend from absolutely amazing to still super great, rather than fixating on why one school is ranked #3 and another is ranked #4.
#1: Northwestern University
Northwestern's undergrad creative writing program boasts acclaimed professors and an unparalleled track record of turning out successful writers (including Divergent author Veronica Roth and short-story writer Karen Russell).
Outside the classroom, you can work on the student-run literary journal, intern at a publication in nearby Chicago, or submit to the Department of English's yearly writing competition . The university is also home to a top journalism program , so if you want to try your hand at nonfiction as well, you'll have plenty of opportunities to do so.
#2: Columbia University
Like Northwestern, Columbia is home to both a world-class creative writing program and a top journalism school (plus one of the best English departments in the country), so you have a wide range of writing-related course options. Columbia also benefits from its location in New York City, which is bursting at the seams with publishing houses, literary journals, and talented authors.

#3: University of Iowa
The University of Iowa's big draw is the infrastructure of its graduate Writers' Workshop, which is often considered the best MFA program in the country.
As an English and Creative Writing major here, you'll take classes from great young writers and established professors alike, and get to choose from a wide range of topics. This major provides transferable skills important for a liberal arts major with a creative focus. You'll also have access to the university's impressive literary community, including frequent readings, writing prizes and scholarships, and the acclaimed literary journal The Iowa Review .
#4: Emory University
Emory is renowned for its dedicated undergrad creative writing program , which draws the very best visiting scholars and writers. Students here have the chance to attend intimate question-and-answer sessions with award-winning authors, study a range of genres, compete for writing awards and scholarships, and work closely with an adviser to complete an honors project.
#5: Oberlin College
A small liberal arts school in Ohio, Oberlin offers very different advantages than the schools above do. You'll have fewer opportunities to pursue writing in the surrounding city, but the quality of the teachers and the range of courses might make up for that. Moreover, it boasts just as impressive alumni, including actress and writer Lena Dunham.
#6: Hamilton College
Hamilton is another small college, located in upstate New York. It's known for giving students the freedom to pursue their interests and the support to help them explore topics in real depth, both inside and outside the classroom. Hamilton's creative writing program takes full advantage with small classes and lots of opportunities to intern and publish; it also has one of the best writing centers in the country.
#7: Brown University
Brown's Literary Arts program offers one of the top MFAs in the US as well as an undergraduate major . For the major, you must take four creative writing workshops and six reading-intensive courses, which span an array of departments and topics, from music and literature to Middle East studies and Egyptology.

#8: Washington University in St. Louis
Washington University has an excellent creative writing MFA program, lots of super specific class options, and a number of scholarships specifically earmarked for creative writing students. This school’s undergraduate English program also offers a concentration in creative writing that allows students to specialize in a specific genre: poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. If you’re interested in exploring your potential in a specific writing genre, Washington University could be a great pick for you.
#9: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT might not be a school you generally associate with writing, but it actually has an excellent program that offers courses in digital media and science writing, as well as creative writing, and provides plenty of guidance on how graduates can navigate the tricky job market.
Not to mention the school is located in Cambridge, a haven for book lovers and writers of all kinds. Though it probably isn’t a good fit for students who hate science, MIT is a great place for aspiring writers who want to build writing skills that are marketable in a wide range of industries.
#10: University of Michigan
University of Michigan is one of the best state universities in the country and has a top-notch MFA program. This school’s undergrad creative writing sub-concentration requires students to submit applications for admittance to advanced creative writing courses. These applications give students crucial practice in both building a writing portfolio and articulating their interest in creative writing to an audience who will evaluate their work. If you're looking to attend a big school with a great creative writing major, this is a fantastic choice.
#11: Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins is another school that's known more for engineering than it is for writing, but, like MIT, it has a dedicated writing program. As a major here, you must take not only courses in prose, poetry, and literature, but also classes on topics such as philosophy and history.
#12: Colorado College
Colorado College is a small liberal arts school known for its block plan , which allows students to focus on one class per three-and-a-half-week block. The creative writing track of the English major includes a sequence of four writing workshops and also requires students to attend every reading of the Visiting Writers Series.
Bonus School: New York University
I didn't include NYU in the main list because it doesn't have a dedicated creative writing major, but it's a great school for aspiring writers nonetheless, offering one of the most impressive creative writing faculties in the country and all the benefits of a Manhattan location.

How To Pick the Best Creative Writing School for You
Just because Northwestern is a great school for creative writing doesn't mean you should set your heart on going there. (The football fans are completely terrifying, for one thing.) So where should you go then?
Here are some questions to ask yourself when looking at creative writing programs to help you determine the best school for you:
Does It Have Courses You're Interested In?
Look at the course offerings and see whether they interest you. While you can't predict exactly what classes you'll love, you want to avoid a mismatch where what you want to study and what the program offers are completely different. For example, if you want to write sonnets but the school focuses more on teaching fiction, it probably won't be a great fit for you.
Also, don't forget to look at the English courses and creative writing workshops! In most programs, you'll be taking a lot of these, too.
What Opportunities Are There To Pursue Writing Outside of Class?
I touched on this idea in the criteria section, but it's important enough that I want to reiterate it here. Some of the best writing experience you can get is found outside the classroom, so see what kind of writing-related extracurriculars a school has before committing to it.
Great options include getting involved with the campus newspaper, working on the school's literary journal, or interning at the university press.
Who Will Be Teaching You?
Who are the professors? What kind of work have they published? Check teacher ratings on Rate My Professors (but make sure to read the actual reviews—and always take them with a grain of salt).
If you're looking at a big school, there's a good chance that a lot of your teachers will be graduate students. But that's not necessarily a bad thing: a lot of the best teachers I had in college were graduate students. Just take into consideration what kind of graduate program the school has. If there's a great creative writing MFA program, then the graduate students are likely to be better writers and more engaged teachers.
What Are the Alumni Doing Now?
If you have a sense of what you want to do after you graduate, see if any alumni of the program are pursuing that type of career. The stronger the alumni network is, the more connections you'll have when it comes time to get a job.
What About the Rest of the School?
Don't pick a school for which you like the creative writing program but dread everything else about it. Most of your time will be spent doing other things, whether hanging out in the dorms, exploring off campus, or fulfilling general education requirements.
Many schools require you to apply to the creative writing major, so make doubly sure you'll be happy with your choice even if you aren't accepted to the program.

The 6 Best Colleges for Creative Writing

When it comes to creative writing, it’s mostly subjective. There are certain conventions and rules that “good” writers will usually follow, however the field is largely based on individual taste. You don’t have to go to college to learn how to be a great writer. Practice and reading can help you get your work where you’d like it to be.
But if you’re a student looking to gain a more concrete and focused education in creative writing, studying the subject in college is a fantastic place to start.
An undergraduate program in creative writing can teach you not only the foundational elements of storytelling but also the more obscure aspects of the craft — aspects that you’re unlikely to come across on your own.
Creative writing degrees also encourage collaboration. Writing may seem like a solitary activity, but any good writer knows that working with others will help you broaden your perspective and take your writing to the next level. A university setting allows students to work on their writing together through workshops and readings, which are designed to push students to be the best that they can be.
So whether you're looking to advance your writing, collaborate with others, or learn from the best of the best, check out a few of the best colleges for creative writing that we’ve compiled on this list.
What should you look for in a creative writing degree?
Because creative writing is so personal, what you should look for will depend greatly on your personal preferences. But there are a few areas that generally stay the same across most programs.
For example, think about the type of creative writing you’re interested in. Do you like creating long or short fiction? Creative nonfiction? Are you secretly (or not so secretly) a poet?
If you like to write a character analysis , you should consider becoming a literary critic or screenwriter. This will make it easier to choose colleges and specialize in those areas.
Each program will offer different tracks for creative writing students, usually in the form of workshops. These workshops generally fall in three categories: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. In your degree, you’ll be asked to focus in one of these areas (at most universities).
It’s important to consider the area that your chosen school excels in. Is the university you’re interested in primarily focused on poetry or creative nonfiction?
It’s also worth noting that you should take some time to research the faculty at the colleges you’re interested in. Faculty are often just as important as the tracks that each school offers; faculty will have an instrumental role in shaping the type of writing that you produce, so you’ll want to make sure that you apply to schools where you respect the faculty and the published work that they have created.
What can you do with a creative writing degree?
Creative writing is one of those degrees that does not typically accompany a formal career path. It will largely be up to you to determine what type of career you pursue post-graduation.
When you consider what you want to do once you have your degree, think about how your education in writing can work in a versatile setting. Many employers find liberal arts majors to be attractive candidates because of their ability to communicate well.
Check out just a few career options for creative writing majors below:
- English teacher
- Communications specialist
- Public relations coordinator
- Academic advisor
- Copywriter
- Ghost writer
The best colleges for creative writing:
The university of iowa.
In the middle of the midwest, the University of Iowa has a pretty impressive claim to fame: the school is home to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. This program is for students pursuing their MFA degree, and it is fiercely competitive. But, as undergraduate students studying creative writing, you will benefit from studying at Iowa as well.
As an undergraduate student, you can pursue a dual degree in English and Creative Writing at the University of Iowa. You’ll get a world-class education in the literary field through professors who instruct those just starting out as well as more seasoned writers the likes of whom flock to the Iowa Writers’ Program. You’ll also have the opportunity to study with teaching assistants who are currently in the graduate program, which will help you get a diverse understanding of the literary world from a variety of different angles.
At the University of Iowa, you’ll also have the opportunity to focus on a literary and publishing track , which will give you the skills and education you need in order to move forward with a career in literary publishing. In the literary world, skills are fluid, but experience is essential. If you study at the University of Iowa, you’ll graduate with four years of experience in the field that you love and will be ready to take your creative pursuits to new heights.

Oberlin College
Creative writing courses are typically rolled into another major at most schools. You can expect to see a dual degree in English and Creative Writing at many major universities — and this is a great option for students who might want to broaden their area of study. And whether you’re writing a novel or a why college is important to me essay, as featured on Edubirdie , the skills you’ll acquire will be instrumental
But for students who want to dive headfirst into the study of creative writing, Oberlin College is the place to go. Oberlin College offers students a creative writing major that is independent of any other degree. Students interested in this degree must take the required prerequisites before applying for admission into the degree in their upper-level years at the college. It might seem like a lot, but the competitive admission process at Oberlin is well worth the wait.
The program not only prepares students to enter the “real world” by helping them refine their work to be the best that it can be, but it also connects students with in-demand jobs and internships . This is highly unusual in creative writing programs, and many schools do not assist students in making a plan for post-graduation. So make sure to keep Oberlin College on your list of the best colleges for creative writing.
Amherst College
Many of the universities on this list offer students the option to major in creative writing. Amherst College is a little bit different.
The school believes in a diverse, liberal arts education for students. This means that students will interact with various departments throughout their time at the university instead of concentrating all of their time and energy on just one subject.
For those who are interested in gaining an education in creative writing, they will be directed to the Creative Writing Center , which provides students with opportunities to study fiction, poetry, and playwriting, among other writing pursuits.
While certainly not for everyone, Amherst College’s model of creative writing study is unique, and for many, the best way they can learn and study the subject of creative writing. The interdisciplinary approach that Amherst takes in its education of creative writing allows students to dip their toes into the field without having to commit to a degree that may not provide them with solid career prospects post-graduation.
Wellesley College
Wellesley College is perfect for students who want to dip their toes into creative writing while getting a small university experience. At Wellesley, students can declare an English major that will give them the chance to concentrate in creative writing.
There are so many opportunities for creative writing students to explore their field at Wellesley. Students can submit to and participate in a variety of literary magazines, which is a great way to get involved with the literary world. Wellesley College also hosts the Ruhlman Conference , which showcases student work from a variety of different disciplines, including creative writing. When working in a creative field, it’s important to have the chance to receive feedback on your work, and at Wellesley, you will most certainly get that exposure.

Emory University
If you venture down south to Atlanta, Georgia, you’ll find Emory University. In this sunny state that has phenomenal sweet tea, students can get a great education in creative writing.
Emory University offers many educational opportunities for its students who choose a creative writing major. For one, students must take five workshop classes instead of three or four, which is typical at many other universities. This focus on workshops helps lend the degree intensity, which might be appealing to some students who want to dive head-first into the world of creative writing.
Hamilton College
For students who are interested in taking a few unconventional courses while studying for a degree in creative writing, Hamilton College may be just the place for you. Hamilton gives aspiring students the chance to study either creative writing or literature, and although both tracks have their own class requirements, they both allow students to take some pretty neat classes.
Some of those classes include, “Food in Literature,” “Finding Identity,” and our personal favorite, “American Ghosts,” which looks at the stories about supernatural beings in film and fiction. How cool is that? Not every college will allow you to take such unique courses for a degree.
And Hamilton’s variety of interesting classes speaks to a wider point: when looking for schools to get your degree in creative writing from, start small. State schools will certainly have a lot of great options for new writers, but liberal arts schools like Hamilton can give students a more concentrated education in the arts. You’ll be able to take classes that have more specificity (such as a class on ghosts in storytelling), and that’s not something you can easily find at a non-liberal arts school.
But whichever school you choose to go to for your creative writing degree, make sure it’s one that will put you and your writing first. Creative writing majors are often brushed aside at some universities in favor of other, seemingly more important degrees. Make it a priority to find a school where you and your creative pursuits will be respected and supported. The schools on this list are the best colleges for creative writing and will help you succeed in your writing ambitions.
