Veedyou Media is a video editing agency whose mission is to provide clients with an opportunity to tell their stories and reach more people with video. Hiring a video editor for your YouTube channel, your digital marketing agency or your business is probably one of the best investments you can make in 2024. Using a video editing agency is better than pretty much all of the other options you have: hire an expensive full-time editor, use an unreliable freelancer, or waste time editing videos yourself instead of putting your valuable time into something more important for you. With our fixed rate per project, you will have your video editing costs under control and you can allocate more time and money to growing your business.

The benefits of using Veedyou Media:

Time-saving: Many business owners are busy and don't have the time or expertise to edit videos themselves. By outsourcing this task to a video editing service, you can focus on other critical aspects of your business that require your attention. This can increase your productivity and help you achieve your business goals faster. Professional-quality videos: Having high-quality videos can help your business stand out from its competitors and build a strong online presence. By using a video editing service, clients can ensure that their videos are polished, visually appealing, and engaging for their audience. Reduced stress: Video editing can be a time-consuming and tedious task. Outsourcing this work to professionals can reduce the stress and anxiety associated with editing. This can also free up time and energy to focus on other essential tasks. Work-life balance: Many business owners struggle to balance their work and personal life. By outsourcing video editing, they can free up more time to spend with their loved ones and pursue their hobbies and interests outside of work. Business growth: Video marketing is becoming increasingly important for businesses to reach their target audience and grow their brand. With us, you can create consistent and professional-looking video content that can help you attract more customers and increase your revenue.

What we do...

Podcast video editing.

Podcasters, many of them with 1M+ subscribers, trust us to edit promotional videos, interviews, stream shows, and any kind of video content.

When you churn out videos like a candy machine dispensing treats, good video editing isn’t an option but a necessity to ensure the quality of the content.

You need a dedicated team like Veedyou Media to reduce your workload and also maintain a high standard which is a non-negotiable demand of all large broadcasters.

Our multi-camera video edits are crisp, tight, and just fabulous.

YouTube can be very lucrative nowadays.

But you need to be consistent, post regularly, and just never miss a deadline.

We know that firsthand from the YouTubers we are working with it. And we also know that video editing takes so much more time than shooting the video.

It’s a no-brainer that at some point you will need to outsource video editing and use the extra time to film more and more videos.

YouTubers are using Veedyou’s video editing services to do just that.

And it has been working great for many of them.

YouTube video editing

Real estate video editing.

Real estate looks so much better in a cool video than just pictures.

And a lot of realtors understood that right away.

But not many real estate professionals have the time or skill set to put together that cool video that will get them more clients.

It doesn’t take much to trigger our curiosity and get us down to work.

Do you have an idea, a couple of slides, or an iPhone clip; our video editors are here to lend their expertise to make a magnificent marketing tool from decent footage.

We pride ourselves on providing affordable video editing services for small businesses to help them realize their true potential.

For start-ups and small businesses, time is money.

So, without delay, share your raw footage, no matter if it was filmed with a smartphone or consumer-grade camera, let’s get it edited and polished and out there to the audience.

Vertical video editing

Home & personal video editing.

Editing videos for average people like you and me is what we love the most.

It’s definitely worth our time and effort.

Having a chance to share with your children their childhood video, making a tribute video for parents on their anniversary, and creating a family video from short home clips are some of the ways people create and preserve happy memories.

We can help you make more of your memories.

Veedyou video editing services will take your phone-recorded home videos to create something unique and special.

You can’t imagine the joy of seeing our client’s faces light up and the happiness in their voices when they see the result.

We have edited hundreds of these kinds of videos and we would gladly do a thousand more.

The happiness and gratitude our clients express are worth a million bucks.

A lot of people use our video editing services to create wedding videos.

The reason is simple. We ensure the wedding video captures the romance, excitement, and happiness of the occasion.

Whether it’s an hour-long video, a wedding highlight video, or an old video that needs a modern makeover, we are here to create a lasting memory of the day that you’ll always treasure.

Wedding video editing

Corporate video editing.

Last but not least we are working with a handful of very large corporations.

These are multinational companies with a very clearly defined brand identity, company mission, and vision.

These companies are using our video editing services to create professional, branded, crisp-looking videos that serve a clearly defined scope.

For these types of clients, we often do voice-over recordings and use stock footage and licensed music.

Our drone/aerial video editing services combine technology and creativity to transform raw aerial footage into captivating cinematic masterpieces.

Our skilled team of video editors understands the nuances of drone footage, curating the most breathtaking shots and employing precise editing techniques, seamless transitions, and stunning effects.

Whether you’re a real estate agent, adventure enthusiast, or filmmaker, we tailor our services to meet your specific needs, delivering exceptional quality and attention to detail.

From showcasing properties from above to capturing awe-inspiring landscapes, we bring a new dimension to your projects.

Whether you need business videos , YouTube content, 2D/3D videos , feature film editing and color grading , music videos , or commercials , we got you covered.

The only thing we DON’T do is shooting videos.

Our team has more than 150+ years of experience in video editing, color grading and VFX.

We have an office in the US, WY, and our artists from Los angles, California, Spain, Italy and India to help you produce engaging video content — with half of our clients located in the United States, we have an international presence that extends to brands in Europe and the United Kingdom. Our goal is to help our clients produce meaningful connections with their audience using compelling video content, whether it’s video editing, color grading, VFX or animation.

  • Pre production (animation only): then we’ll develop a concept, script, and dedicate the best talent. Each stage of the process requires your sign-off so you’re always satisfied with the outcome.
  • Production (animation only): for animation, we’ll then illustrate out the entire storyboard before heading into motion.
  • Post production: you’ll have a video editor, colorist, motion graphics expert or VFX team, that will handle all the video editing from start to finish.
  • Delivery: once video editing is completed, all the media files will be made available for download following your final sign-off.

After years of creating relationship with the best artists around the world, we are confident to say that we are specialized in the services we offer.

Post-production is our only focus and our 200+ clients can back us up.

Our main services are video editing and color grading and we have teams for both startups and Hollywood production houses.

Our clients are companies , production houses , agencies and creators who want quality videos, free up their time, scale and improve their video performance.

We do not work with low quality footage and although we offer different types of packages in every service we provide, we don’t work with low budget clients.

If you’re at the discovery stage, that’s completely ok — you can still  get in touch with us!

If you’re ready to proceed with a video project, we highly recommend including the following in your brief:

1. A clear and concise description of the project goals, and what you’d like your video to achieve. 2. A detailed description of the target audience, and the channels that you’re looking for the video to be distributed across. 3. A list of specific deliverables that are required, including cut-downs, ratios or services. 4. A timeline for the project. 5. Your ideal budget range. 6. If you’re after multiple videos, the scope of video editing services you’re looking for.

The best videos will also start with good references. If you have a video style or example that you like, please include it in your brief. If you need help choosing a style, you can use our portfolio search tool .

Sure! We do our best to help clients with all and every type of raw file and video format. We have conversion tools that can help us crack an odd video. But, if we can’t, we most likely know someone who can do it for you.

Why Outsource Video Editing?

Video editing and post-production is a vital step in your production process. But you might wonder — why do you need to outsource your video editing to someone else? It’s a valid question, the answer to which lies in your business objectives.

First of all, it’s a smart business choice. No matter how impressively executed, your raw footage is hardly ever in sequence. The shooting rarely happens in the order in which the frames are to be presented. It is often done in a way that’s most efficient in terms of scenes, location, availability of performers, and other factors. The unedited film won’t make any sense to viewers, while simply clubbing together your raw footage doesn’t tell a compelling story. You need to spend hours and resources in getting your post-production right. After all, the final, sleek finish makes a world of difference.

However, post-production can be time-consuming; even more so unless video editing is a part of your core business. The cost of training and maintaining an in-house editing team can be huge. This is why so many video producers worldwide choose to outsource video editing services .

Outsourcing your post-production needs gives you the access to the very best video editing services like we offer. Our Video Editing Company specializes in every post-production trick and tactic in the book and our experience spans across industries so we understand what works for an audience in a specific business sector.

Our commitment to perfection, transparent and no-nonsense attitude, and a purely value-driven approach combine to make us one of the best professional video editors in the business that pull out all stops to produce high-quality post-production results in reasonable budget.

Pros and Cons of Vimerse

Producing professional content of supreme quality is Flosky's forte, and they are a leading video editing service.

If you’re searching for a comprehensive video editing service, Flocksy could be an appropriate consideration. Flocksy offers a spectrum of creative services, including expert video editing. In addition to this, they provide graphic design, custom illustrations, and copywriting services. Further amenities include voice-overs, animations, and web design. Additionally, Flocksy is equipped to assemble an entire team for larger-scale projects, functioning as a central hub for diverse creative needs.

Pricing of Flocksy

Regarding budget, at Flocksy, the “gold” plan is available at a monthly cost of $995, enabling you to make two orders concurrently. Want more? Certainly! The “platinum” plan for a $1459 monthly rate gives you the added advantage of placing three orders simultaneously. However, the $499 monthly “silver” plan does not include video editing. Regrettably, this may not meet your video editing needs. Therefore, always choose with discretion.

Pros and Cons of Flocksy

Cutyeti  .

CutYeti is a top-notch video editing service that excels in producing high-quality content.

Imagine a platform to access a wide range of personalized video editing services. That pretty much describes CutYeti. It’s an editing service that lives up to its promise of delivering top-notch results. But what sets it apart is its team of experienced editors, all based in the US, with a minimum of three years in the field. It’s like having access to a professional team on demand. While their name may bring to mind a creature from folklore, their service is grounded in modern technology.

Pricing of CutYeti

Thinking of using CutYeti? While their top-notch video editing services don’t come cheap, they certainly provide quality. Their base package is $597 monthly, offering a single 2-minute video order. Want more? Their mid-tier plan, priced at $1,297 monthly, allows for a 3-minute video and two simultaneous orders. For those needing even more, their premium offer comes at a hefty $2,397 per month, accommodating four 5-minute video orders simultaneously. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but don’t quality results sometimes require a bigger budget?

Pros and Cons of CutYeti

Cutpro media.

CutPro Media is a top-notch video editing service that excels in producing high-quality professional content.

If you’re seeking a service proficient in editing wedding footage , real estate promotion videos, and commercial content, CutPro Media is a viable option. It’s worth noting that this platform may be particularly beneficial if these specific types of video editing align with your requirements.

Pricing of CutPro Media

When it comes to CutPro Media’s pricing, there’s something for everyone. Their wedding video edits are a bargain at $200. For other genres like real estate, corporate, or commercial video edits, you’re looking at a modest $250 per video. And here’s a fun twist: they offer extra-special services just for wedding videos. Talk about niching down!

Pros and Cons of CutPro Media

What are the Key Features to Consider When Choosing a Video Editing Service?

Embarking on the video editing journey requires understanding the essential tools that aid the process. Here are some features to consider for your upcoming video editing tasks:

  • User-friendly Interface: A complex design can be an obstacle when video editing. An ideal platform should feature a straightforward interface, clear instructions, and learning resources to ensure a hassle-free editing process.
  • Customization: The ability to add a unique touch to your videos is a critical factor. The chosen service should provide the flexibility to incorporate personalized elements varying from doodles to color filters, giving you control over the creative output.
  • Range of Formats: In the modern age of high-resolution content, your video editing platform should support a variety of file formats and resolutions, including 4K and beyond, catering to the diverse needs of the viewers.
  • Creative add-ons: To create high-quality content, your service must feature various innovative tools, such as sound effects, filters, and transitions. These add-ons can enhance the visual appeal of your videos.
• Export Options: After creating a video masterpiece, the platform should provide easy sharing options so you can distribute your video across various platforms – Facebook, YouTube, Email, or any other device.
  • Customer Support: Reliable customer support is critical to assist with potential technical issues. The service should have a responsive customer support team for troubleshooting, preferably available 24/7.

These features are crucial in any video editing platform. When you find a service that checks all these boxes, you’re all set for an efficient video editing experience.

How Much Does a Professional Video Editing Service Typically Cost?

So you’re probably thinking, “How much will this cost me?” Well, let’s break it. Professional video editing services typically feature pricing models influenced by various vital factors. Things like the project’s complexity come into play – are you whipping up a birthday montage or a full-blown corporate commercial? Then there’s the length of the video; an epic feature film isn’t going to come at the same price tag as a snappy social media clip, right? And don’t forget the timeline. Need it done yesterday? That urgency may be priced at a premium. So, next time you’re looking at video editing services, keep these aspects front and center in your mind.

Remember: When it comes to video editing, you often get what you pay for, so cheaper isn’t always better!

Now let’s dive into the specifics:

  • Basic Video Editing typically involves cutting and merging video clips, adding music or voice-overs, and primary special effects. Expect prices to range between $25 to $75 per hour of footage.
  • Advanced Video Editing: This includes all the essential services but adds more complex features like graphics, text animation, color grading, and sound engineering. You could be looking at anywhere from $50 to $150 per hour for these services.
  • Full-Service Production: This is for those creators who want an all-in-one solution. For a complete production package that includes concept development, shooting, and post-production, businesses could charge anywhere from $1,000 to over $5,000, depending on the scope of work and required resources.

That’s a pretty wide range. Feel free to negotiate and consult your budget with your chosen service provider. It doesn’t hurt to ask for a detailed breakdown of costs – it’s your right, after all!

Now, let’s say you’re on a tight budget or just starting and finding these numbers overwhelming. Boy, do we have something for you? Stick around; we have an affordable alternative that will make your day and pocket very happy. But shhh! More on that in the next section.

What are the Advantages of Using a Professional Video Editing Service?

A picture may paint a thousand words, but a well-edited video tells a tale and more! So, why exactly should you consider a professional video editing service? Here’s why.

  • Quality and Professionalism: Have you ever seen a Hollywood film as raw footage? Probably not. There’s an artistry behind every scene we see. Professional video editors are the maestros orchestrating this transformation, lifting your footage from ‘blah’ to ‘bravo.’ They pour their expertise into molding the raw footage, ensuring your content sparkles with quality and professionalism.
  • Advanced Tools and Techniques : Want a cache of aliens to invade your neighborhood picnic video? Easy peasy! Okay, maybe not aliens, but the advanced tools available to a professional video editing service can infuse your content with the correct dose of charisma. From color grading and motion graphics to advanced effects, they can transform your video from simple to spectacular in a snap.
  • Efficient Time Utilization : Time’s ticking, and there’s still that pile of unedited videos glaring at you. Outsourcing the editing to a pro enables you to focus on other aspects of your work or life. They’ll wade through hours of footage, pick out the gems, and weave them into a narrative you’ll be proud to share.
  • Tailored Video Editing : Like a finely tailored suit, professional video editing services craft each edit to fit your content. They align their edits with your unique vision and preferences, ensuring that the final product doesn’t just complement the content but embodies it.
  • Cost-effectiveness : Unless you’ve got a tree producing dollars, affordability is essential. With the high price tag of professional editing software, plus time spent learning to use it, hiring a professional video editor might lighten your financial load in the long haul.

However, keep in mind that one size doesn’t fit all. If you’re after a more budget-friendly and user-friendly alternative, consider Animotica. Its professional editing features are ready to take your content to the next level without breaking the bank.

Hiring an editor is expensive.

Or At Least It Used To Be…

A video editor is by far the most important asset you can add to your team if you’re a YouTuber, digital marketer, or small business that creates and publishes online videos. Maybe you have considered hiring an in house editor (expensive), tried to manage a freelancer (not reliable), or maybe you even edit your videos yourself (I tried that too before burning out).  In the end, none of these options ever work out.  The whole reason you’re making videos is to make more money, find more freedom in your life, and to have fun creating incredible videos…not to slave over your keyboard all day and eventually burn out. Double down on making more videos and better videos with our flat rate video editing service that will add more value to your business than any other tool you’ve ever seen before.  I know it’s a bold statement, but that’s because it’s true. When you sign up today you will be able to:

  • Get your time back to focus on the much more important things in your business.  This is the 80/20 rule.
  • Become the authority in your space by having better looking videos than your competitors.
  • Eliminate stress from slaving over a hot keyboard.  This alone makes this incredible deal worth it.
  • Free up more time to spend with your family so you don’t miss another soccer game again!
  • Lastly you’ll finally be able to scale your online business.  Sign-up today and remove the real bottleneck in your business.

Hi! My name is Augie and I started Vidchops in 2017. After releasing over 300 videos and gaining over 20 million views I literally quit YouTube.  It’s called “YouTube Burnout” and it’s pretty common so be careful.   I did make well over $100,000 though with my channel and so I know what it’s like to be on top of the world and living the dream.  It wasn’t always easy, but once I started outsourcing my video editing I really started to earn more money and my channel blew up! I landed brand deals with Nike, Wilson Basketball, and launched a complete “backend” business that allowed me to earn a full-time income by simply creating online videos with my wife as my “camera woman.” It’s now my mission to help other video creators scale their business to over 7 figures by releasing videos online.

We can edit any kind of online video from Facebook ads, instagram videos, to our speciality, YouTube videos.  We also edit commercials, real estate videos, and online course videos.  We do have limitations though and they are:

– The finished video can’t be longer than 15 minutes

– We can’t do voice overs.

– We can’t create 2D and 3D animations.

– Subtitles do cost extra ($95/month for all plans)

Our turnaround time is 1 – 2 Days and our revisions are 1 business day. But if your project is complex we might ask for additional hours.

The short answer is…depending on your video request frequency and revision request frequency you can get 8-12 videos back a month!  Let me explain…Our editors are super fast.  We offer a 2 business days turnaround time and we will work on one video of yours at a time. When we finish that video we start on the next one.  Feel free to upload 4, 5, 6 videos to us at a time.  We’ll build a queue and start editing the first video in the queue.

You will get free storage up to 100GB with us. All you need is a free Google email account.

After you signup, we will share a dedicated folder with you.

Your shared folder will have a few folders in it.  One folder is called “Raw Footage.”  Anytime you want to make a request simply create a NEW folder inside that folder.  Title that new folder with the date and just backdate each if needed.  Then place your video files in there.  If you have B-roll simply create a B-roll folder and so on and so on.  Just be organized, that’s all.

After payment, you will be redirected to create an account on our client – editor portal.  There you just need to complete your profile that includes a few questions about your brand and style of video.  We will then match you with your editor within 8 hours and send you a welcome email with a shared Google drive folder link where you can upload to.  You’re all setup and from on just…

Follow three simple steps here.

1. Upload your videos to a dedicated Google drive.

2. Complete your video request from inside of Portal. Your dedicated Editor will take that card from there and you will see it going from different phases of editing, Assign → Editing → Quality check → Submission.

As soon as our editor is done with your video, you will get an email from our system with a download link to the video.  There you can ask for any revisions you’d like using a timestamping comment system.

You will have direct access to your editor through email.  The more seamless way to communicate is through The Vidchops Portal.  Once you make your purchase, you’ll automatically be redirected to a form where you will create an account to our Portal where you can request video edits and collaborate with your editor through comments.  You’ll also receive an email from your editor within 24 hours of signing up.  Like I said, you can always communicate with them through simple email too.  Portal is a simple project management tool that will enable you to:

– Submit video editing requests.

– Provide feedback on the card through description to your editor.

– Obtain a video link to download it from Dropbox.

– If you want any revisions you can just make a timestamped comment in the portal, 🙂.  Your editor will read those revision comments and will make changes accordingly.

Yes, we do color grade but this is basic color grading. We can tone your footage, fix basic white balance problems, exposure problems etc. But we will not go into masking and more complex gradings.  Our clients love how we color grade their stuff though, they tell us in testimonials!

Closed captions are included in both the VidChops Weekly and VidChops Pro plans. Please note, this is for repurposed shorts only and not long form YouTube videos.

Yes we can.  We can include your B-roll or we can add b roll from our stock footage library.  All you have to do is request it.  We also have access to a large royalty-free music library.  That is also included in each of our plans.

Yes, You can upload 60 min of raw footage and the video deliverables can’t be over 20 minutes long except under special circumstances.

File size in total per order must also not exceed more than 40GB.

For any custom query please send us an email at  [email protected] .

Our editors work on FCPX and Premier Pro. This is another thing that separates us from our copycats and allows us to include way better CTA’s, callouts, and other animations.

Your dedicated editor will follow all you branding guidelines and will make sure to make your videos better than your current ones.

Yes we offer 50% commission on the front end. We also offer recurring commissions for special affiliates. Please send us an email at [email protected]

It means no complex 2D and 3D animations from scratch.  We can’t create the footage for your project from scratch.  We will provide text animations and calls to action.

So this is how it works. We will edit your video in standard 16:9 format. Once you approve the video,  we will realize that video to the other two social media channels of you liking without any additional cost. For example Instagram feed video 1.1 and instagram story 9:16.  Depending on what you want this may take another 24 hours for these separate versions.

Our editors train our editors on how to do this and it’s really our secret sauce.  We know you only want the clips where you look your best and that’s exactly what we’re going to include.  This objective eye helps to improve the quality of your final videos.  We also ask you all the right questions in your on-boarding process to learn what you’re looking for and then we will take that and improve upon it.  Remember, we offer unlimited revisions as well so if there is ever a small change you want to be made we can do that.

Yes!  We have edited well over 3,000 videos at this point, but here are a few of those examples:  https://vidchops.com/our-portfolio

Best video editing software in 2024

Paid or free, the best video editing software lets you make great home movies for little investment

best video editing software

  • Best paid software
  • Best free software
  • How to choose
  • How we test

Having access to the best video editing software is incredibly important if you produce video content regularly. Whether you’re an amateur filmmaker, an experienced enthusiast, or an established cinematographer, having the right tools at your disposal is vital to achieving the outcome you need.

The best video editing software options are now more powerful than ever before, providing everything you need to produce professional video content. However, even the highest level software applications are designed to be user friendly, including to amateurs, often featuring tutorials and accessible UIs. Nor do you need to be put off by price, as most of the options on our list come in at less than $100, while there are also some great free video editing software packages too, which we’ve included below.

After testing a number of programs, we think that Adobe Premiere Elements is the best video editing software for most people. Although it’s missing some advanced features, it’s got an intuitive interface and a gentle learning curve. That said, it still has plenty of advanced tools, so professionals will also feel right at home.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only option for you, though, so to help you make the right choice, we’ve tested a range of products to evaluate their features, tool sets, ease of use and value for money. Without further ado, read on to find out our picks of the best video editing software.

The best video editing software in 2024: Top Picks

These are our top three picks for the title of best video editor in 2024. However, there are more to choose from than just these three, and others may suit your needs better. Read on to see the whole list.

1. Adobe Premiere Pro

1. Adobe Premiere Pro Premiere Pro is our pick of the best video editing software overall. It's the video editing program used by professionals the world over, thanks to its user-friendly interface and best-in-class feature set. However, because of its price (Premiere Pro starts at $20.99 per month), it's best for those who plan to do a lot of video editing and some people may find Premiere Elements 2022 (below) to be a better fit.

2. CyberLink PowerDirector 365 This video editor is less expensive than Premier Pro, but still has a wealth of cutting-edge features. It's a great choice, especially if you're a Windows user. (The new Mac version is good, but lacks the complete feature-set). PowerDirector 365 starts at $51.99 for an annual subscription.

3. Corel VideoStudio Ultimate Corel VideoStudio Ultimate is powerful but easy-to-learn, and can be used to create simple videos without fuss. That's not to say Corel VideoStudio Ultimate doesn't have a great feature-set: it supports a huge array of tools for when you're ready to make more complex videos. Corel VideoStudio Ultimate costs $99.99.

The best video editing software you can buy today

1. adobe premiere elements 2022.

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

When it comes to user-friendliness, sophisticated features and ways to output your video, the best video editing software for most people is the cross-platform Adobe Premiere Elements.

The program uses Adobe's Sense.ai artificial intelligence to make it easier to perform edits. Its Guided Edits feature remains a great tool for demystifying the entire process for novice filmmakers, and there's now additional support for 4K resolutions and stabilized video, plus tools for selective edits, double-exposure video, and real-time effects. There are also outputs for social media, video reframing and support for vertical videos.

However, it still lacks features such as 360-degree video editing, or support for multicam editing. But Adobe's program is the most well-rounded of all the video editing software we've tested.

Read our full Adobe Premiere Elements review .

2. CyberLink PowerDirector 365

At long last, CyberLink PowerDirector is available for Mac as well as Windows users, bringing a dazzling array of fun, advanced video editing features wrapped in a stunning, easy-to-use package to a new audience.

CyberLink offers several versions of PowerDirector: PowerDirector Ultra ($99) and PowerDirector Ultimate ($139) are one-time purchases, while PowerDirector 365 ($69.99/year is a subscription model that comes with Shutterstock integration, unlimited access to CyberLink's background music and video editing plugins. (You can find a full comparison here ).

One reason Mac users may want to stick with another program is that the Windows version of PowerDirector 365 has more features and tools than the Mac version. For example, there's no support for importing 360 photos and videos. But there's still enough else here to keep many intrigued.

Read our full review of CyberLink PowerDirector 365 .

3. Corel VideoStudio Ultimate

Corel has long been a competitor to Adobe for video editing software, and continues that rivalry with VideoStudio Ultimate, an outstanding editing package for beginners on the Windows platform.

VideoStudio is a powerful but easy-to-learn app for anyone who wants to make simple videos quickly without fussing around with complex controls. Its spare but inviting interface offers a huge array of tools, including 4K support, 360-degree video editing, multicam support, more than 2,000 effects, enhanced lens-correction tools, and 3D text editing. Our biggest issue is that it's Windows-only and you can't customize your workspace as easily as you can with other programs.

4. VideoPad

VideoPad is fairly unusual among the best video editing software programs in that it works on both Macs and PCs, which broadens its appeal and reach. However, there are more features available for the Windows version than the Mac version.

You can download a non-commercial version of VideoPad for free, but you'll have to put up with some annoying notifications, so we'd recommend the paid version. A Home Edition ($39) and Master's Edition ($69) get rid of those, and offer more features, such as unlimited audio tracks and plugins.

While VideoPad lacks the flashy, whiz-bang appeal of some commercial apps, it’s still a rock-solid choice for simple video editing. The app offers a number of YouTube choices ranging from 480p to 4K, as well as Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox and Google Drive.

5. Final Cut Pro X

Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro are pretty much neck and neck when it comes to feature-rich, professional-level video editing. Both are industry leaders, and it’s hard to say that one is better than the other overall. However, there are some important differences.

One of those is the pricing model. Unlike Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro isn’t subscription-based. However, it does come with a bit of a hefty price tag. While in the long run it’s certainly cheaper than shelling out each month for a subscription, some users may be hesitant to commit to spending such a large sum. Fortunately, Final Cut Pro also comes with a free 90-day trial, so you’ll have time to play around before making any decisions.

While Premiere Pro works beautifully with Creative Cloud (and if that’s your primary workspace, then we recommend Adobe’s video editing software), Final Cut Pro fits perfectly into the larger Apple ecosystem. It’s built to take advantage of Metal for wicked-fast graphics, and is optimized for Mac Pro.

There’s no shortage of advanced features, like the Magnetic Timeline, range-of-effect options, and intelligent Smart Conform cropping, which follows dominant motion on screen to ensure nothing essential gets cut. It’s smart, fast, and built for Mac. Unless you’re wed to Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro has a lot to offer.

6. Pinnacle Studio

Pinnacle Studio comes to us from the same makers of VideoStudio Ultimate, graphics and media heavy-hitter Corel, so it should come as no surprise that it’s made our list of the best video editing software. It’s built for a more professional audience than VideoStudio and includes support for multicam video, stop-motion video, motion tracking, 360-degree VR, and 4K video.

Recent updates have brought a much cleaner interface, and the software is now easy and enjoyable to use, although we occasionally ran into some buggy or slow behavior. An initial Home screen includes helpful tutorials, news and feature updates, and add-ons. Three additional modes, Import, Edit, and Export, include all the tools you need to create professional-looking videos.

Pinnacle also boasts impressive rendering speeds and a large library of effects, plus good audio editing tools. Professional editors will be happy to find a range of pro features, like video masking, clip nesting, LUT presets, and batch processing.

Fans of Corel will feel right at home with Pinnacle’s newly polished look and wide array of pro-level features.

7. Filmora9

Filmora9 by Wondershare is one of the best video editing software apps for enthusiastic amateurs and those just starting out. It has a simple, clean, and intuitive interface that’s easy to understand and navigate, and plenty of effects and filters that can be easily applied to footage (YouTubers rejoice). The royalty-free sound library, with effects and music, makes it easy to add emotion and flair.

It lacks many of the pro features you’ll find in Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro, like support for motion tracking, multicam, or VR, but then it’s not made for the same audience or level of knowledge. It also doesn’t carry a professional price tag. There’s a fully-featured free version (with watermark), and the full version costs just $59.99, with no watermark and full user support.

If you’re just getting started with video editing and want to learn the ropes with a super-simple but powerful app that won’t break the bank, Filmora9 is a great option.

The best free video editing software

1. hitfilm express.

Hitfilm Express is one of the best value packages among the best video editing software, not just because it's free to start, but also because you can add on more features at reasonable prices. The program is compatible with both Macs and PCs, and also supports discrete Nvidia and AMD GPUs for threaded rendering and decoding.

Our favorite new tool of Hitfilm Express is auto-stabilization, which helps smooth out shaky footage. Other new features include WAV audio exports, a crop and pan/zoom effect, a GoPro FX reference effect, a color adjustment effect. While Hitfilm Express can be a little intimidating for beginners, we like its low cost to entry and affordable and scalable features.

2. DaVinci Resolve 17

A powerful pro-level, cross platform app, you’ll want to use DaVinci Resolve on a system with discrete graphics to get the most out of this video editor. The latest version of DaVinci incorporates Fusion, previously a stand-alone application, which brings with it four high-end video-production modules for editing, color correction, audio production, and video effects and motion graphics.

DaVinci is quite powerful, but has a bit of a learning curve. If its 256-page manual doesn't intimidate you, high-level enthusiasts will find a lot of tools at their disposal.

DaVinci Resolve is now on version 17, and the latest build includes a major upgrade to Fairlight, its audio editing workspace. It also gives free users the ability to collaborate on a project simultaneously — something that you previously had to pay for. Previous versions have included the addition of a Neural Engine that uses machine learning for such things as facial recognition and speed warp and it also has a new Cut Page, a streamlined interface for editors who need to turn projects around quickly.

3. Lightworks

If you want proof of the regard in which Lightworks is held, consider that the Pro version has been used to create multiple award-winning movies including Pulp Fiction, The Wolf of Wall Street and Jerry Maguire.

Even the free version has a wide range of fairly advanced tools, including some impressive audio-editing options, VFX, color adjustments and more. Against that, output maxes out at 720p — which may work if you're just making a home movie to share with relatives, but not for anything more serious.

Upgrade to the Pro version for $24/month or $240/year and you'll unlock 4K output plus a raft of other features including to the Boris Graffiti plugin, extra import features, advanced project sharing, timeline rendering and more. Or, for a one-off fee of $390, you can buy it outright and get all of the above plus Boris FX.

The interface may take a little getting used to compared to some programs, but it's still simple enough for a novice to master with a little help from the many tutorials and as a further bonus it works with almost every platform, including Windows, Mac and Linux.

4. Apple iMovie

Apple iMovie is the best video editing software for novice filmmakers on Macs, combining professional trailers and themes, abundant special effects and an easy-to-learn interface. In addition, it's free, so this is a great place to start, or if you need to do simple video edits. iMovie now supports 4K editing and sharing, as well as extended handling to video shot at 1080p and 60 fps. Recent updates tweaked the interface and added Touch Bar support for the latest MacBooks.

One of the other benefits of iMovie is that you can work on the same project on either a Mac laptop or desktop, then switch over to your iPad to continue your editing. It's a very handy feature for those who need the flexibility.

Read our full Apple iMovie review .

VSDC has a hybrid layout that incorporates controls for both creating and editing video projects, along with links to instructional videos, which are a big help when navigating through its interface. VSDC is a non-linear editor, which gives you some more flexibility when editing, but that means it has a bigger learning curve than more traditional video editing software.

VSDC is not bad for basic edits, but its interface has a learning curve, and it lacks a few popular features. VSDC is also a Windows-only program. If you upgrade to the pro version of VSDC for $20 (good for one year for two machines), you get additional features such as technical support, a full multimedia suite, advanced settings, hardware acceleration, sub-pixel resolution, a masking tool, chroma key functionality and a visible audio waveform. The latest version, VSDC 7.1, upgrades the GUI and LUT editors and adds new effects and custom shortcuts, among other things.

Shotcut is a free, open-source, cross-platform video editor for Windows, Mac and Linux that works with a variety of video resolutions and more esoteric codecs. The platform-agnostic Shotcut appeals to prosumer and enthusiast filmmakers with its broad format support and abundant audio and video effects and editing features. However, its learning curve might be a bit much for novice users, and it lacks an easy way to share videos to popular social media sites.

We like that Shotcut's interface starts out sparsely populated; you can add windows as you see fit, though it can get cluttered quickly. In addition to being cross-platform, Shotcut also works pretty well on systems that don't have discrete graphics, making it more accessible to those who don't have thousands to spend on the latest GPUs.

It's also regularly updated with new features. Recent updates included a 15-band (graphic) equalizer plus notes and voiceover options, so updates aren't just big fixes.

7. Movie Maker online

Movie Maker Online is just that: a web-based video editing program, which means that you can use it on any computer with a web browser. That gives it an advantage over some of the best free video editing software packages, as there's no need for you to have a super-fast machine or lots of hard drive space.

It also includes free music and stock photos you can add to your video, plus there's the ability to add transitions and some basic effects. But don't expect HitFilm levels of sophistication. Movie Maker Online's interface is a bit confusing — for instance, the timeline runs vertically rather than horizontally — and there are other restrictions, such as the fact that you can only export in MP4 format. The ads are intrusive, too, but for making short films without much fuss it's certainly worth a look.

How to choose the best video editing software for you

Free or Fee?

There’s no reason for the occasional video jockey to fork over any cash, as there are plenty of free apps available for both Windows and Mac. In fact we also have a list of the best free video editing software . But while the deciding factors for free and paid software may appear to be based on cold hard cash, that’s not the whole story.

People who are looking for a more powerful editor with a variety of built-in resources, responsive technical support and more would be better off dropping some cash on something from this list of the best video editing software.

However, there’s a third option: you can download software such as VideoPad or HitFilm (which offer all of the basics) for free, and then purchase additional features à la carte as your experience and needs grow.

How we test video editing software

In order to compile our list of the best video editing software, we tested more than a dozen programs — paid and free — on consumer Mac and Windows laptops for more than 100 hours, to see which are the best for editing, as well as sharing your videos with friends and family.

We evaluated all of the software based on functionality, ease of use, performance, sharing options and new features in the latest versions. We also judged the packages based on real-life uses for a number of categories, including best overall, best free app, best for beginners, best for YouTube maestros, best for Mac users and best for Windows platforms.

Performance results are important, but they’re not critical components of software evaluations, because depending on your hardware setup, your mileage will vary. By comparison, ease of use, interface and features carry more weight than export clock speed. Nonetheless, as a single measure among many, speed testing provides valuable comparative information.

As several of the programs on this page have been updated with newer versions since their initial review, we are currently in the process of re-testing them. At the same time, we are upgrading our testing platforms, from laptops with integrated graphics to those with discrete GPUs. This will better reflect the improvement in performance from apps that can take advantage of discrete graphics cards. Stay tuned for the results — we'll update this list of the best video editing software once we have them.

We have a wide range of buying guides to help you make the right decisions. If you're not keen on paying for your software just yet, why not read our guide to the best free video editing software . For workflows on the move, we also have a guide to the best video editing apps . If you're also looking to edit stills, make sure you check out our photography guides, including the best photo editing software , best free photo editing software and best photo editing apps . Snapfish review: You can do better

Xbox Cloud Gaming isn’t getting an official iPhone app, despite Apple’s rule change

  • richw46 I own both Adobe Premiere Elements 2022 and VisualStudio Pro 2022. Both are limited in what they can do and are really horrible, especially Visual Studio Pro. Support for both is as bad as the software. Visual Studio crashed my new Lenovo laptop so many times that Visual Studio stopped working, so I ripped it out and bought Premiere Elements 2022. It's not as functional as my very old version of Nero Platinum 11 I bought in 2011 (but that won't run on WIN10). Premiere has crashed a few times and sometimes the editing video window disappears but it does work. The sound disappeared after a crash and I had to disable the microphone input to get the sound to return. Neither software has much in the way of making DVD intro videos or very many sample templates. Editing of the templates is limited so not a lot of custom work. If all you want to do is make simple .mp4 videos then this will probably work. The biggest problem I've encountered so far is trying to import more than 69 (Apple) .mov HEVC files into a project in Premiere. The import throws an error saying I don't have the necessary HEVC files. However, I can open a new project and import the ones that were rejected in the other import. I reported this to Adobe support, spent 3+ hours in a chat session and all I got was them changing permission on a hidden system folder from TrustedInstaller to 'everyone' so they could delete ALL my HEVC files (instead of using the Uninstall feature in Apps & Features), which caused the software to stop importing any HEVC files and 4 other apps to crash and need to be reinstalled or repaired. They didn't have the Microsoft HEVC install (99 cents at Microsoft) to replace it so they downloaded a freebie from a site in Columbia SA. They have promised to call and connect me with a higher level techie. All of the .mov files were recorded using the same iPhone 12 with no changes to the default settings. This new Lenovo laptop has the necessary HEVC files, but Adobe support thinks the problem is with my laptop, not their software. Corel wouldn't refund my money and support replies to emails were up to 2 weeks apart. I finally told them to stop and leave me alone. I'm thinking about asking for my money back from Adobe now. My advice is to avoid both. I'm considering buying the Cyberlink Power Director 20 Ultimate now. Fingers crossed. Reply

3 in-demand freelance jobs that you can do from home—one can pay $500 for a few hours of work

More Americans are experimenting with freelancing, either as a side hustle or a full-time career.

The number of professionals freelancing in the U.S. hit an all-time high in 2023, increasing to 64 million people, or 38% of the U.S. workforce, from 60 million the year earlier, according to recent research from Upwork.

Businesses are increasingly relying on freelancers to save on headcount and real estate expenses, Yoav Hornung, head of verticals and innovation at Fiverr, tells CNBC Make It .

But the services businesses are hiring independent contractors for are constantly changing, Hornung says. For example: In recent months, Fiverr has seen a marked increase in requests for AI professionals, including video editors and prompt engineers, who can help businesses leverage AI technologies to be more efficient or profitable.

In addition to AI services, here are three of the most in-demand freelance services for 2024, according to Fiverr , including what professionals on the platform are charging for them. All of these gigs can be done from home and pay over $100 per project:

Video editing

Video editors work in post-production, assembling raw footage into finished packages using different software applications. Two kinds of video editing have seen "huge demand" as of late, according to Hornung: AI video editing and social media video editing.

Between January and July 2023, searches for AI video editors increased by more than 625% on Fiverr. These creators leverage AI to customize video backgrounds, generate voiceovers and enhance audio and visual elements, among other services.

Video editing for short-form content is another in-demand skill. "The increasing popularity of 'snackable' content in the form of Reels, Shorts and TikTok has spiked demand for freelancers who can make snappy, engaging content for brands," Hornung says.

Video editors on Fiverr typically charge at least $100 per project.

Social media management and content creation

Social media managers and specialists develop, edit and promote content across different channels for a client or organization to engage with and grow their audience.

The value of a strong online presence for brands and businesses has "never been higher," says Hornung, as more people — especially younger consumers — shop on social media platforms.

One skill that will be "especially valuable" for freelance social media managers to possess in 2024, he adds, is the ability to create content that feels "authentic and genuine" for clients as more consumers demand authenticity and transparency from the brands they support.

Social media managers and specialists charge at least $150 per project.

Mobile app development

Mobile app developers are software engineers who create apps for smartphones, tablets, computers and other devices. These professionals typically work alongside graphic designers and data scientists.

Globally, people recorded nearly 77 billion mobile app downloads during the first half of 2023, up 3% from 2022, according to data.ai , a data analytics tool.

Hornung points out that, on Fiverr, searches for "app development" have seen a consistent increase since the start of 2023. He explains that more brands are adopting mobile-first strategies to meet consumers' growing preference for interacting with businesses through their phones versus computers or in person.

Mobile app developers charge at least $500 per project.

If you're considering a freelance career or side hustle in any of these fields, it's not enough to learn the technical skills you'll need to do the job — what sets the most successful freelancers apart, says Hornung, is their soft skills and endorsements.

"Trust is king," he says. "Investing in soft skills such as communication and organization, and proof of how you've used these skills, can go a long way in establishing trust between freelance professionals and their clientele base."

Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect project-based payments for each freelance role.

The best free video editing software in 2024

These free video editors for youtube (and beyond) will get you the quality you need..

Hero image with the logos of the best free video editing software

Not everyone has the budget to spend on a premium video editing package. But if you're working within a tight budget or just starting out, there are plenty of free video editors to choose from. They range from accessible freebies to professional-level tools that are recognized as some of the best in the industry. There are options for Windows, Mac, and Linux, plus web apps for use in a desktop browser. That's all to say: you won't be left out just because you're looking for free.

Over the past 15 years, I've tried more video editors than I'd care to mention. I've used them for everything from slapping together iPhone videos for sharing on social media to producing commissioned product reviews shot on "real" cameras.

For this roundup, I started with more than 60 apps and put the best of them through their paces. What I ended up with is a shortlist of the best free video editors for YouTube and beyond.

The best free video editing apps

Adobe Premiere Rush for the best free video editing software for quick edits

Clipchamp for the best free web-based video editor

iMovie for the best free, simple video editor for Mac users

Kdenlive for a free, open-source, and cross-platform video editor

What makes the best free video editing software?

There are free video editors that hold your hand through the entire process, and there are more powerful apps that offer room to grow. At the very least, all of the apps on this list allow you to cut together clips and export a finished product at 1080p—with no watermark—in a format that's suitable for YouTube.

As I was testing all the free video editing apps I could get my hands on, I used the following criteria to help pick the best one for the job:

Editing features. The ability to easily arrange clips on a timeline is the bread and butter of video editing. Some apps take care of this for you with automatic editing options, while others leave you to your own devices with tools for splitting clips and adding markers. I also looked at more advanced editing features like chroma keying (green screen), multi-camera editing, video stabilization, and effects.

Limitations for free users. Only some of the editors featured in my shortlist are completely free—the rest are free versions of premium apps. I only considered apps that satisfied my criteria of being able to export at 1080p or better with no watermark and without any limits on the number of exports performed. The more generous the free version beyond that, the better.

Efficiency. I looked for performant apps with good options for exporting video. (Publishing directly to YouTube was a nice bonus but not essential.) Playback should be smooth, and video preview windows should ideally include toggles for quality settings to accommodate less powerful hardware. Web-based video editors should feel as close to a desktop app as possible and handle the editing workflow accordingly.

Learning and support. Ample support documentation, tutorials, and an active community of users can be huge, especially for free tools. For simpler tools, intuitive design and in-app guidance might be all you need.

Extras. Some video editors are complete suites that can handle effects, audio mastering, and even subtitling. Others offer integration with stock footage services and cloud storage providers. Though not essential, extras like these helped some video editing apps stand out.

To test these video editors, I cut together a selection of 4K HDR videos shot on an iPhone 13 Pro. I did simple edits, like adding clips to a timeline, splitting clips, adjusting playback speed, and adding transitions between clips; and I also dabbled in the more advanced options (where available), including chroma keying, syncing video and audio, and color correction. Finally, I made sure the exported files met my standards for quality—and didn't include a watermark.

In the end, I settled on the following free video editors that should satisfy a range of abilities across all three major desktop operating systems and the web.

The best free video editing apps at a glance

Best professional-level free video editing software on windows and mac, davinci resolve (windows, mac).

DaVinci Resolve, our pick for the best professional-level free video editing software on Windows and Mac

DaVinci Resolve pros:

A complete video editing suite for free

Plenty of support materials to help you learn

Upload directly to YouTube, with support for chapters, thumbnails, and titles

DaVinci Resolve cons:

Requires some commitment in order to realize its potential

May be overkill for simpler editing tasks

DaVinci Resolve isn't just the best free video editor on this list—it's one of the best video editors out there. Under constant development by video and editing equipment manufacturer Blackmagic Design, DaVinci Resolve has all sorts of help documentation. Plus, the editor's popularity has led to a deluge of user-generated tutorials and how-to videos, which makes learning even easier.

The most notable limitation in the free edition of DaVinci Resolve is the lack of 10-bit video export, which can be limiting if you're working with high dynamic range (HDR) video. Beyond that, DaVinci Resolve presents very few limitations for YouTube creators, and it empowers video editors with a robust suite of editing tools.

There are Cut and Edit interfaces for quickly cutting together clips or and building complex edits, in addition to dedicated areas for applying effects, mastering audio, and exporting your creations. The editor offers excellent multi-camera support, offering a convenient solution for syncing video and audio in order to quickly switch between perspectives. And when you're done, Resolve can upload directly to YouTube, complete with support for video descriptions and titles, adding chapters based on markers, and thumbnail image uploads.

Da Vinci Resolve free version limitations : No 10-bit video export; 4K at 60 frames per second export; fewer effects to choose from compared to $299 Studio version.

Best free video editor for quick edits

Adobe premiere rush (windows, mac).

Adobe Premiere Rush, our pick for the best free video editor for quick edits

Adobe Premiere Rush pros:

Offers automatic editing of clips in record time

Upload directly to YouTube when you're done

Adobe Premiere Rush cons:

Restrictive, single-track video editing workflow

No advanced tools, like chroma key or multi-camera workflows

Adobe Premiere Rush helps you edit videos in record time. Simply select your clips or images in the order you want them to appear, click Create , and Premiere Rush will edit your footage together for you. From there, you can make adjustments to the single video track and add music or sound effects to the three additional audio tracks before exporting.

To get this level of simplicity, you're sacrificing more advanced features. But if you're not too worried about things like chroma keying or having more control over your production, Premiere Rush is a breeze. You probably won't need to consult Adobe's tutorials and knowledge base, though they're there if you need them. The app is divided between Edit and Share interfaces, and you don't even need to log in with an Adobe account to edit or export video.

Connect your YouTube account, and upload directly to your channel in up to 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. If you want 4K uploads or access to Adobe's Auto Reframe tool for converting your video to vertical video aspect ratios, you'll need to cough up the $9.99 monthly fee. Serious creators will likely outgrow Adobe Premiere Rush as they seek out more advanced features, but even seasoned editors can appreciate how quick and easy it is to use.

Adobe Premiere Rush free version limitations: 1080p video export at 60 frames per second and no access to Adobe's Auto Reframe feature.

Best free web-based video editor

Clipchamp (web, windows, chrome).

Clipchamp, our pick for the best free web-based video editor

Clipchamp pros:

Multi-track video editing in a browser

Surprisingly good performance for a web app

Decent selection of free templates and assets to choose from

Clipchamp cons:

Web-based version requires Chrome or Edge

Windows app is just a wrapper for the web-based version

Clipchamp (which is owned by Microsoft) is a web-based video editor that works in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or in a browser wrapper on Windows 11. There are some inherent limitations in editing video using a web browser that even Clipchamp can't overcome. Success largely depends on the speed and reliability of your internet connection, and your computer's ability to handle a fairly demanding web app.

That said, Clipchamp might just be the best example of its kind—and I'm not just saying that because of its generous free option. It's a multi-track video editor, so you can drag different clips onto the timeline and layer them on top of one another. Make basic adjustments to your clips, change the playback speed, and add filters and effects using a simple interface that appears on the right side of the editor.

Clipchamp emphasizes simplicity, and that's to be expected from a web-based tool. You can use templates or an AI auto-editor to kickstart your edits, and you can produce content in vertical or square video formats with no problem. Export at up to 1080p directly to YouTube by connecting your account to Clipchamp.

You'll also get access to a surprisingly generous selection of free assets, like video transitions, background images, motion graphics, audio, and an auto-captioning tool for adding subtitles to your creations.

Clipchamp free version limitations : 1080p video export at 60 frames per second; limited access to included stock assets

Best simple and free video editing app for Mac users

Imovie (mac, iphone, ipad).

iMovie, our pick for the best simple and free video editing app for Mac users

iMovie pros:

Easy to use and simple to learn

Integrates with iCloud Photo Library for easy editing of footage shot on iPhone

Includes advanced features like chroma keying and stabilization

iMovie cons:

Seasoned editors will find iMovie's feature set limiting

Limited to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratios

As an Apple user, it's hard to ignore iMovie. The beginner-friendly video editor has pretty much everything you need to put simple videos together. It's easy to use even if you've never touched a video editor before. Tight integration with the Apple ecosystem makes importing iPhone videos a breeze, and you can even start your edit on the iOS or iPadOS version of iMovie and pick it up on the (superior) macOS version later.

Drag and drop clips from your media library into the multi-track editor, slicing and trimming as you go. Previewing your footage is as simple as gliding your cursor over the reel, which works almost instantaneously on modern Apple computers. Performance here is as good as Apple's professional editing solution Final Cut Pro, though to keep things accessible, the app is far more limited in terms of functionality.

Advanced features include chroma keying, video stabilization, noise reduction, and filters to instantly transform the look of your footage. Apple also includes some of the best-looking transitions, title cards, and motion graphics in the business. For simple edits, iMovie is a solid choice and includes a "YouTube and Facebook" export profile (though no in-app integration). The most limiting factor, outside of requiring a Mac, is being stuck in 16:9 widescreen format, with no support for vertical or square aspect ratio.

iMovie free version limitations: 16:9 widescreen format only

Best cross-platform, open source, free video editor (especially for Linux users)

Kdenlive (linux, windows, macos).

Kdenlive, our pick for the best cross-platform, open-source free video editor (especially for Linux users)

Kdenlive pros:

A powerful yet logical video editor that feels like a premium product

Includes advanced features, effects, and transitions

Wide range of export options, including H.264, HEVC, and AV1

Kdenlive cons:

Mac version has no native Apple Silicon version (runs via Rosetta)

GPU rendering is still in the experimental phase

There are quite a few open source and Linux-friendly video editors to choose from, but from what I tested, Kdenlive felt like the most complete package. The editing interface is uncomplicated but includes all the features you'd expect from a competent editor. There's a razor tool, markers, audio levels for monitoring, and tabbed panels that offer fast access to media and effects. There are even different editing modes for inserting or overwriting footage, and a multi-camera editing workflow.

I tested the Windows version, and the app performed well for the most part. Exports can be a little slow if the app doesn't support your GPU, but developers are working to expand support with more profiles. The app includes granular controls for video exports, and although there's no labeled option for YouTube, once you've dialed in your preferences, you can save your own profiles for future use.

You can learn how to use some of Kdenlive's more advanced features, like motion tracking and keying or creating animations, by reading the handbook or joining the support community.

Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of Kdenlive is how logical everything feels compared to other open source alternatives like Shotcut and OpenShot. On top of this, there's plenty of depth to explore if you're eager to learn.

Kdenlive's free version limitations: None

What video editing software do YouTubers use?

YouTube has built-in editing tools that can trim video and add an end screen. But if you're looking for something beyond the basics, you'll want a dedicated video editor.

If you're looking for a free and complete video editing package that you can grow into, you can stop your search with DaVinci Resolve. Though it may feel daunting to begin with, the many tutorials available will get you up to speed in no time. It'll take time to master, but you'll be able to accomplish far more in DaVinci Resolve than any other editor on this list.

Kdenlive is another solid choice if you want an editor that punches well above its weight. For Windows and Linux users especially, Kdenlive offers a simpler workflow than DaVinci Resolve without feeling too limited in terms of what you can achieve. Mac users can get similar results from iMovie, but performance will be leaps and bounds ahead on account of the app being optimized for the Mac platform.

Clipchamp and Premiere Rush are surprisingly similar, except that one works in your browser and the other runs locally. Both have similar limitations and optional assets, and both offer fast and simple editing regardless of your ability. I'd recommend Premiere Rush if your internet is slow and Clipchamp if you're comfortable with a browser solution.

The good news is: because these are all free video editors, you can take them all for a spin and see which one suits you best.

'The voice we woke up to': Bob Edwards, longtime 'Morning Edition' host, dies at 76

Bob Edwards started his career at NPR as a newscaster and then hosted All Things Considered before moving to Morning Edition . He's pictured above in 1989.

Bob Edwards, the veteran broadcaster and longtime host of Morning Edition who left an indelible mark on NPR's sound, has died. He was 76 years old.

NPR's Susan Stamberg says Edwards' voice became part of the morning routine for millions of Americans.

"He was Bob Edwards of Morning Edition for 24 1/2 years, and his was the voice we woke up to," she says.

When listeners first heard that voice, they might have imagined a figure of great authority, an avuncular newsman dressed in a pinstripe suit. But that was not Bob Edwards.

He was the consummate newsman

Margaret Low started at the company in 1982 as a Morning Edition production assistant. Now CEO of WBUR in Boston, she served for three years as NPR's senior vice president for news. She says Edwards always walked in the door right at 2:30 a.m., but he was casual.

"He was tall and lanky and wore jeans, and I think, if I remember right, was sort of pretty much always in an untucked flannel shirt."

Low says Edwards' seeming casualness belied a seriousness — about radio, about the news and especially about the art of writing. Like several of his contemporaries at NPR, he studied writing at American University with former CBS journalist Ed Bliss.

"He used to say that Ed Bliss sat on his shoulder as he wrote," Low recalls.

In fact, Edwards' Washington, D.C., office overlooked CBS News.

"I have this total image of Bob sitting in his office on M Street and it would be dark outside because it would be the middle of the night, and he faced the window over CBS News," Low says. "And he would be typing on his manual typewriter with these really, really big keys, and they would go click, click, click, and behind him you would hear ... the AP and Reuters wires."

Edwards, Low says, was the consummate newsman.

"He was a total news guy, and I think understood the news deeply," she says. "And in some ways he sort of set the bar for how we approach stories, because he would convey these stories with a kind of simplicity but also with real depth, and make sure that they somehow resonated. And that's lasted."

"As an NPR listener myself, I will always remember Bob Edwards' deep warm baritone and the confident ease of his delivery. ..." NPR President and CEO John Lansing says in a statement. "Bob Edwards understood the intimate and distinctly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums, and for decades he was a trusted voice in the daily lives of millions of NPR listeners."

"Mr. Cool" and Red Barber

Edwards started his career at NPR as a newscaster and then hosted All Things Considered with Susan Stamberg. She says their styles sometimes clashed.

"We had five good — if rocky — years together, until we sort of got one another's rhythm, because he was Mr. Cool, he was Mr. Authoritative and straight ahead. I was the New Yorker with a million ideas and a big laugh. But we really adjusted rather well."

Stamberg remembers Edwards for his humor, a quality that was often on display in his hundreds of interviews with newsmakers, authors, musicians and singers.

One of Edwards' longest-running radio relationships was also one of his listeners' favorites: his weekly conversation with sports broadcasting legend Red Barber.

Edwards eventually wrote a book about his radio friendship with Barber, the first of three he authored, including a memoir, A Voice in the Box: My Life in Radio .

Edwards' approach helped set the tone for NPR

Edwards left NPR after the company decided to remove him as host of Morning Edition . Though his many fans protested mightily, Edwards closed out his last show on April 30, 2004. He ended his tenure just as it started, by interviewing one of his radio heroes, Charles Osgood.

"You were the first person I interviewed for Morning Edition , and I wanted you to be the last," Edwards told Osgood on air.

Edwards went on to host his own interview show at Sirius XM Radio and continued to be heard on many public radio stations on Bob Edwards Weekend. But Margaret Low says his contribution to NPR will never be forgotten.

"He sort of set the tone and the bar for all of us," she says. "He understood the power and the intimacy of our medium and captured the attention of millions and millions of people who are still with us today."

'I Am Absolutely Terrified': OpenAI's New Project Isn't 'Broadly' Available Yet — But It's Already Setting Off Alarm Bells The company behind ChatGPT wants to "help people solve problems that require real-world interaction."

By Amanda Breen • Feb 16, 2024

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI's new text-to-video model, Sora, can generate videos up to a minute long based on any entered prompt.
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman crowdsourced prompt ideas on X to show off the technology.

Want to make a video of something that doesn't exist but don't have the technical skills to do so? Now, it doesn't matter — if you can type it, you can see it.

On Thursday, OpenAI revealed its new text-to-video model, Sora, which can generate videos up to a minute long based on any prompt a user enters into a text box, though the technology is not yet available to the public, NBC News reported.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showed off the technology on X, where he crowdsourced possible prompts and used them to generate several videos, including one of turtles riding bikes across the ocean and another of dogs podcasting on a mountain.

OpenAI said in a blog post that its goal is to train "models that help people solve problems that require real-world interaction," a prospect that's exciting for many AI aficionados. But it's concerning to people wary of the technology's unchecked power amid the proliferation of deepfaked media of celebrities, politicians and private figures online — and in an election year.

"I am absolutely terrified that this kind of thing will sway a narrowly contested election," Oren Etzioni, a professor at the University of Washington who specializes in artificial intelligence, told The New York Times . Etzioni is also the founder of True Media, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to identify disinformation online in political campaigns.

OpenAI said in a statement that it's "not making this model broadly available in our products soon" and that it's developing tools to determine when Sora generates a video and intends to embed metadata to flag the video's origin, per NBC News.

Three decades after the Soviet era, this Moscow street echoes what was.

And hints where russia is heading., welcome to tverskaya street.

MOSCOW — Thirty years ago, the Soviet Union ceased to be. The flag was lowered for the last time on Dec. 25, 1991. That moment still raises deep questions for the U.S.S.R.’s heirs: “Who were we as Soviets, and where are we going as Russians?”

Many of the answers can be found on Moscow’s main thoroughfare — named Gorky Street, after writer Maxim Gorky, from 1932 to 1990, and renamed Tverskaya Street, a nod to the ancient city of Tver, as the Soviet Union was awash in last-gasp reforms.

It was the Soviet Union’s display window on the bright future that Kremlin-run communism was supposed to bring. It was where the KGB dined, the rich spent their rubles, Vladimir Lenin gave speeches from a balcony, and authorities wielded their power against one of the most famous Soviet dissidents, Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

A view of Tverskaya Street from a top floor of the Hotel National in 1980, and in August. The street’s changes through the decades encompass the shifts in everyday life from the Soviet Union in the 1920s to Russia today.

In the 1990s, Tverskaya embodied the fast-money excesses of the post-Soviet free-for-all. In later years, it was packed with hopeful pro-democracy marchers. And now , under President Vladimir Putin, it is a symbol of his dreams of reviving Russia as a great power, reliving past glories and crushing any opposition to his rule.

Join a tour of Moscow’s famed Tverskaya Street.

Hotel National: Where the Soviet government began

The window in Room 107 at the Hotel National faces Red Square and the Kremlin. It offers a perfect view of Lenin’s tomb — fitting, since he was Room 107’s most famous guest.

The Kremlin was damaged during the Russian Revolution in 1917. So Lenin and his wife moved into Room 107 for seven days in March 1918, making the hotel the first home of the Soviet government.

The National, built in 1902 during the era of Imperial Russia, also accommodated other Soviet leaders, including Leon Trotsky and Felix Dzerzhinsky, chief of the secret police. The building continued to be used by the Soviet government as a hostel for official party delegates and was renamed First House of Soviets in 1919.

Guests can now stay in the same room Lenin did for about $1,300 a night. In more recent years, the hotel has hosted notable guests including Barack Obama (when he was a senator) and actor Jack Nicholson.

“This hotel feels a little like a museum,” said Elena Pozolotina, who has worked at the National since 1995.

“We have rooms that look onto Tverskaya Street, and we always explain to guests that this is the main street of our city,” Pozolotina said. “This corner of Tverskaya that we occupy, it’s priceless.”

Stalin’s plan: ‘The building is moving’

When Soviet leader Joseph Stalin demanded a massive redevelopment of Moscow in 1935, an order came to transform modest Gorky Street into a wide, awe-inspiring boulevard.

Engineer Emmanuel Gendel had the job of moving massive buildings to make way for others. Churches and monasteries were blown up, replaced by newspaper offices and a huge cinema.

The Moscow Central Eye Hospital was sheared from its foundation, rotated 97 degrees, jacked up, hitched on rails and pushed back 20 yards — with surgeons operating all the while, or so official media reported at the time.

In 1935, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin demanded the widening of the modest road, at the time called Gorky Street. Buildings were moved, as shown in this 1940s photo. Today, the road is a wide boulevard known as Tverskaya Street.

Gendel’s daughter, then about 8, proudly stood at a microphone, announcing: “Attention, attention, the building is moving.” Tatiana Yastrzhembskaya, Gendel’s granddaughter and president of the Winter Ball charity foundation in Moscow, recalls that Gendel extolled communism but also enjoyed the rewards of the elite. He drove a fine car and always brought the family the best cakes and candies, she said.

The largest Gorky Street building Gendel moved was the Savvinskoye Courtyard. The most difficult was the Mossoviet, or Moscow city hall, with a balcony where Lenin had given speeches. The building, the former residence of the Moscow governor general, had to be moved with its basement. The ground floor had been a ballroom without central structural supports.

Gendel’s skills were used all over the U.S.S.R. — straightening towers on ancient mosques in Uzbekistan, inventing a means to drag tanks from rivers during World War II and consulting on the Moscow Metro.

Like many of the Soviet Union’s brightest talents, Gendel found that his freedom was tenuous. His ex-wife was called by the KGB internal spy agency in 1937 and asked to denounce him. She refused, and he avoided arrest.

The largest Gorky Street building moved was Savvinskoye Courtyard, seen behind the corner building in this photo from 1938, a year before it was relocated; now, it is tucked behind No. 6 on Tverskaya Street.

“I believe he was not arrested and sent to the camps because he was a unique expert,” said Yastrzhembskaya. World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War, interrupted the Master Plan for Gorky Street.

Aragvi restaurant: A haunt of the KGB

In the 1930s, the head of the elite NKVD secret police, Lavrenty Beria, one of the architects of the Stalin-era purges, ordered the construction of a state-owned restaurant, Aragvi, to showcase food from his home republic of Georgia.

One night, NKVD agents descended in several black cars on a humble Georgian canteen in Moscow that Beria had once visited. The agents ordered the chef, Longinoz Stazhadze, to come with them. The feared NKVD was a precursor to the KGB.

Stazhadze thought he was being arrested, his son Levan told Russian media. He was taken to Beria, who said that he had agreed with “the Boss” (Stalin) that Stazhadze would run Aragvi. Stazhadze had grown up a peasant, sent to work in a prince’s kitchens as a boy.

The Aragvi restaurant was a favorite of the secret police after it opened in 1938. Nugzar Nebieridze was the head chef at Aragvi when it relaunched in 2016.

Aragvi opened in 1938. It was only for the gilded set, a reminder that the “Soviet paradise” was anything but equitable. The prices were astronomical. It was impossible to get a table unless the doorman knew you or you could pay a hefty bribe.

Aragvi, at No. 6 Tverskaya, was a favorite of the secret police; government officials; cosmonauts and pilots; stars of theater, movies and ballet; directors; poets; chess masters. Beria reputedly dined in a private room. Poet Sergei Mikhalkov said he composed the lyrics of the Soviet national anthem while sitting in the restaurant in 1943.

It was privatized in the 1990s and struggled, before closing in 2002. It reopened in 2016 after a $20 million renovation. But the new Aragvi closed abruptly in 2019 amid reports of a conflict between its owner and the building managers.

“You put your entire soul into cooking,” said the former head chef, Nugzar Nebieridze, 59, celebrated for his khinkali, a meaty dumpling almost the size of a tennis ball. He was devastated to find himself unemployed. But other doors opened. He now prefers to travel, giving master classes around Russia.

Stalin’s funeral: A deadly street crush that never officially happened

On March 6, 1953, the day after Stalin died of a stroke, an estimated 2 million Muscovites poured onto the streets. They hoped to catch a glimpse of his body, covered with flowers and laid out in the marbled Hall of Columns near Red Square.

Yulia Revazova, then 13, sneaked from her house with her cousin Valery without telling their parents. As they walked toward Pushkin Square, at one end of Gorky Street, the procession turned into a scene of horror. They saw people falling and being trampled. Some were crushed against metal fences. Valery, who was a few years older, grabbed Yulia by the hand and dragged her out of the crowd.

In March 1953, Soviet officials, including Nikita Khrushchev and Lavrenty Beria, followed the coffin of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in a processional in Moscow.

“He held my hand really tight and never let it go, because it was pure madness,” she recalled recently. “It took us four or five hours to get out of there. People kept coming and coming. I couldn’t even call it a column; it was just an uncontrollable mass of people.”

“I still have this feeling, the fear of massive crowds,” added Revazova, 82. “To this day, if I see a huge group of people or a really long line, I just cross the street.”

Neither Revazova nor her cousin knew about Stalin’s repressions.

“People were crying. I saw many women holding little handkerchiefs, wiping away tears and wailing,” she recalled. “That’s the psychology of a Soviet person. If there is no overarching figure above, be it God or Lenin, life will come crashing down. The era was over, and there was fear. What will we do without Stalin?”

Officials never revealed how many people died that day. The Soviet-approved archival footage of the four days of national mourning showed only orderly marches and memorials.

No. 9: The ruthless culture minister

The Soviet culture minister, the steely Yekaterina Furtseva, was nicknamed Catherine the Third, after the forceful Russian Empress Catherine the Great. Furtseva destroyed writers, artists or anyone else who challenged Soviet ideas. She lived at an elite 1949 apartment building for government officials at No. 9 — an ultra-prestigious address with a view of the Kremlin.

Furtseva, a former small-town weaver, made sure that No. 9 was only for the cream of party officials and other notables, such as famous Soviet actress Natalia Seleznyova, scientists, conductors and architects.

Riding the coattails of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Furtseva was the only woman in the Politburo and later became the Soviet Union’s cultural gatekeeper despite her provincial sensibilities. She once infamously mixed up a symphony with an opera, and critics were quick to notice.

In the late 1940s, No. 9 was being constructed; today, the building is home to apartments, shops and offices.

“She had little in common with the artistic leaders of her country except a liking for vodka,” Norwegian painter Victor Sparre wrote in his 1979 book on the repression of dissident Soviet writers, “The Flame in the Darkness.”

Furtseva was famous for previewing performances and declaring anyone even subtly critical of Soviet policies as being anti-state. Director Yuri Lyubimov described one such visit to Moscow’s Taganka Theater in 1969, when she turned up wearing diamond rings and an astrakhan coat. She banned the play “Alive,” depicting a cunning peasant’s struggle against the collective farm system. She “was livid, she kept shouting,” he told L’Alternative magazine in 1984. She stormed out, warning him she would use her influence, “up to the highest levels,” against him.

He was expelled from the party and in 1984 was stripped of his citizenship. She vehemently denounced Solzhenitsyn, and banned the Bolshoi Ballet’s version of “Carmen” in 1967 over prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya’s sensual performance and “un-Soviet” costumes that did not cover enough leg.

“The ballet is all erotica,” she told the dancer. “It’s alien to us.” But Plisetskaya, whom Khrushchev once called the world’s best dancer, fought back. The ballet went on with some excisions (the costumes stayed) and became a legend in the theater’s repertoire.

Furtseva was nearly felled by scandal in 1974, ordered to repay $80,000 spent building a luxurious dacha, or country home, using state labor. She died months later.

Where Solzhenitsyn was arrested

The Nobel Prize-winning Solzhenitsyn exposed the Soviet system’s cruelty against some of its brightest minds, trapped in the gulag, or prison camps.

Solzhenitsyn was given eight years of hard labor in 1945 for privately criticizing Stalin, then three years of exile in Kazakhstan, a Soviet republic at the time. His books were banned. After release from exile in 1956, he was allowed to make only 72-hour visits to the home of his second wife, Natalia, at 12 Gorky St., Apt. 169. Solzhenitsyn had to live outside the city.

“People knew that there were camps, but not many people, if any, knew what life was like in those camps. And he described it from the inside. He had been there himself, and that was shocking to a lot of people,” said Natalia Solzhenitsyna during a recent interview at the apartment, which became a museum in 2018.

“Many people say that he did make a contribution to the final fall of the Soviet Union.”

Solzhenitsyn, who died in 2008, called Russia “the land of smothered opportunities.” He wrote that it is always possible to live with integrity. Lies and evil might flourish — “but not through me.”

The museum displays tiny handwritten copies of Solzhenitsyn’s books, circulated secretly; film negatives of letters smuggled to the West; and beads made of compacted bread that he used to memorize poems in prison.

“He spent a lot of time here with his children. We were always very busy. And we just enjoyed ourselves — being together,” Solzhenitsyna said. They had three sons.

Because of KGB bugs, if the couple were discussing something sensitive, they wrote notes to each other, and then destroyed them. Two KGB agents usually roosted in the stairwell on the floor above, with two more on the floor below.

“The Soviet authorities were afraid of him because of his popularity among intellectuals, writers, people of culture and the intelligentsia.”

Her favorite room is decked with black-and-white photos of dissidents sent to the gulag, the Soviet Union’s sprawling system of forced labor camps. “It’s dedicated to the invisibles,” she said, pointing out friends.

Sweden planned to award Solzhenitsyn’s 1970 literature prize in the Gorky Street apartment, but the writer rejected a secret ceremony. A Swedish journalist in Moscow, Stig Fredrikson, was Solzhenitsyn’s smuggler. He carried Solzhenitsyn’s Nobel lecture on tightly rolled film disguised as a battery in a transistor radio, and he took other letters to the West and transported photos taped to his back.

“I felt that there was a sense of unfairness that he was so isolated and so persecuted,” Fredrikson said in a recent interview. “I got more and more scared and more and more afraid every time I met him.”

In 1971, the Soviet Union allegedly tried to poison Solzhenitsyn using a secret nerve agent, leaving him seriously ill. Early 1974 was tense. The prosecutor subpoenaed him. State newspapers railed against him.

The morning of Feb. 12, 1974, the couple worked in their study. In the afternoon, he walked his 5-month-old son, Stepan, in the yard below.

“He came back here, and literally a minute later, there was a ring at the door. There were eight men. They immediately broke the chain and got in,” his widow said. “There was a prosecutor in his prosecutor’s uniform, two men in plainclothes, and the rest were in military uniform. They told him to get dressed.”

“We hugged and we kept hugging for quite a while,” she recalled. “The last thing he told me was to take care of the children.”

He was deported to West Germany. The couple later settled in Vermont and set up a fund to help dissident writers, using royalties from his book “The Gulag Archipelago.” About 1,000 people still receive money from the fund, according to Solzhenitsyna.

When the writer and his wife returned to Russia in 1994, they traveled across the country by train. Thousands of people crushed into halls to hear him speak.

Solzhenitsyn abhorred the shock therapy and unchecked capitalism of the 1990s and preferred Putin’s tough nationalism. He died of heart failure at 89 in August 2008, five months after a presidential election in which Putin switched places with the prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, in a move that critics saw as a ploy to get around constitutional term limits.

No. 6: ‘Feasts of thought’

Behind a grand Stalin-era apartment block at 6 Gorky St. sits an ornate 1907 building famous for its facade, art nouveau glazed blue tiles, elegant arches and baroque spires. Once a monastery dormitory, it was a staple of pre-Soviet postcards from Moscow. But in November 1939, the 26,000-ton building was put on rails and pushed back to widen the street.

Linguists Lev and Raisa Kopelev lived in Apt. 201 on the top floor. Their spacious dining room became a favored haven for Moscow’s intelligentsia from the 1950s to the 1980s.

During the Tverskaya Street reconstruction, the Savvinskoye building, where Apt. 201 was located, was pushed back into the yard and blocked by this Stalin-era apartment block, shown in 1966 and today.

“People gathered all the time — to talk. In this apartment, like many other kitchens and dining rooms, at tables filled more often than not with vodka, herring and vinaigrette salad, feasts of thought took place,” said Svetlana Ivanova, Raisa’s daughter from another marriage, who lived in the apartment for nearly four decades.

Solzhenitsyn and fellow dissident Joseph Brodsky were Kopelev family friends, as were many other artists, poets, writers and scientists who formed the backbone of the Soviet human rights movement of the 1960s.

As a writer and dissident, Kopelev had turned his back on the Communist Party and a prestigious university position. The onetime gulag prisoner inspired the character Lev Rubin in Solzhenitsyn’s novel “In the First Circle,” depicting the fate of arrested scientists.

“The apartment was a special place for everyone. People there were not afraid to speak their mind on topics that would be considered otherwise risky,” Ivanova said. “A new, different spirit ruled in its walls.”

Eliseevsky: Pineapples during a famine

The Eliseevsky store at No. 16 was a landmark for 120 years — born in czarist Russia, a witness to the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, a survivor of wars, and a bastion during eras of shortages and plenty. It closed its doors in April.

Eliseevsky fell on hard times during the coronavirus pandemic, as international tourists dwindled and Russians sought cheaper grocery-shopping alternatives.

In the palace-like interior, two chandeliers hang from an ornate ceiling. Gilt columns line the walls. The front of the store, looking out at Tverskaya Street, has a row of stained glass.

Denis Romodin, a historian at the Museum of Moscow, said Eliseevsky is one of only two retail spaces in Moscow with such pre-revolutionary interiors. But Eliseevsky’s level of preservation made it “one of a kind,” he said.

The building was once owned by Zinaida Volkonskaya, a princess and Russian cultural figure in the 19th century. She remodeled the house into a literary salon whose luminaries included Russia’s greatest poet, Alexander Pushkin.

St. Petersburg merchant Grigory Eliseev opened the market in 1901. It quickly became a hit among Russian nobility for its selection of European wines and cheeses.

In 1934, the Eliseevsky store is seen next to a building that is being constructed; in September, the market, a landmark for 120 years, was empty, having closed in April.

Romodin said it was Russia’s first store with price tags. Before Eliseevsky, haggling was the norm. And it was also unique in having innovative technology for the time: electric-powered refrigerators and display cases that allowed goods to be stored longer.

Even in the Soviet Union’s hungriest years, the 1930s famine, Eliseevsky stocked pineapples.

“One could find outlandish delicacies here, which at that time seemed very exotic,” Romodin said. “It was already impossible to surprise Muscovites with wine shops. But a grocery store with luxurious interiors, and large for that time, amazed and delighted Muscovites.”

The First Gallery: A glimpse of openness

In 1989, in a dusty government office by a corner of Pushkin Square, three young artists threw off decades of suffocating state control and opened the Soviet Union’s first independent art gallery.

That April, Yevgeny Mitta and two fellow students, Aidan Salakhova and Alexander Yakut, opened First Gallery. At the time, the Soviet Union was opening up under policies including glasnost, which gave more room for public debate and criticism.

Artists were ordered to adopt the Socialist Realist style in 1934, depicting scenes such as happy collective farmworkers. Expressionist, abstract and avant-garde art was banned. From the 1970s, underground art exhibitions were the only outlets to break the Soviet-imposed rules.

“I just felt we had to make something new,” recalled Mitta, 58, who kept his interest in contemporary expressionism a secret at a top Moscow art school in the 1980s.

“It was like nothing really happened in art history in the 20th century, like it stopped,” he said. “The Socialist Realism doctrine was invented and spread to the artists as the only one, possible way of developing paintings, films and literature.”

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, artists had to “learn how to survive, what to do, how to work and make a living,” he said.

McDonald’s: ‘We were not used to smiling’

In the Soviet Union’s final years, a mania raged for all things Western. Estée Lauder opened the first Western-brand shop on Gorky Street in 1989, after meeting Raisa Gorbachev, the wife of reformist Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, in December 1988.

The Soviet Union’s first McDonald’s, located across Pushkin Square on Gorky Street, opened on Jan. 31, 1990 — a yellow-arched symbol of Gorbachev’s perestroika economic reforms. Pizza Hut opened later that year. (In 1998, Gorbachev starred in a commercial for the pizza chain.)

Karina Pogosova and Anna Patrunina were cashiers at the McDonald’s on opening day. The line stretched several blocks. Police officers stood watch to keep it organized.

“The atmosphere was wonderful. The first day I had to smile the entire day and my face muscles hurt,” Patrunina said. “This is not a joke. Russians do not smile in general, so we were not used to smiling at all, not to mention for more than eight hours straight.”

Pogosova and Patrunina were students at the Moscow Aviation Institute when they learned McDonald’s was hiring through an ad in a Moscow newspaper. Interview questions included: “How fast can you run 100 meters?” It was to gauge if someone was energetic enough for the job.

Pogosova and Patrunina are still with the company today, as senior vice president of development and franchising and vice president of operations, respectively.

“I thought that this is the world of opportunities and this new world is coming to our country, so I must be in this new world,” Patrunina said.

The smiling staff wasn’t the only culture shock for customers. Some had never tried the fountain sodas that were available. They were unaccustomed to food that wasn’t eaten with utensils. The colorful paper boxes that Big Macs came in were occasionally saved as souvenirs.

McDonald’s quickly became a landmark on the street.

“I remember very well that the street and the entire city was very dark and McDonald’s was like an island of light with bright signage,” Pogosova said. “The street started to change after McDonald’s opened its first restaurant there.”

Wild ’90s and a missing ballerina

The end of the Soviet Union uncorked Moscow’s wild 1990s. Some people made instant fortunes by acquiring state-owned enterprises at throwaway prices. Rules were being written on the fly. The city was pulsing with possibilities for those with money or those desperate to get some.

“It was easy to get drunk on this,” said Alex Shifrin, a former Saatchi & Saatchi advertising executive from Canada who lived in Moscow from the mid-1990s until the late 2000s.

It all was on full display at Night Flight, Moscow’s first nightclub, opened by Swedish managers in 1991, in the final months of the Soviet Union, at Tverskaya 17. The club introduced Moscow’s nouveau elite to “face control” — who merits getting past the rope line — and music-throbbing decadence.

The phrase “standing on Tverskaya” made its way into Russian vernacular as the street became a hot spot for prostitutes. Toward the end of the 2000s, Night Flight had lost its luster. The club scene in Moscow had moved on to bigger and bolder venues.

Decades before, No. 17 had been famous as the building with the dancer: a statue of a ballerina, holding a hammer and sickle, placed atop the cupola during Stalin’s building blitz.

The statue of a ballerina, holding a hammer and sickle, could be seen atop the building at No. 17 in this 1943 photo; today, the dancer is missing.

Muscovites nicknamed the building the House Under the Skirt.

“The idea was to have Gorky Street as a museum of Soviet art. The statues represented a dance of socialism,” art historian Pavel Gnilorybov said. “The ballerina was a symbol of the freedom of women and the idea that, before the revolution, women were slaves. It is as if she is singing an ode to the regime.”

The crumbling statues were removed by 1958. People forgot them. Now a group of Muscovites, including Gnilorybov, are campaigning for the return of the ballerina.

“It’s an idea that we want to give the city as a gift. It’s not political,” he said. “It’s beautiful.”

Pushkin Square: For lovers and protesters

Pushkin Square has been Moscow’s favorite meeting place for friends, lovers and political demonstrations.

In November 1927, Trotskyist opponents of Stalin marched to the 27th House of Soviets at one end of Tverskaya Street, opposite the Hotel National, in one of the last public protests against the Soviet ruler.

A celebration to say goodbye to winter at Pushkin Square in February 1987.

In December 1965, several dozen dissidents gathered in Pushkin Square to protest the trials of two writers. It became an annual event. People would gather just before 6 p.m. and, on the hour, remove their hats for a minute.

In 1987, dissidents collected signatures at Pushkin Square and other locations calling for a memorial to those imprisoned or killed by the Soviet state. The movement evolved into Memorial, a leading human rights group. Memorial was declared a “foreign agent” in 2016 under Putin’s sweeping political crackdowns.

Protests in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny were held at Pushkin Square earlier this year. And it is where communists and liberals rallied on a rainy September night to protest 2021 parliamentary election results that gave a landslide win to Putin’s United Russia party despite widespread claims of fraud.

Nearly 30 years after the fall of the U.S.S.R., Putin’s Russia carries some echoes of the stories lived out in Soviet times — censorship and repressions are returning. Navalny was poisoned by a nerve agent in 2020 and later jailed. Many opposition figures and independent journalists have fled the country. The hope, sleaze and exhilaration of the 1990s have faded. Tverskaya Street has settled into calm stagnation, waiting for the next chapter.

Arthur Bondar contributed to this report.

Correction: A map accompanying this article incorrectly spelled the first name of a former Soviet leader. He is Vladimir Lenin, not Vladmir Lenin. The map has been corrected.
