Samsung's customer hardware business containing TVs, fridges, and other advanced machines were additionally confronting challenges from Sony and LG.

India is significant for Samsung, thinking of the nation as the second biggest cell phone showcase on the planet today, and it is possibly the greatest undiscovered market for some advanced apparatuses. Remote control in hand in from of smart tv

In the early days of streaming, peripheral devices like Roku and Amazon AMZN Fire TV  were a necessity.

TV OEMs had no experience creating interfaces and it showed. What's more, they were saddled with underlying operating systems that didn’t allow for new apps or updates of existing apps.

TVs were expensive too—a new HDTV could easily run well over $1,000, and so consumers were not about to throw out their existing sets when they could just as easily pick up a streaming device for just $29 that gave them access to a whole world of streaming TV.

Two new studies, one from TVREV , sponsored by LG Ads, Samsung Ads and VIZIO and one from Magid , sponsored by VIZIO indicate that dynamic is rapidly changing however as the interfaces on smart TVs have vastly improved and everyone from Amazon to Comcast CMCSA is now trying to muscle their way into the smart TV market.

The Falling Price of Television Sets

Possibly the biggest factor in the resurgence of the TV has been the dramatic price drop over the past several years.

Consumers can now buy a very good 55-inch 4K TV for $500 or less. That makes the TV the least expensive screen in the house, as laptops and smartphones can easily cost $1,000 or more.

This is a huge shift and it’s why both the industry and consumers are so bullish on TV sets, a marked change from the days when it was assumed that by 2021 much, if not most TV viewing would be happening on low-priced mobile devices.

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.

A Better Interface Makes For A Better Experience

As both studies point out, the key to the dongle’s eventual demise is that the issues that once made it necessary no longer exist.

Smart TV interfaces are now as intuitive and easy to use as those found on peripheral devices and unlike their predecessors, they can be updated remotely with both new apps and new versions of existing apps. With so much change happening in the streaming marketplace these days, this is a top consumer priority.

The remote control devices on smart TVs have also caught up: the latest versions no longer feature bulky numerical keypads for entering cable channel numbers, but rather, have buttons to take you directly to your favorite streaming apps.

OEMs like LG, Samsung and VIZIO also now have their own free ad-supported streaming TV services (FASTs) with over one hundred linear-like channels featuring everything from news to comedy to children’s programming. This is helping to erase a key advantage the peripheral device manufacturers once had with The Roku Channel and Amazon’s IMDbTV, their own proprietary FASTs.

Consumers Like TVs Better Than Streaming Devices

One of the most interesting findings of the Magid study (you can find the initial summary of insights here ) is that consumers already prefer smart TVs to connected devices or dongles.

It’s not just one or two features either, but every category from inputs (34% to 15%) to picture quality (32% to 17%) to reliability (36% to 17%) and even remote controls (35% to 24%).

Many of the additional consumer complaints Magid found, such as the clutter caused by too many cords, stemmed from the fact that the peripheral devices are just that: peripheral, and thus require their own remote controls and power sources.

That’s why Roku has spent the past several years building up its share of the smart TV operating system market via deals with manufacturers like TCL and why Amazon, Walmart WMT and Comcast both recently announced their own licensing deals with OEMs, with Google GOOG likely not far behind.

The Problem With Licensing Deals

The problem with these licensing deals however is two-fold. On the one hand, you are at the mercy of the manufacturer. That means you have no control over the quality of their televisions and a negative consumer experience from a poorly made device can impact your brand.

On the other hand, licensing deals often entail a smaller number of TVs, which means it will not be easy to achieve any sort of critical mass.

Roku has been licensing its OS for several years now, and has thus been able to gain some traction, but newcomers will have a tough time breaking in. Among the barriers they face are an already crowded market and no real consumer advantage other than perhaps price.

That’s also going to make it tougher for them to strike deals with programmers and/or to be first in line for app updates.

The Advantages Of Owning Your Own Hardware

Now that TV sets have proven they’re not going anywhere, consumers are starting to look at the future possibilities for TVs, which center around the TV being the hub of the smart home. This is something various OEMs have been talking about for years, and it seems to finally be coming to fruition.

Consumers are up for it too. According to the Magid study, they are looking to the TV as a hub for a number of activities from viewing local weather and traffic reports to ordering dinner to betting on their favorite sports teams.

This is an area where companies that own their own hardware have a real advantage as they can integrate these features into their underlying software so that they all work together via a single interface—no switching inputs necessary. That gives them a huge advantage over peripheral devices and licensed operating systems in the years ahead.

A Few Words Of Advice

While things are indeed looking rosy for the smart TV OEMs, there are a few issues that still need solving.

First and foremost among these is password portability—finding a way (maybe a smartphone app) that allows viewers to quickly and easily port all of their various logins from one TV to the next.

The other is actual portability—giving viewers the opportunity to move the TV set experience to mobile and desktop. While most of the OEMs have taken steps to make this happen, stronger cross-device integration will not only improve the experience for consumers, it will help ensure the dominance of the smart TV OEMs for years to come.

Over the past few years, the Digital Lab evaluated and test a number of products and services informed by criteria, indicators and testing processes from the Digital Standard. To bring more transparency to the Digital Standard, we are launching a series of case studies aimed to highlight examples that will help clarify:

  • Problems & Context: What type(s) of problems with products and services does Consumer Reports look into for further testing and evaluation?
  • Processes & Methods: What processes or methods does the team use to evaluate and investigate products and services?
  • Impact: What type of impact do the product and service evaluations have on stakeholders like industry practitioners, manufacturers, and policymakers?
  • Using The Digital Standard: How was the impact of this work informed by the Digital Standard?

Our next case study covers Consumer Reports’ work on Smart TVs .

Samsung and Roku Smart TVs Vulnerable to Hacking, Consumer Reports Finds

samsung tv case study

Project timeframe

First test scores: February 2018 Latest update on test scores: May 2020

Smart TVs can monitor watching behavior: Smart TVs are sets that connect to the internet, making it easy to stream videos from services such as Hulu and Netflix. Most smart TVs are equipped with “automated content recognition” (“ACR”) that scans images on viewers’ screens and identifies the content by comparing it to its own known videos, shows, and movies. In doing so, smart TVs can generate a detailed log of what consumers watch — often without clear notice or permission. In addition, consumers often cannot buy a TV that is not smart these days, thus making them more likely to be creeped on by their TV manufacturer.

Data sharing to advertising companies: Other researchers have found much the same thing. In one study , researchers at Northeastern University and Imperial College London looked at smart TVs and other internet-connected devices and found that many of them sent data to Amazon, Facebook, and Doubleclick, Google’s advertising business. Nearly all the TVs sent data to Netflix even if the app wasn’t installed or the owner hadn’t activated it.

Many channels to share more data: Another study, by researchers at Princeton and the University of Chicago, looked not at TVs but at two popular set-top streaming devices from Roku and Amazon Fire TV. More than 2,000 channels were offered, and the researchers found trackers on 69 percent of Roku channels and 89 percent of Amazon Fire TV channels. The numbers are likely to be the same for smart TVs that have Roku or Amazon platforms built in.

Potential hacks or security issues: The smart TV itself may be subject to hacks or other security issues due to the connected nature of the product. Consumers often don’t know about how much data is collected about them while they use their tv and they often don’t know how or if they can change how much they share. Additionally, consumers have no way of evaluating the security of their smart tv. As part of one of our first case studies under the Digital Standard, we looked to evaluate smart tvs in order to respond to these two concerns.

Full testing: In February 2018, we performed our first ever tests on TVs using the Digital Standard. In 2020, we conducted another update on 2019 smart TVs in accordance with criteria of the Digital Standard . These generated new scores on the ratings site , incorporating data privacy and data security into our overall rating.

Qualitative interviews: In March 2020, we conducted a recent study with 16 volunteers around the country showing that people may not understand what information their TVs collect, or know about settings they can use to boost their privacy. The project was part of CR’s consumer experience and usability research program, in which we study how consumers interact with products to better inform our lab testing. In this case, a user-interface expert interviewed participants in an online environment as they clicked through screen shots taken from smart TV platforms . The participants helped us evaluate the type of smart TV platform they used at home, performing tasks such as finding privacy policies and the right settings for cutting down on data collection. Like laptops and smartphones, modern TVs collect consumer information, and the TVs come with privacy disclosures in their user agreements, which are typically displayed during the setup process. None of the volunteers in our study had read through an entire user agreement when they set up their TV.

Smart TV Digital Standard Test Protocol: Along with this, we published raw data from our Digital Standard testing including the workbook, test protocol, and test summary.

Output & Impact

Consumer Reports Article: Samsung and Roku Smart TVs Vulnerable to Hacking, Consumer Reports Finds . This February 2018 report highlighted that our tests found that millions of smart TVs can be controlled by hackers exploiting easy to-find security flaws — this includes Samsung televisions, models made by TCL, and other brands that use the Roku TV smart-TV platform. Moreover, the TVs collect detailed information on their users, which raises privacy concerns.

Some key findings shared in the report include:

Overcollection by design. The platforms are designed for people to race through their TV’s setup, agreeing to everything, and a constant stream of viewing data will be collected through automatic content recognition. The technology identifies every show you play on the TV — including cable, over-the-air broadcasts, streaming services, and even DVDs and Blu-ray discs — and sends the data to the TV maker or one of its business partners, or both.

A choice between your data or your internet. People can limit data collection, but they may lose functionality. For example, if people turn off ACR monitoring while still agreeing to the set’s basic privacy policy, that may keep them from getting recommendations (“You liked ‘Westworld.’ Have you checked out ‘Godless’?”) Even the basic privacy policies may ask for the right to collect information on your location, which streaming apps you click on, and more. If you say no to these basic policies, the sets revert to old-fashioned dumb TVs: without the ability to stream anything from Amazon, Netflix, or other web-based services.

All-or-nothing privacy policy. The Sony television was the only one that required people to agree to a privacy policy and terms of service to complete the setup of the TV. The set uses Google’s Android TV platform, and consumers have to click yes to Google agreements, even if they don’t plan to connect to the internet. That could be a frustrating thing to discover only after you’d bought the big-screen TV at the store, lugged it home, and maybe mounted it to a wall. Even though you can’t skip the Google privacy policy, you can say no to the user agreements from Sony itself and from Samba TV, a provider of ACR technology.

Additional awareness:

  • Home security buying guide: Consumer Reports created a home security buying guide outlining security camera options and what to look for when purchasing one.
  • FTC Conference: We presented the smart TV testing results at the Federal Trade Commission’s PrivacyCon and incorporated this in Congressional testimony in June 2018.
  • Video and Op-ed surrounding the Superbowl: We continued to promote the updates of this work by launching an awareness video around the time of the 2020 Super Bowl and published an op-ed on smart TV privacy for the San Francisco Chronicle just before the 49ers played in the Super Bowl.

Background of Samsung History and growth of Samsung as a global conglomerate

Samsung, founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul, started as a small trading company in South Korea. Over the years, it steadily expanded into various industries, such as textiles, insurance, and retail.

In the 1960s, Samsung ventured into electronics, marking the beginning of its transformation into a global conglomerate.

With a focus on technological innovation and a commitment to quality, Samsung rapidly gained recognition for its consumer electronics products, including televisions and appliances.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Samsung significantly diversified its business portfolio, entering the semiconductor, telecommunications, and shipbuilding industries.

This diversification strategy helped Samsung become a key player in multiple sectors, solidifying its position as a global leader. Notably, Samsung’s semiconductor division became one of the largest chip manufacturers in the world, supplying components to various electronic devices worldwide.

Samsung’s ascent continued in the 2000s, driven by its successful expansion into the mobile phone market. The introduction of the Galaxy series, powered by the Android operating system, catapulted Samsung to the forefront of the smartphone industry.

The company’s innovative designs, cutting-edge features, and aggressive marketing campaigns contributed to its rise as a major competitor to Apple’s iPhone.

With its global reach, Samsung has consistently ranked among the world’s largest technology companies, epitomizing South Korea’s economic prowess and technological advancements.

Overview of Samsung’s position in the technology industry

In the consumer electronics segment, Samsung has established itself as a dominant force. Its diverse product lineup encompasses televisions, smartphones, tablets, wearables, home appliances, and audio devices.

The Galaxy series of smartphones, in particular, has enjoyed immense popularity and has emerged as a fierce competitor to other industry giants. Samsung’s televisions are also highly regarded for their cutting-edge display technologies, such as QLED and MicroLED.

The company’s advancements in semiconductor technology have contributed to faster computing speeds, increased storage capacities, and improved energy efficiency.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Crisis

The Note 7 battery issue marked a significant crisis for Samsung, leading to a widespread recall of the flagship smartphone and causing considerable damage to the company’s reputation.

The crisis began in September 2016 when reports emerged of Note 7 devices catching fire or exploding due to faulty batteries. These incidents raised concerns about consumer safety and triggered a wave of negative publicity for Samsung.

Upon receiving initial reports of battery-related incidents, Samsung initially responded by issuing a voluntary recall of the Note 7 in September 2016. The company acknowledged the problem and expressed its commitment to addressing the issue promptly and effectively.

Samsung attributed the battery malfunctions to a manufacturing defect, specifically a flaw in the design that caused a short circuit.

To ensure customer safety, Samsung advised Note 7 owners to power down their devices and refrain from using them. The company swiftly implemented measures to exchange the affected devices, offering customers the option to either replace their Note 7 with a new unit or receive a refund.

Samsung also collaborated with mobile network operators and retail partners to facilitate the recall process.

In its initial response, Samsung took steps to communicate with customers and the public about the issue. The company published official statements expressing regret for the inconvenience caused and assuring customers of its commitment to resolving the problem. Samsung emphasized its dedication to quality and safety, promising to conduct thorough investigations and implement necessary improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Media coverage and public perception during the crisis

During the Note 7 crisis, media coverage played a significant role in shaping public perception and amplifying the negative impact on Samsung’s brand.

The crisis received extensive coverage from both traditional media outlets and online platforms, leading to widespread awareness and public scrutiny. Here’s an overview of media coverage and its influence on public perception:

The Note 7 crisis had significant financial implications for Samsung, resulting in substantial losses for the company. Here are some of the key financial impacts experienced by Samsung as a result of the crisis:

  • Recall and Replacement Costs: The recall and replacement process incurred significant costs for Samsung. The expenses involved in collecting and replacing over 2 million of Note 7 devices, including logistics, shipping, and refurbishment, were substantial. The costs also encompassed the testing and certification of replacement devices to ensure their safety. The total recall cost was estimated at $5.3 billion.
  • Decline in Sales and Market Share: The crisis had a detrimental impact on Samsung’s sales and market share in the smartphone industry. As consumer confidence in the Note 7 and Samsung’s brand reputation declined, potential buyers shifted their preferences to alternative smartphone options. The decline in sales of the Note 7, coupled with the negative impact on the perception of other Samsung products, led to a loss of market share for the company.
  • Stock Price Decline: The Note 7 crisis had an immediate impact on Samsung’s stock price. News of the battery issue, recalls, and subsequent negative media coverage led to a decline in Samsung’s stock value. Samsung shares fell approximately to 7 percent right after 2 months of the crisis.

Samsung engaged independent testing labs to conduct thorough assessments of the Note 7 batteries and verify the effectiveness of corrective measures. These labs specialized in battery testing and certification, providing expertise and unbiased evaluation of the battery performance and safety. Collaboration with independent testing labs helped validate Samsung’s efforts to address the battery issue and instill confidence in the effectiveness of the solutions.

The company also enhanced its customer support services, ensuring that customers could easily access assistance, product information, and technical support. These initiatives aimed to demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to customer satisfaction and support.

Launch of subsequent product lines and their impact on brand perception

At the more budget-friendly end are LCD and LED panels, which are known for their brightness and durability. LCD displays rely on fluorescent backlights, while LEDs use light-emitting diodes, typically delivering better picture quality. This process results in exceptional precision in lighting and contrast, outshining LCD TVs. OLED screens also maintain their clarity and color integrity at wider viewing angles. The downside is their higher price tag and lower brightness level compared to LCDs.</p><p>The latest innovation in TV technology is Mini-LED. This approach minimizes the LED modules used in backlighting LCD screens, achieving deeper blacks and enhancing overall picture quality. However, like OLED, Mini-LED technology comes with a higher cost.</p><p>Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses, catering to different preferences and budgets. Whether it's the cost-effectiveness and brightness of LCDs, the color richness of QLEDs, the contrast and viewing angles of OLEDs, or the deep blacks of Mini-LEDs, TV technology is available to suit various viewing needs.</p><h3 class="body-h3"><strong>Specs to Consider</strong></h3><h4 class="body-h4"><strong>Screen Size</strong></h4><p>You should pick the size of your TV based on the size of the room where you plan to set it up, and how far away you'll sit from the screen. If you have a large family room or basement, a 65- or 75-inch TV will offer a near-cinema experience. If you have a small apartment or plan to use your new TV in your bedroom, a 32- or 40-inch screen will suffice. Most people have the space to accommodate a <a href="">55-inch screen</a>, which is the average ideal size.</p><h4 class="body-h4"><strong>Resolution</strong></h4><p>One of the most important specifications to consider in a TV is its resolution, which is the number of pixels that make up the picture on a display. The more pixels, the sharper the image. While Samsung still sells some 1080p "Full HD" TVs, but <a href="">4K TVs</a> are the modern standard. Samsung also makes 8K TVs, which feature double the number of pixels of 4K resolution. However, 8K TVs are prohibitively expensive, and there is no readily available pipeline of 8K movies, TV or video games. Given that, we recommend steering clear of 8K for now.</p><p class="body-tip">More of Our Favorite TVs: <a href="">Best Smart TVs</a>, <a href="">Best LG TVs</a>, <a href="">Best Sony TVs</a></p><h4 class="body-h4"><strong>Display Technology</strong></h4><p>TVs that use LCD or LED panels of liquid crystal pixels are bright and durable and generally cost the least. An LCD display uses fluorescent backlights, while an LED screen uses light-emitting diodes for backlights. LED displays usually have superior picture quality. But LCD and LED panels often have limited viewing angles and don’t control light in the picture as well as other technologies.</p><p>Higher-quality TVs use quantum dots, sometimes also called QLED, that provide more comprehensive color ranges than you can get with most LCD panels. The technology uses tiny particles in different sizes that allow each size to emit a different color.</p><p><a href="">OLED TVs</a> use organic phosphors. Each pixel can generate its own light, which makes for better light precision and contrast compared to LCD TVs. OLED TVs can be seen from wider viewing angles than LCD TVs without reducing contrast or losing color. But OLED TVs can be quite pricey and aren’t as bright as LCD TVs. The relatively new and expensive Mini-LED technology shrinks the LED modules that provide backlighting to LCD screens, resulting in deeper black.</p><h3 class="body-h3">Audio</h3><p>Choosing a TV with a built-in audio system requires considering several factors to ensure you get the best experience for your needs. First, assess the sound quality. Look for TVs with high-fidelity speakers that offer clear and balanced sound. Brands often mention audio specifications like wattage and sound technologies like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, which indicate superior sound quality.</p><p>Room size plays a crucial role. For larger rooms, opt for TVs with more powerful speakers to ensure the sound fills the space. Conversely, a TV with less powerful speakers in smaller rooms might be just fine. Pay attention to the audio output ratings, usually measured in watts, to gauge the system’s power.</p><p>Another aspect is the sound features offered. Some TVs have built-in sound bars that provide a richer, more immersive audio experience. Bass enhancement, voice clarity, and virtual surround sound can significantly improve your viewing experience, especially for movies and games.</p><p>Connectivity options are also important. If you upgrade to a separate sound system, ensure the TV has options for external audio connections like HDMI ARC or optical out.</p><p>Finally, consider the type of content you usually consume. If you watch a lot of dialogue-heavy content, look for TVs with clear voice enhancement features. For action movies or gaming, a TV with good bass response and immersive sound technology will enhance your experience.</p><p>By focusing on these factors, you can choose a TV with a built-in audio system that complements the visual experience and immerses you in high-quality sound.</p><h3 class="body-h3">Connectivity</h3><p>When selecting a TV, connectivity can significantly enhance your viewing experience. Consider the types and number of ports available. HDMI ports are essential; they connect gaming consoles, sound systems, streaming devices, and Blu-ray players. The more HDMI ports a TV has, the more devices you can connect without needing to swap cables.</p><p>USB ports are also important. They allow you to plug in external hard drives or USB sticks to view your own media. A TV with multiple USB ports offers greater flexibility. Additionally, check for an Ethernet port for a stable wired internet connection which is beneficial for streaming high-definition content without lag.</p><p>Smart connectivity features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are now standard in most modern TVs. Wi-Fi enables you to connect your TV to your home network for streaming while Bluetooth allows for wireless connection to sound bars, headphones, or other Bluetooth-enabled devices.</p><p>You may also want to look for compatibility with smart home ecosystems like Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit. This integration lets you control your TV using voice commands or through other smart devices.</p><p>Lastly, consider future-proofing. Look for newer versions of HDMI (like HDMI 2.1) for compatibility with the latest gaming consoles and other devices. You can create a seamless and enjoyable entertainment setup by ensuring your TV has robust and versatile connectivity options.</p><h2 class="body-h2">How We Evaluated These Samsung TVs</h2><p>To make my recommendations, I spent a lot of time looking closely at Samsung TVs, focusing on their size, resolution, cost, and quality. Besides studying their specs, I checked out these TVs in person to see how they stack up against others in the same price range.</p>

Samsung, the Korean tech giant, is well known for its 1) phones , and 2) broad range of TV technologies and types. Take its QLED TVs, famed for vivid colors and Quantum Dot technology, which help deliver a vibrant picture ideal for movie nights and gaming sessions.

Then there are the 4K Neo QLED models—TVs that feature Mini-LED backlighting for deeper contrasts and more immersive picture quality. And if money is no object, an 8K Neo QLED model has the ultimate resolution and image clarity.

If you want to watch outdoors , there are TVs for that, too, thanks to Samsung’s Terrace series. Featuring weather-resistance and enhanced brightness, these TVs bring high-quality visuals to your backyard, patio, or deck , even in bright daylight.

With many panels to gaze upon, we’ve picked the best Samsung TVs for different uses and highlighted some important things to consider before buying.

The Best Samsung TVs

  • Best Overall: Samsung S95C
  • Best Budget: Samsung CU8000
  • Best Outdoor TV: Samsung The Terrace LST9C
  • Best Design: Samsung The Frame LSO3B
  • Best for Movies: Samsung QN95C Neo QLED 4K HDR Smart TV

What to Consider

Why buy a samsung tv.

Many Samsung panels offer a blend of value, features, and picture quality. While other brands, such as Sony or Hisense, might lean into putting all their eggs into build quality or affordability, Samsungs do it all and do it well.

Performance-wise, mid to high-range Samsung TVs fare well in various environments. They often feature excellent contrast levels, brightness, and vibrancy, making many excellent for movies. High refresh rates and HDR support for immersive brightness are also great features for gamers.

However, some models offer better value for the money than others—expect a sizable price jump for its premium line, like the Neo QLED. Sadly, its budget range is less diverse and broad than its mid or premium lines.

Samsung TVs use an OS called Tizen, which is comparable to LG’s WebOS and Roku TV. Tizen is easy to use, responsive, and fairly smart. You navigate across most apps using a horizontal bar that pops up when you press the Home button on your remote. Samsung TVs also feature voice control and online search via the remote’s onboard mic.

Speaking of remotes, most mid- to high-range Samsungs come with an advanced SolarCell model, charging via indoor light and USB-C, so no more fiddling around with AAA batteries. It’s a wonderfully simple remote, though some may miss the larger, more traditional numeric style.

Smart Assistant

Lastly, Bixby smart assistant lets you use your TV as a smart hub with other Samsung smart devices. Ever wanted to check on the progress of your washing machine or control the lights in your home with your TV? You can. It’s a great feature, particularly if you’ve already invested in Samsung’s diverse ecosystem of smart home products.

Most Samsung television models work with Alexa if you’re an Amazon user. They don’t support Apple HomeKit, though AirPlay is possible with most TVs. While some models have worked with Google Assistant in the past, Google will no longer be available on Samsung TVs starting March 1, 2024, due to a policy change.

Panel Technology

Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses, catering to different preferences and budgets.

At the more budget-friendly end of the spectrum are LCD and LED panels, known for their brightness and durability. LCDs rely on fluorescent backlights, while LEDs use light-emitting diodes, resulting in better picture quality. However, LCD and LED screens often suffer from limited viewing angles (if you’re sitting too far from center, the picture isn’t as good) and less effective light control within the image, most notably falling short of delivering true blacks.

Stepping up in quality, Quantum Dot or QLED technology offers a significant enhancement. These TVs employ tiny particles, each a different size, that emit a unique color, leading to a much broader and more vivid color range than traditional LCD panels. That said, it has much more in common with traditional LCD screens rather than newer OLED variants. Samsung exclusively markets many of its TVs as 4K or 8K QLED, though other manufacturers offer their version of this panel tech. Overall, QLEDs are less consistent than OLEDs, providing quality blacks and contrast levels. However, inch for inch, they offer bigger and brighter screen sizes for less. Plus, the more you’re willing to spend on a QLED, the narrower the performance gap.

Organic light-emitting diode technology (OLED), represents another leap forward using organic phosphors where each pixel produces its own light. This process results in exceptional precision in lighting and contrast, outshining LCD TVs. OLED screens also maintain their clarity and color integrity at wider viewing angles. OLED TVs are often ludicrously thin and don’t require separate backlighting panels. The downside is their higher price tag and lower brightness level than LCDs. Be careful of screen burn-in, which we’ll get into at the end of this article.

The latest innovation in TV technology is Mini-LED. This approach minimizes the LED modules used in backlighting LCD screens, achieving deeper blacks and enhancing overall picture quality. However, like OLED, Mini-LED technology comes with a higher cost.

Screen Size

The size of your TV should be proportionate to the size of the room it’ll live in and how far away you’ll sit from the screen. A 65- or 75-inch TV will offer a near-cinema experience if you have a large family room or basement. If you have a small apartment or plan to use your new TV in your bedroom, a 32- or 40-inch screen will suffice. A typical family house should have the space to accommodate a 55-inch screen , which is the average, ideal size.

According to Samsung’s guide to television sizing , you should aim for 40 percent of your field of view to be taken up by your screen. The field-of-view distance is calculated by taking your intended screen size and multiplying it by 1.2. For example, a 55-inch television requires sitting 66 inches away.

TV resolution, the number of pixels that make up the picture on a display, is one of the most important specs to consider. The more pixels, the sharper the image. Samsung still sells some 1080p Full HD TVs, but 4K TVs are the standard. Samsung also makes 8K TVs, which feature double the pixels of 4K TVs. However, 8K TVs are prohibitively expensive, and there’s no available pipeline of 8K movies, shows, or video games. That said, advanced Samsung TVs can upscale native HD or 4K content into 8K, with excellent results. Due to the cost, many people can do fine without 8K.

Look for TVs with high-fidelity speakers that offer clear and balanced sound. Brands often mention audio specifications like wattage and sound technologies like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, which indicate superior sound quality.

Room size also plays a crucial role. For larger rooms, opt for TVs with more powerful speakers to ensure the sound fills the space. Conversely, a TV with less powerful speakers in smaller rooms might be just fine. Pay attention to the audio output ratings, usually measured in watts, to gauge the system’s power. More wattage equals more robust sound.

Another aspect is sound features. Some TVs have built-in soundbars that provide richer, immersive audio. Bass enhancement, voice clarity, and virtual surround sound can significantly improve your viewing experience, especially for movies and games.

Connectivity options are also important if you upgrade to a separate sound system. Ensure the TV has options for external audio connections like HDMI, ARC, or optical out. Every Samsung on our list is Bluetooth-compatible.

The variety and number of available ports can significantly enhance your viewing experience. HDMI ports are essential; they connect gaming consoles, sound systems, streaming devices, and Blu-ray players. The more HDMI ports a TV has, the more devices you can connect without swapping cables.

Lastly, consider future-proofing. Look for newer versions of HDMI (like HDMI 2.1) for compatibility with the latest gaming consoles and other devices. You can create a seamless and enjoyable entertainment setup by ensuring your TV has robust and versatile connectivity options.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, allowing TVs to drastically enhance contrast levels and colors. This makes games and movies appear much more vibrant and detailed. However, you still need HDR-enabled content for this to be compatible—you can find them in newer games and streaming services like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Max, while Netflix charges a premium subscription cost for its HDR content. Various HDR methodologies tout different ways of delivering these boosted effects, including HDR+ and HDR10, but note that Samsung TVs do not support the Dolby Visions standard.

With this screen cranked up to 11, it somehow lacks nuance in its picture quality, not quite hitting the mark in minor shading or gentler color grades. And as you might expect, you’d need a separate soundbar to ensure equal audio footing with its impressive visuals.

That said, it’s still a fantastic panel for contrast and brightness, and it handles gaming exceptionally well, with a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) that automatically matches the frame rate of your game, leading to smoother gameplay. We may have said most people won’t need an 8K TV at this juncture as there are so few supported media types, and we stand by that.

However, the QN900C’s ingenious upscaling feature utilizes AI to bump up the pixel count to incredible levels. It’s a wonderful function too, particularly with 4K content—edges and details appear convincing and true to life. That’s thanks to its Quantum Neural Processor, which uses AI and up to 64 neural networks to handle the conversion. Its design is gorgeous, with an edge-to-edge frameless panel backed by a metallic chassis. You do need to find space for its separate connection box, however.

8) Wondering About Burn-In and Bezels? Expert Sascha Brodsky Has Answers

What's the perfect TV size?

Finding the perfect TV size depends on the size of your room and how far you're sitting from the screen. A good rule of thumb is that your viewing distance should be about 1.5 to 2.5 times the TV's diagonal measurement.

For a 50-inch TV, this means sitting between 75 and 125 inches away. This range offers a comfortable and engaging viewing experience. Ultimately, it's about balancing comfort, space, and personal preference to find your ideal TV size.

How long should my TV last?

Your TV can be a dazzling centerpiece in your home for about 7-10 years, provided it's treated right. The brand and type of TV, whether it's LED, LCD, or OLED, play a big role in its lifespan.

Regular use is fine, but remember, marathon sessions can take a toll. To keep it shining bright for years, maintain moderate settings and ensure your TV is well-ventilated. As we all know, technology moves fast so the allure of newer models with advanced features might catch your eye long before your current set dims.

What about TVs with voice assist functions?

These offer a streamlined and interactive viewing experience. Featuring compatibility with popular voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Siri, these smart TVs allow you to operate them through simple voice commands.

You can switch channels, modify the volume, search for shows, or even manage other smart devices in your home without needing a remote. This functionality is especially beneficial for individuals with mobility challenges or when their hands are busy.

Bezel-less or not?

Choosing a bezel-less TV comes down to aesthetics and your desired viewing experience. Bezel-less designs offer a sleek, modern look, making the screen appear larger and more immersive. This edge-to-edge display enhances the viewing experience, especially for cinematic content, as it minimizes visual boundaries.

However, TVs with thin bezels can be more fragile and may require careful handling. While the visual appeal of a bezel-less TV is undeniable, consider the practical aspects like placement, handling, and your room's aesthetics.

What is burn-in, and how can I avoid it?

Burn-in is a permanent display issue where remnants of static images linger on the screen, a common concern with OLED TVs. It occurs when the same image, like a channel logo or a game's HUD, is displayed for long periods, causing uneven wear of the screen's organic pixels.

To avoid it, vary the content you watch and use features like pixel shifting or screensavers, which move static images slightly to prevent prolonged exposure. Also, reduce brightness and contrast settings as high levels accelerate burn-in. Most modern TVs have built-in settings to minimize this risk, ensuring a longer life for your screen.

Case Study: A Perfect Union Between Samsung Frame TV and MantelMount

Alpharetta, Ga.’s Home TheaterWorks creates a flush-mount solution for Samsung’s popular TV and MantelMount’s versatile wall mount.

By RS Staff

There is an ongoing debate between interior designers, techies, homeowners, and builders about whether you should mount a television above a fireplace. One of the main arguments is that, aesthetically, it’s a design flaw to make the television the focal point of a room. Part of the reasoning behind this attitude is that the television, when not in use, is simply a blank screen offering no visual appeal.

Enter The Frame TV by Samsung . When not in operation, The Frame TV allows users to switch to Art mode and display personal photos or works of art on the screen. When the television is not in use, it is no longer a lifeless screen but, rather, a piece of artwork — personally selected by the homeowner — that will brighten up and beautify the installation.

MantelMount and Samsung Frame TV flush against wall

Seth Herold of Alpharetta, Ga.’s Home TheaterWorks has experience with The Frame TV. Herold — whose company specializes in the installation of smart devices including audio/video equipment, security systems, lighting, and motorized shades — recently mounted his first Frame TV. (The house in which The Frame was being mounted had been gutted as the result of a fire, and Herold was performing the installation as part of the rebuild.)

Herold mounted the customer’s Frame TV above their fireplace, which is a fairly popular mounting option, as the wall area above the fireplace is often the room’s only viable wall space.

If the mantel is low enough, the television can be mounted directly onto the wall. However, if the mantel is above a certain height, mounting The Frame TV above the fireplace will put it too high for optimal viewing (eye level is considered best). Not only can the viewer suffer neck strain, but it typically results in a loss of the best picture resolution.

MantelMount and Samsung Frame TV in lowered position

In this customer’s case, The Frame TV would be too high for ideal viewing keeping it slightly above the desired eye-level position. Consequently, a mount with the capability for vertical movement would be required to create the perfect viewing experience and best picture quality.

Enter the MantelMount MM860 motorized drop-down and swivel TV mount . The MM860 not only allows Herold’s customer to drop The Frame TV down to a more watchable height (it offers a 30-inch maximum drop), but it adds to the overall aesthetic of the installation. What’s more, the MantelMount’s MM860 provides the customer with a list of features that increase both convenience and safety, including:

  • Simultaneous drop and swivel that allows the mount to lower and swivel the TV in one fluid motion
  • Control through most popular home automation systems as well as the included remote
  • Heat sensors that automatically raise The Frame back to its resting position if the temperature reaches 110 degrees
  • Plug & play networking allows for quick and easy programming

Home TheaterWorks worked directly with the builders as they were framing the new structure. According to Herold, his team wasn’t going to be installing The Frame TV for another five months, but they put together a game plan to ensure they were all on the same page.

The installation of the MM860 turned out well, no surprise given that Herold had installed at least 10 of them prior to the current project. However, the connection between The Frame TV and the mount left about an inch-and-a-half gap between the back of the television and the wall after Herold mounted it.

“The customer’s main objective is that, in the ‘up’ position, The Frame TV needs to look like a picture, with no gap between the back of the television and the wall,” says Herold. “They’ve bought a very high-end television and, understandably, they want the install to be perfect down to the last detail. Having the television completely flush to the wall falls into that category.”

MantelMount and Samsung Frame TV at eye level

Herold met with the builder and relayed the plan to build out a recess and to frame out the area behind the bracket deep enough to accommodate The Frame TV’s tricky back mount. Inside the cutout Herold also employed an oversized recess box to house the mounting arm of the MM860.

“We consulted with the engineers at MantelMount and figured out a way to make an opening big enough to accept the backing of the MM860 so it would pull right up to the wall,” Herold states. “In the future, we’ll know what to tell a builder if we’re putting in a Frame TV on a MantelMount unit.”

In fact, armed with the knowledge of how to execute a perfect Frame TV install using the MM860, Herold says that Home TheaterWorks has sent out quotes for a number of similar projects.

Herold adds that, although the installation could have been accomplished without a MantelMount motorized mount — or even a manual pulldown version — the customer had fallen in love with the automated device.

“The mantel wasn’t very high, and it’s possible that the television could have been mounted directly to the wall,” he says. “But it would not have been perfectly at eye level and would have impacted both comfort and picture quality, though to a lesser degree than other installations. But regardless of the need, the customer had discovered the MantelMount product and felt they absolutely had to have it. There was a coolness factor that really struck him.”

Of course, by using the MantelMount, the positioning of The Frame TV during viewing is now perfect, not merely “close.” What’s more, the swivel capability of the mount is quite useful, as the room has two separate seating areas in the television room; depending on where the viewer is seated, the mount automatically lowers and swivels to accommodate their sightlines.

Herold sang the praises of the MantelMount, indicating his belief that The Frame TV and MantelMount make a great match. “There’s no question that The Frame TV has some unique mounting issues, regardless of which company’s mount is used,” he says. “But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the MM860 is a great fit for The Frame TV and will result in a slick installation that gives the customer all kinds of control.”

The combination of The Frame TV and MantelMount has not only made Herold a believer but a buyer as well.

“I’ve got a Frame TV over each of the two fireplaces in my own home,” Herold concludes. “Now that I’ve seen what the MantelMount unit can do, I’m going to be using it to mount both televisions.”

to support millions of viewers

Samsung Electronics (Samsung) is the world’s largest television manufacturer. To meet customer demand, the company decided to build on Amazon Web Servces (AWS) and used Amazon Chime SDK to create a new live television chat service.

The application increases viewer engagement by giving customers the ability to view chat interfaces on their smart television and write messages using their remote control or mobile phone.

Opportunity |  Meeting the Demand for Interactive Chat Features

Samsung, based in Korea, is a global electronics company and the world’s largest manufacturer of televisions and smartphones. Samsung produces a range of consumer and industry electronics, including appliances, digital media devices, semiconductors, and memory chips. The company’s mission is to create a better future for consumers by using sustainable products.

In recent years, Samsung has seen rising demand from consumers for easy-to-use interactive chat features during television shows and movies. Through its own analysis, the company discovered that customers are seeking a sharing experience built into the television to make watching shows more engaging overall. To meet this customer demand, Samsung wanted to develop a new solution that would integrate messaging capabilities into live chatting. The company also wanted to implement a solution quickly to meet the needs of its customers.

With AWS, we were able to quickly roll out Live Chatting, the world’s first live television and text chat service.”

Seokjae Oh Leader of the Platform Service, Samsung Electronics

Solution |  Creating an Interactive Chatting Solution Using Amazon Chime SDK

To address its business requirements, Samsung wanted to use a cloud-based solution for scalability and agility. Because the company had previous experience running workloads on AWS, it selected AWS again due to the strong support it had already received.

The Samsung Visual Display Division used the Amazon Chime SDK , a service that enables embedded real-time communication, to create a new live chatting solution. The Amazon Chime SDK makes it easy for developers to add real-time voice, video, and messaging powered by machine learning into their applications. With Amazon Chime SDK, as well as AWS developer tools and databases, Samsung built a live television chat service on AWS, with messaging capabilities integrated into live chatting functionality.

By working closely with AWS teams during initial design discussions right through to development, the service benefitted from a short development timeframe. “With AWS, we were able to quickly roll out Live Chatting, the world’s first live television and text chat service,” says Seokjae Oh, platform service part lead of the visual display division at Samsung Electronics. Without collaborating with AWS teams, Samsung would have needed additional internal resources to create its new messaging services.

Taking advantage of this solution, Samsung customers can view chat interfaces on their Samsung smart television, write messages using their remote control or mobile phone, and chat by converting micro voice messages to text via the same devices. Interactive chat functions include emojis and recommended messages based on program genres. Additionally, the live chatting solution can scale automatically to support millions of users by relying on Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), a fully managed container orchestration technology.

Outcome |  Giving Television Viewers a More Interactive and Engaging Experience

Samsung has combined messaging and entertainment to give viewers a way to share their thoughts, reactions, and emotions during live television shows. The AWS-powered live chatting technology helps users watching the same program to enter and chat in a single chat room, interacting with each other with messages displayed in a panel on the right side of the television screen. Interactivity across all viewing networks and cross-device connectivity makes text chat easy and accessible to South Korean viewers. “Samsung Electronics is making television more engaging with cloud technology,” said Kee Ho Ham, managing director of AWS Korea. “Using AWS, Samsung Electronics brings interactive live television chat services to global customers for the first time.”

Using Amazon ECS to facilitate automatic scalability, the Samsung live chatting solution scales across multiple channels during spikes in demand from larger groups of viewers during major sports events or popular television show finales. “Viewers across South Korea are looking for new ways to engage with their favorite TV programs. With the agility of AWS, we can scale this new Samsung viewing experience to customers countrywide, driving brand loyalty,” Ham says.

Samsung is currently working to commercialize its new service to target the wider Korean market and continues to work with AWS to improve maintenance and service functions. “We look forward to helping Samsung innovate rapidly to meet evolving demands for new entertainment services,” says Ham.

[CES 2012] Samsung Free the TV Challenge 2011 Finalists Announced

Samsung Electronics today announced the finalists of the Samsung Free the TV Challenge 2011 , the second annual contest that encourages developers to create apps that delight users with seamless, multimedia experiences on the largest screen in the home.

This year’s participants were invited to submit converged apps that enable interactivity between Samsung Smart TV and multiple screens such as smartphones, tablets or notebooks. Each app is evaluated based on the overall visual appeal of the app on each screen, the quality of the idea and the functional implementation. Winners will be announced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 10-13, 2012 and stand to win a prize pool of US$225,000.

The finalists of the 2011 Challenge are:

FREQSHO – music fans can create their own music channel to stream music from any artist using a smartphone, tablet or TV. An easy-to-use search engine helps users quickly find their favorite artists and social connectivity allows them to follow the latest artist information and tweets in real-time.

Let’s Play Stop – an interactive word game that challenges players to come up with words that correspond to a random letter in five categories: country or city, body parts, fruits, colors and animals. The first person to complete the round with as many unique words as possible wins.

Samsung Apps is the world’s largest and most popular HDTV-based application store . Consumers can choose from more than 1,000 apps worldwide that offer a wide array of interactive and customized content across categories such as video, music, news, sports, fitness and more. Free the TV Challenge finalists will also have the opportunity to make their app available through Samsung Apps, which currently averages 50,000 app downloads daily.

The winning Free the TV Challenge app, together with finalist apps, may be viewed at Samsung’s booth #12004 at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Enabling the Development of Compelling Cross-Device Solutions with World-Class Tools

Converged applications create a richer, more engaging experience across the TV and another device such as a phone, tablet or computer. These apps may be classified as:

•  Controller Apps that enable a second device to control an app on the TV •  Companion Apps that use a second device to provide additional information (eg. via web sites and social media sites) that is synchronized to and supplements what is shown on the TV itself; and •  Interactive Apps that optimize a second device for a secondary display; for example, allowing users to pause content on the TV and resume playback on the other device.

To further spur innovation on the industry’s preferred TV apps platform, Samsung reiterated its commitment to provide applications developers with the tools and information needed to build new, interactive experiences for the TV, even as the TV continues to evolve. Samsung’s Software Development Kit (SDK) for Samsung Smart TV uses a single SDK for apps across HDTVs, Blu-ray players and Blu-ray Home Theater systems, so that developers need only write applications once. By eliminating the barriers to development and enabling more versatile monetization for developers, Samsung has successfully built a robust and intuitive smart TV application developer ecosystem.

New features for the 2012 SDK includes enhanced support for “converged” or multi-screen apps. The new apps framework will be based on Javascript so more developers are able to create such converged apps for the TV environment. The SDK will also offer an improved Open Convergence Interface that supports the use of HID devices like USB mice, keyboards and game controllers in the apps, as well as industry-standard adaptive streaming that enables live and on-demand viewing of content in completed apps. Developers will also be able to incorporate in-app upgrades and ads to improve the user experience, as well as write basic functions that leverage Samsung Smart Interaction™ for gesture control and voice recognition.

The Samsung developer community continues to grow and currently has more than 2,000 active members. For more information on the developer community, please visit .
