While it could be a hardware defect leading to the problem, there’s also a chance that your phone’s software is malfunctioning. If it’s the former, you’ll have to pay a visit to the service center. If it’s the latter though, here are some ways to fix the volume up and down buttons not working on your Android device.

1. Remove a Case if You’re Using One

Oftentimes, the buttons on your phone may not work properly if you’re using a thick or rugged case. This may lead you to believe that the volume buttons are not working on your phone.

The simplest way to address this issue is to remove the case you’re using and then try using the volume buttons. If it works fine, it’s time to get a new case for your phone.

2. Clean the Volume Rockers

If the case isn’t causing a problem, it could be some dust or debris accumulated in and around the volume rockers on your device. Take off any case you’re using and clean the volume buttons using a soft microfiber cloth.

My phone thinks the down volume button is pressed

I own a xiaomi red mi note 8.

I was listening to music normal and it started lowering the volume by itself. I tried to get the volume higher a few times (pressing the up volume button or using the screen) but it kept going all the way down.

So i turned it off and cleaned it a little bit just in case something was bothering the button from the outside, or if the system was stuck. Then when I opened it and it still thought that the down button was pressed so it sent me to fast boot. Somehow I managed to boot it properly and now it seems to be okay, but i think it will happen again.

Is it a hardware or a software error? if there’s nothing I can do about it I might need to buy a new one.

Yeah, that worked for me too. Even my phone entered fast boot mode multiple times and the volume went all the way down to zero on its own.

I thought it was a software bug and soon had made my mind to install custom rom or so. Hitting the button (gently) literally solved the problem! Thanks!

For people who has this issue and hitting table doesn't work, i found an app named 'buttons remapper & combinatin' by 'Irishin'. You should download it, then give permission and then click + button in app, choose the button with the problem for me it is 'volume +', choose 'do nothing' for the action and enable 'block system action'. From now on my volume up button is not sensing anything. For increasing volume , i will use volume down button to see the volume window on screen then will use touchscreen to turn the volume on.

I had the problem there i smacked the phone on my bed and i was hitting my phone without any reason then i found it was a software problem. After knowing it i started searching for a genuine solution but i didn’t find any but after a lot of reaserch i just solved my problem by reboot.

I got a xiaomi redmi note 8. And today I experienced the same thing and it started when I was playing league of legends: wild rift and it becomes a hindrance in my game as it blocks the buttons I use to play the game. If you want a visualization; the volume always appear in the screen, every second so it doesn't go away. I tried restarting the device but the options to "airplane mode";"silent mode";"restart";"shutdown" don't appear. So, I long press and the device shuts down. Then when I try to open it go to Fast Boot. I tried doing what Mustafa said and in addition tried to clean the earphone slot with cotton buds with 99% alcohol. After that my phone goes back to normal. (I already have pried open the back of my device to try to fix the buttons itself but don't know how to get into the buttons itself.) Hope this helps the others before they pry open their device.

iPhone Volume Buttons Not Working? Try These 7 Fixes

Here are all the steps you need to take if your iPhone volume buttons aren't working.

A broken volume button is often unexpected and can be annoying to deal with. After all, we don't realize how much we use it until it no longer works. Not being able to turn your volume down when an annoying video plays or your song is too loud can also be embarrassing.

If your iPhone buttons aren't working properly, you should fix them as soon as possible. Luckily, there are plenty of solutions, and you can do many of them yourself.

1. Make Sure Your iPhone's Volume Buttons Are Enabled

Some might not be aware of this, but there is a setting that turns your iPhone's volume buttons on and off. This setting is already enabled by default on all devices, but it's possible someone can turn it off without realizing it.

To check this, head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and toggle on Change with Buttons . If this isn't enabled, this could be why your volume buttons aren't working. If it's already enabled, proceed to the next fix.

2. Remove Your iPhone From Its Case

iPhones are expensive, so it's likely that most of you use a case to protect them. In some instances, your case can interfere with your volume buttons. This is especially true with cases that have layers or have built-in screen protectors.

Simply remove your iPhone case and give your volume buttons another try. If they work now, you'll need to get a new case. After all, you probably want to keep your iPhone protected.

It's also possible that prolonged use of a case can cause your volume buttons to get dirty. If that's the case, proceed to the next step.

3. Clean Your iPhone's Volume Buttons Using Alcohol

We use our phones so much that dirt and grime can sometimes get under the buttons, especially when not using a case. So, press down on your buttons a few times to check if your buttons are stuck. You might need to clean them if they're stuck or don't seem to click down.

To clean your volume buttons, take a cotton swab and dip it in isopropyl alcohol. The best option for cleaning electronics is 99 percent isopropyl alcohol, as it dries quickly and doesn't contain much water. It also removes dirt and grime by breaking up oils.

Use the cotton swab to clean around your volume button the best you can. If you can push down on the buttons, doing so might help you clean it better. There's no need to overdo it with the alcohol, as it doesn't take much to work.

After cleaning, wait a few minutes for the alcohol to dry. If your volume buttons are working now, great! If they are only working a bit better, that's a sign that they are still dirty, and you should keep cleaning them. It's worth cleaning your entire iPhone if it's dirty .

4. Reset or Restore Your iPhone

Sometimes, firmware updates can change how the buttons on our phones work. This is especially true for older iPhone models. If you recently updated your iPhone and the volume buttons stopped working, try restarting your iPhone by turning it off and on again.

If that doesn't help, you might need to reset your device. This means backing up your iPhone and erasing all the content settings. A full reset might also work if your volume button stops working after an app download or a jailbreak attempt.
